i walk by the upper west side location a couple of days a week in the late morning between 11 and 12} and there is never a line.

yea weekdays early afternoon (even like around two or three) you're usually fine, though as weather gets nice in the summer it may pick up.

yep - i think overall the UWS location is not as busy as the madison park one - probably weekdays are best in any event...

We went a few weeks ago. The line was long, but it moved quickly. We had our food in less than 10 minutes and were able to get a seat in the basement.

shake shack's website has a webcam that has streaming video of the line - so if you're in the mood to go there you can check out how busy it is first

I was pretty nervous to go to SS UWS because i'd heard of the scary lines, but i've been there three times and actually never had to wait very long at all.
as cybercita says, around 12 there's not really a line in my experience - the only time i've walked by and seen a ridiculous line is, oddly enough, at around 5. but the good thing is, you'll need a good five minutes to choose from the menu items - so a little line isn't really all that bad!! :)
