Suggestions for Eating out in New Orleans?

I am headed to New Orleans for a long weekend- any suggestions for 'can't miss' restaurants? I only have 3.5 days and want to make the most of each and every meal!!

We were there last weekend and visited The Gumbo Shop, K-Paul's, and Emeril's Delmonico as well as Marigny Brasserie for mid afternoon drinks. It is really hard to have a bad meal anywhere. Stella! is a foody dream even if really pricy and hard to get reservations to. NOLA, Emeril's downtown restaurant is amazing. The Bon Ton for shrimp remoulade for lunch, but only open Mon-Fri. is a very old and revered restaurant. And of course, if you still have money and room, Commander's Palace for Sunday Brunch.

if you like good food, there is not a better restaurant city in this country. go to nomenu.com, it's by a local restaurant critic tom fitzmorris and from what i'm told this is the only city with a call in radio show that's on 3 hours, 6 days a week and you can listen to the show online 4-7 pm weekdays and noon till 3 on saturdays. we have so many great restaurants i don't know where to start, call tom and tell him what your looking for and i promise he will send you to the right place. most tourists go to the french quarter, stay on the main streets and don't wander off into the unlit side streets.

It's really hard to have a Bad meal in NOLA - my personal favorite there is Mr. B's - top-notch service, great food and always a great crowd. I've been to Commander's Palace, and it was excellent, but a bit past its prime (no offense - it is a local institution).

On the extremely casual end of the scale, there's a great little bodega/deli/local voting location about 1-2 blocks up from the 'big balls' sculpture at the convention center - not sure if it's still there, but they made the best dressed po boys that I've ever had. There's a little patio in the back.

I haven't visited The Bid Easy since the great culinary diaspora, but you are not being misled as far as I know. Pick out at restaurant at random. They'll have good eats.

Although I have no plans to get down there any time soon, this place is calling me. Two words: DUCK PASTRAMI.

sorry, meant to say that the radio show is only about food.

i also dream of Cochon, and fully intend on making it a stop on my next trip.
i'm also quite fond of Mother's.

I've lived in NOLA for six years now and have to say, first and foremost,
THANK YOU for coming to visit our wonderful city!

If I had to pick a couple of my favorite restaurants to suggest, I'd go with Brigtsen's, K-Paul's (they also do lunch now Thurs–Sun, I believe), Cochon, Bacco, Crabby Jack's, Il Posto, Drago's, Domilise's, Baru, Coop's, Mr. B's, the Marigny Brasserie, and perhaps Boucherie or Jacques-Imo's if you're in for a little bit of a ride. I'll second Le Bon Ton—very classic, unassuming New Orleans. Their bread pudding recipe is in the original Silver Palate cookbook. I've never been to August, but would like to go. I've also had good food at Bayona, though I went with my bf in college and we had terrible service, with dinner lasting 3+ hours as parties came and went around us.

Places to avoid: Mother's is highly overrated, and you'd have to be insane to stand outside in long lines with temps currently in the 90s, plus high humidity and ZERO wind. Upperline, in my experience, is just okay, as are Dick & Jenny's and Clancy's, though these places tend to get high marks from visitors. Trust me—you can do better. Also, avoid the Praline Connection in both the Marigny and the airport.

I'll also give a thumbs up to Tom Fitzmorris (my friends and I refer to him simply as Tom at this point, haha) as the authority on New Orleans restaurants. He's been dining in and around New Orleans his entire life and is dedicated to the pursuit of deliciousness. I trust his taste and opinions, as well as his recipes. I'm pretty sure The Food Show is now on 1350 AM... it's changed a couple times in the past couple years. Check out nomenu.com or sign up for his e-mail newsletter. Good stuff.

I know I've taken many dates to Drago's in fat city and it's always been a hit. I'm also recommend the Flaming Torch and even Chop's Bistro (beginning of Vet's. Trust Me) There will be an article up soon with the ability for people to post where they've eaten recently when on a date at www.NolaDate.com if you want to check it out and comment on your recent dining in and around New Orleans.

Went to cochon in April - had an excellent meal and not too expensive. 2 specialty drinks (mine had tarragon, grapefruit and vodka - so good), 1 beer, boudin balls and fried alligator apps, oyster blt, side of green tomato crawfish casserole, corncake pineapple upside down cake. Split between my sister and I we were stuffed and came in under $100. The casserole was incredibly rich and so good - now i will have visions of the cripsy creamy cheesy top all day....

I would second (in a big way) the Cochon recommendation. Ate there recently and had a to-die-for meal. They have oven roasted oysters that are incredible and the entrees were just amazing. Great cocktails as well.

Cafe Du Monde for bengines (sp) and chickory (sp) coffee. I was only there once but that was a real treat.
