Interesting article. That is something I was wondering about from this side of the country. While I love high-end pizza, there is nothing like a classic NY slice.

I grew up in NJ and going out for a slice was so common. When I moved to Ohio I went to a local pizza place and asked for 2 slices and they looked at me like I was crazy. They had no idea why I would only want only 2 slices and not a whole pie.

Never have had classic NY pizza, but would like to just for the experience.
As close as I have come to getting to order just a 'slice' are the scary food court places in malls. Darn midwest.
Maybe the decline will gain more attention and some new places will open as the economy gets better.

I have fond memories as a young teen going with the mallrats on sat afternoon and getting a slice and a coke. We watched boys, boys watched us, then we went to Macy's and tried on hideous lip stick and cologne. Was good times.

having grown up in brooklyn in the 60's .... i am happy to say i experienced many kinds of "slices" ... there was a pizzeria on every other block. each one unique and delicious. the days before pre-fab sauce and cheese.
so i don't know what happened.... i think the ag-mafia took over ingredients and it somehow all tastes the same. maybe the ny slice as we know it today should reincarnate itself to resemble what it origionally was..... a pizza with an individual touch -- something someone from naples might actually enjoy upon visiting nyc.
so i think it's great that these upscale pizza places are opening up.... they should start offering pizza by the slice to the commom man, at a reasonable price -- just for old times sake.

I know I'm totally dating myself here, but I remember the Original Original Ray's. It was right by PS41 in the village and for a dollar I could get 2 slices and a soda (2 slices/30 each/ 25 soda). Every time my dad and I came to NY (a yearly, at least, event) I'd go there every single day for lunch.
While I may be looking back with rose-colored lenses, their pizza was much better then. They spun it. The quality of the cheese, the sauce, everything. The only place I've gone that even comes close is the hole in the wall on Amsterdam between 73rd and 74th street. Over the years, I've noticed a marked decline in the quality. I've lived in NYC for a really, really long time and Pizza was pretty much a weekly event for me until recently because it just stopped being so tasty.
I think that maybe part of the reason the classic NY pizza may be in decline is that it's not as good as it used to be. Yeah, there are exceptions, but one must travel to them, and the whole point of getting a slice is that you can walk a couple blocks, grab one and go. Pilgrimages to the Bronx or whatever, while nice, is the exception rather than the rule of how NYers want their slices.

There are still places to just get slices, even here in Texas. Unfortunaly, I remember getting a single slice for under $2.00, now you're lucky to get a slice for $3.00. Very informative article and it will be sad if that culture disappears from the New York scenery.
