Wasabi Peas

I've recently become addicted to wasabi peas. Seriously addicted, as in I ate a whole 5 oz container today. I'm a little ashamed, but they're so good!

Has anyone else tried wasabi peas? I've found that people usually love them or hate them, as their taste- admittedly- is kind of strange. Are you a (wasabi peas) lover or hater?

They're addictive!

I worked with a woman who thought they were a variety of peas. She didn't realize that wasabi was a seasoning.

anything wasabi!!!! I also love these little rice crackers I get at the asian market here, they are wasabi flavored and wrapped in nori, kinda strange but soooooo good! I can eat a pkg of the peas in 2 days. I'm also kinda in love with the blue diamond wasabi almonds, although its better and cheaper to make them myself.

love the wasabi peas! and i can totally eat an entire container in one sitting...

I hate wasabi, therefore I hate wasabi peas. :P

I have never really been fond of the peas, even without wasabi, since I was a little kid. We had them around the house for guests. The peas don't really taste that great, they're salty, and worst of all -- the intense gas pains that follow. I think it's the gas pains that really turned me away from them initially.

The ironic thing is that I frequently get A LOT of wasabi snacks (all sorts of nuts to vegetables like the peas) as gifts from family in Japan and Hawaii, as well as from coworkers. My co-workers love them and probably think I like them since I bring them to work to share all the time...

I sooo adore them! so addictive!! :) Great for cleaning out sinuses when stuffed up. :

I used to hate wasabi peas, but now I love them... even though I still don't really like actual wasabi.

They're awesome! I also like to crush them and use them as a breading on chicken and fish. Tasty!

love wasabi peas! love fresh wasabi & pickled ginger on shrimp. found wasabi cashews @ dollar tree last year they were imported from Vietnam. sent them to my niece in Mo. now she's hooked. they're great.

I use the extra strong ones as a "diet aid" - when I feel snacky I eat a few and they are so strong that they cut out ant further need for snacking!

I love wasabi peas! My mom doesn't like wasabi, so she'd buy the non-wasabi peas. And then she'd send them to me in a care package! And then when I whined about it, she was like... ohhhh... but I don't liiiike wasabi.
Hah! Crazy asian mommies....

Mt local southwestern restaurant does a wasabi pea-crusted mahi mahi.
Here's a funny wasabi story:
My mother-in-law took a two-week tour of Japan, but she doesn't know anything about food. So, when she came back, I took her out for sushi. I figured she'd be an "expert" after her trip.
She was eating the food, then abruptly picked up the whole clump of "green stuff" from her plate and ate it in one bite. Wha?!
I was shocked, and watched her face for a reaction. She tried to act like nothing was wrong, but her eyes started to bulge, her face turned red, and her head looked like it was going to explode. She managed to recover, but didn't say anything...

I heart wasabi peas, but I haven't had any for about a yearm gotta pick some up soon. I used crushed peas and some prepared horseradish and a crust for salmon...soo gooood.

Wasabi and I don't get along. For heat I defer to hot chilesauce.

welcome to indifferent. they are ok, but i never buy them.

I like wasabi peas ok, but "kaki no tane" is waaay more addicting to me.
The combination of a bit spicy (red chili, not wasabi) rice crackers and salted peanuts is just dangerous. omg.
I found a post on Justhungry about it.

Trader Joe's has a trail type mix with the wasabi peas, it is yummylicious.

@hmw0029: I looove kakidane! The spicier the better! It's still one of my favorite snacks since I was a little kid. I used to take them on flights as snacks because it tasted good and was noisy. It's amazing how crunchy those tiny little things are.

Because of the cost difference between getting them in Cleveland to getting them in Hawaii, we always mail home 5 pounds worth, packed so they won't get crushed. :)

When I am sent kakidane with peanuts (the exact ones Maki writes about), I usually leave the peanuts behind, as I love kakidane alone. My husband gets a bit annoyed finding the little packets opened with only peanuts stuffed back in the bag.

One of my coworker's officemates complained of the smell when I got my coworker hooked on the plain kakidane. He hated the smell of soy sauce.

Sorry for the thread hijack~

I am a lover. I could go through the big bags from Trader Joes in a matter of days. Never used as a protein coating before but that sounds really good.

I love wasabi peas! I also love the tempura wasabi nori chips that Trader Joe's sells. Mmmm, delicious.

I can't buy them because when I do, I eat them in one sitting. Agreed that they are really good and so addictive.

Wasabi peas are good; wasabi cashews are AMAZING. Trader Joe's had an amazing version for a while and discontinued them, so you couldn't get them in the states (Dollar Tree has wasabi-coated ones but not the right rice-flour-shell version) but now you can buy them from Amazon... but only in a pack of six 15-oz jars.

Sorry to babble but I LOVE them. Crispy rice flour coating + hot wasabi powder + creamy fatty cashew... too perfect.
