Two vegans taking on NYC July 4rth ...

A friend and I are going to NYC July 1rst-5th (I'm strict veg, she's vegan). We've already decided we're doing Red Bamboo and those two vegan ice cream places. Possibly Teany? And dim sum (any recs?)?

So what places do we absolutely have to visit? I am hoping to see some sites as well as eat, so I don't want to waste a meal. :-)

Hey Karyn!

Vegetarian House in Chinatown does great vegetarian dim sum, as does Buddha Bodai. Look up both on Menupages for locations/menus.

I'm not a fan of vegan desserts but there's one place that makes great ones: Kyotofu - lots of soy based desserts that are absolutely wonderful. Not everything is vegan though (some things are made with eggs) so just make sure your friend orders the right ones.

There's a great new Asian/eclectic vegan place in Cobble Hill (Brooklyn) called Wild Ginger. I haven't been myself but I've heard it's great. Cobble Hill is an awesome neighborhood (I've lived here for many years) and it's near Dumbo and the Brooklyn Bridge so you could get some sights out of your trip out here in addition to good food.

There are a number of South Indian vegetarian restaurants on Lexington Ave b/w 25th and 28th Streets - my family's favorite is Pongal. Not everything is vegan (beware ghee!) but the dosas without the fillings are, and they are what you should be ordering there, anyway.

Sripraphai is hands down the best Thai restaurant in NYC and they are conscientious about keeping things on their vegetarian menu that way - no fish sauce, etc. It's in Woodside, Queens, a quick ride on the 7 train from Grand Central.

OK I have to go to work now, but if you want any other recs feel free to send me an email!

one of my favorite restaurants is lan cafe on 6th st. it's vietnamese and 100 percent vegetarian. the food is just wonderful -- don't miss the green papaya salad -- and super cheap.

there's also the old vegan standby, angelica kitchen, on 12th street.

I did a few posts of vegetarian places when I visited NYC the last few times...
Eating Veggie in NYC
Viva Pizza
Curly's Vegetarian Lunch
Zen Palate
Zen Burger
I have never tried, but I've wanted to visit Blossom, Gobo and Candle 79...

Hope these help.

I heartily recommend Angelika Kitchen. Reliably vegan and tasty. Definitely try their walnut lentil pate. You also can get take-out from their window one door east.

Hope you have a great time!

Candle Cafe, Quantum Leap (Thompson St. location), Kate's Joint. None of these are the Per Se of veg dining, but if you're looking for satisying, cheapish food, these are great spots.

Seconded on Angelica - it's a classic, and excellent. I'd skip Wild Ginger - boring pan-Asian with super-sweet sauces (I had high hopes for it, sad). Gobo is ok, but either Blossom or Candle 79 would be great for a slightly fancier dinner out during your trip. Curly's is ok, but Quantum Leap (around the corner) is better. And seconded the reco for Vegetarian Dim Sum House - definitely don't miss it!! I'd also recommend getting some Ethiopian food (Ghenet out in Park Slope is the best, but Meskerem in the village is also great), and a trip to Babycakes for treats is probably inevitable. Also if you happen to be in the Bedford Ave. area, Penny Licks has vegan ice cream and the Endless Summer taco truck does seitan tacos & burritos (just get them to skip the dairy). There are tons of options - you'll have a great time!!

asked this a while back in the talk section.
got some good responses.
have a good time:

Two places on the Upper East that you will enjoy and are related: Candle Cafe on 3rd between 74th and 75th and Candle 79 on 79th & Lex. Candle Cafe is a little more relaxed and Candle 79 is a bit fancier. I recently had some vegan gnocchi at 79 and it was so unbelievably good. These two spots are easy to get to and in close proximity to a lot of the museums, fyi

i'm not positive about their vegan choices but tiny's sandwich shop on the lower east side makes amazing vegetarian versions of most of the sandwiches on their menu.

Blossom is great. Taste the "cheese cake;" you'd never beleive it's non-dairy.

lol savecara. The Per Se of vegan/vegetarian is... Per Se! I would also definitely recommend "veggie dim-sum" on Pell St. off of Mott in Manhattan's Chinatown.

FYI Teany just had a fire and is temporarily closed.

also , I would recommend Dirt Candy on 9th between 1st and A. Its vegetarian but accomodates vegans.

Oh Curly's is amazing. If you're in luck, they'll have the vegan Oreo cake, which is out of this world.

Not sure about vegan selections, but Red Hot in Park Slope has great veggie Chinese food. Their Orange Tofu (I think they call it Bean Curd Orange Flavor) is a dish my husband and I dream about and have never come close to finding elsewhere.

I just wanted to point out that one need not eat at a strictly vegetarian or vegan restaurant to eat good food that fits into such a diet. I for one get very annoyed when I ask for recs (I'm a life-long vegetarian) and people only recommend vegetarian places. At least these days there are great, non "health food" places, but, still, it's not the ONLY place a vegetarian can eat. For example, Scott Conant's spaghetti with tomato and basil at Scarpetta is to die for, and, if you ask them to not use any cheese (it's added at the end), you have an amazing vegan entree. I would MUCH rather eat that than something at Gobo or Candle Cafe.

A few comments -

- Angelica Kitchen is uggggh... it's precisely what people think of when they think of a stereotypical "hippie" vegetarian meal - seaweed, grains, raw things, no flavor, etc - ... I really don't know why people eat there.
- Zen Palate is where people ate 15 years ago when there were no other vegetarian restaurants and when other restaurants rarely, if ever, had vegetarian options (it's where I ate all the time in high school). It is not very good nor is it cheap. It's like eating at Applebee's in NYC. Why would you do that?!
- Dirt Candy says that they can accommodate vegans but I don't buy it - everything there is doused in either butter, cheese, or cream. That being said, oh my, their food is delicious.

Sorry for the rant but as you can tell I have strong feelings on vegetarianism, especially in NYC, where it is SO easy to go meatless!

Thanks for the suggestions! We think we might do Candle Cafe, and were totally doing Vegetarian Dim Sum. As much as we like Ethiopian, we both live in DC Metro, so we're used to it. I do love ethnic food options, though.

Is it sad that we've both thought about what we want to eat, but very little about what we're actually doing? :-)

Eh, figuring out what to do in NY will come to you! I've lived here for a better portion of my life and I still find stuff to do just walking around aimlessly. :)

If you find yourself in Brooklyn, I recommend The V-Spot - 100% vegan and a great menu selection!
