@nyceater, do you want vegetarian and non-dairy, or either or?

my stand-bys are stuffed mushrooms and bruschetta - i cut up tomatoes, add fresh herbs, and either oil and balsamic vinaigrette or pesto, and mozzarella, (but you could leave out the mozz) and then top toast with it. olive tapenade on toast is good too, or caponata. i also like to put out different nuts (some spicy, some sweet) and olives for snacks.

frittata could be cut up and made into an appetizer, and then people can just eat it with their hands.

or you can go for an asian theme - spring rolls, green papaya salad, dumplings (steamed or fried), etc.

I'm trying to find non-dairy, and preferably vegetarian (sorry I didn't make this clearer). Bruschetta is a good idea. Stuffed mushrooms usually have cheese in them, don't they? I like the tepanade idea, I completely forgot about that! Do you have a go-to recipe?

This is for the 4th of july, so I don't think a frittata would be good, since it will be sitting outside.

Thanks!

are eggs ok? if you slowly saute a bunch of chopped mushrooms with garlic, shallots, thyme, salt, pepper and some sherry in good olive oil until they're almost black, cool, and mix them with minced hard boiled eggs, it makes a really good paté to spread on crackers. if you don't want to use eggs, you could leave them out or substitute ground almonds or chopped walnuts. or even potatoes.

how about some puff pastry cut into strips and brushed w/ butter or olive oil and sprinkled w/ some herbs or spices.

Racking my brain, here's what I've come up with:

Spring rolls or rice wraps - you can fill them with just about anything - my favorite Thai place around here does rice noodles, carrots, shrimp (can be replaced with tofu or left out) and mint

Flatbreads - there are some ideas on this thread

Also, bean salads, marinated veggies, baba ghanoush... hope this helps!

Tamales. Okay, it's my answer for half of everything, but I love tamales. You can make them with no lard, so you're set on the vegetarian side, and the fillings are endless. You can make them spicy with a salsa-like filling, or savory with mushrooms or squash, or even sweet.

Veg salad without mayo, served in scooped-out small veggies.

I would do something with pesto! I like the flatbread idea too, cut into strips and dipped in some nice oil would be great.

how about baba ganoush? or tapenade (olive spread)? or roasted tomato/pepper spread?

Phyllo triangles, filled with either sautéed onions, finely chopped mushrooms, and fresh thyme (or other herbs), or with spinach/other greens & garlic & cumin.

What's the rest of the meal going to be?

I really love to take extra firm tofu and cut it into chunks and marinate it in what ever marinade you like (I had it in teriyaki) along with the tofu they had chopped up semi hot red pappers, and whole garlic cloves. I tried the garlic thinking oh oh everyone is going to stay away from me, but the garlic was sweet and firm to the bite, I don't know what they did to get them so sweet yet as firm as a raw clove. I loved it. We speared them with plastic picks and either ate them like that, or put it on a Ak'mok crackers oh yum yum yum yum. Another one that is a hit is grilled artichoke hearts with a parsley/olive oil dipping sauce, excellento.
