Plane Snacks

Hi Everyone,
We are traveling with our kids on a 3 hour flight in the morning (ages 3,5 7). Just wondering if anyone has any ideas on some snack for the plane? Thanks for the suggestions!

have they flown before? i was surprised when mine (6 and 4) took their first flights 6 months ago. they were so jazzed about looking out the window and stuff that they didn't eat any of the snacks that i packed for them!

BUT, better to pack and not need than to not pack and have three kids freaking out on a plane, right? that said, i packed little snack sized baggies of pretzels and goldfish, cereal bars, little bottles of water, and a handful of hershey's kisses. i felt it was more important to indulge a little (i.e. bribe them) than to be hyper about nutrition...

kristygarr's suggestions are great.

I would add nuts, crackers, small apples, oranges or orange slices and grapes. You can purchase single serving peanut butter in cups for spreading or dipping. They cost more but are very convenient for pland trips. Yogurt cups, small cubes of cheese or string cheese and juice boxes are good too. Tuck them in your carry-on with a little insulated ice pack to keep them cool.

Check the TSA security website to verify what you can bring on board.

My 2 year old was ok in the beginning of the flight...but then it went downhill after that. I was extremely stressed by the time I disembarked.

Pack snacks that are juicy.. like grapes, maybe some watermelon chunks, which will satisfy both snacking and thirst, since there are so many restrictions on what you can and can't bring on board.

Keep in mind the security restrictions about bringing liquids/gels on planes. Check out what's permissible with the carrier beforehand

Though you might not be able to bring a cupcake with a lot of gooey frosting, a plain cupcake might be OK. And I highly recommend Cup-A-Cake carriers (I have no affiliation with the company) if you'd like to bring treats that aren't pre-packaged:

Things not to bring:
Allergens: nuts, eggs, shellfish
Stuff that goes bad easily: sushi, eggs (again)
smelly stuff: fish, eggs (Seriously, don't bring em)

i agree with @moeats - you can't bring liquids through security (you can bring them on board if you buy them in the gift shops that are inside the airport), so fresh, juicy fruits are a good idea (just pack in sturdy container so they don't get squishy). i also like to bring trail mix and granola bars, they are easy to eat and won't bother anyone sitting around me.

One thing my Mom used to do when I was traveling with my sisters as a kid was to have us each pick out a snack (or a few - we were flying 13+ hrs) to take with us. It was something for each of us to look forward to and there was no "but I don't want that" to worry about. What about some dry cereals, yogurt covered raisins, carrot sticks, grapes (or other fruits), cheese cubes are great too. Don't forget to pack something chewy, though maybe not gum for the really young ones, in case their ears pop - we used to take starburst or similar candies with us for this - it was a lifesaver with my little sister.

Crackers, ricecakes and cheese, little sandwiches. I don't know if they allow peanuts or peanutbutter on planes anymore because of allergies?

dude, it's 3 hours. dont over do it. i prolly wouldnt even pack any food for a 3 hr flight. they'll live. if you must pack a couple apples or a few granola bars. dont pack food to keep them busy. books, games and paper and crayons should do that.

Pack snacks that they would NEVER be able to have at home...it's all about bribery people. 3 hours can seem like 3 days on a plane. We take empty water bottles through security and fill them once we pass through--water bottles that do NOT spill.
We also used to wrap little "toys" for them to play with on the plane.

My most desperate move was pre-chewing a Milky Way and dribbling it into a small toddler's mouth--I don't suggest it. The worst was when we had the 6 month old, 2 1/2 year old and 4 1/2 year old -plus we brought the dog.

Now they are big and we bring elaborate meals on the plane (people come check out what we are having). Ad the 4 1/2 year old is now 15 and flew by himself just this week-he didn't really bring any good snacks nor toys.

@gypsykid: three hours plus time to and from the airport could mean 5 hours. A selection of snacks is most certainly a necessity when traveling. Most behavioral problems stem from lack of appropriate foods, protein etc.

I've found that variety counts more than anything. Keep things in small portions - like a half handful of raisins rather than a ziploc baggie full - because boredom is your enemy on the plane.

Definitely some fresh fruit and yogurt. You would want to give your kids something healthy and refreshing on a long plane ride.

Cheerios(or some type of cereal that could be eaten dry), goldfish, gummi bears, carrots and celery sticks. A pack of baby wipes would be great to clean off sticky fingers and dirty faces. Maybe a some coloring books and crayons would be nice, too.

While keeping the kiddos happy is one goal, something else to consider is the fact that someone else will be sitting in those seats very shortly after. So try to keep in mind what the cleanup will be like. Cheerios can be swept up, but blobs of peanut butter or jelly on the headrest is going to be unpleasant for the next passenger.
