Moving to Denton, TX, so what's good to eat?
So we're packing up and moving a half hour north to Denton TX. If anyone in the Serious Eats community lives in the area, we'd like to find a few good places to eat up there, any suggestions?

You are in for a treat. Denton is the home of the University of North Texas, so there will be plenty to choose from in this college town. Also, you are close to Dallas/Fort Worth, so really youre only limited by your stomach/imagination. Addison is a town north of Dallas, and it is supposed to have more restaurants per capita than any other US city. Enjoy!

I used to live in Denton, and my advice would be to head on over to Fry St., which is across the street from one side of the campus (at least it was when I was there - I think there have been some changes since then). There are some good, mom-and-pop places in that area, plus some good people watching and local flavor. (The dive bars in that area were wonderful places to experience local music.)
Also, on the "tree streets" - one-way streets that frame the town square - there are some really wonderful places to eat, as well. (Hickory, Oak, Locust, etc.) Sweetwater is a great place for burgers and typical bar food. Giuseppe's is on the North bound street, and is a good Italian place in a beautifully restored old home. There are also others in this area that my memory fails when it comes to their names!
Good luck, and have fun! It's a great place to live, even without traveling down I-35 to Dallas or Ft. Worth!

Thanks for the info. I live right around the corner from Addison right now, so kinda sad I won't be so close to all those good food places anymore. But the info on the Denton area is great!

I second the vote for Fry Street. Lots of good, cheap places with a good college town vibe.
In the town square, check out Beth Marie's for ice cream and Jupiter House for coffee. Just off the square is Hannah's (http://www.hannahsoffthesquare.com/), which is great for any meal, but I especially like their Sunday brunch. Also check out the Greenhouse (http://www.greenhouserestaurantdenton.com/).
Have fun in Denton! It's a quirky and fun city!

One word: Bari's. Actually, I hear it's called Fera's now, but it's my most favoritist Italian restaurant ever.

As an ex-pat New Yorker living in Dallas for a long time, I can tell you, depending on where you're originally from, you might find Denton a bit gastronomically challenged.
Although most restaurants are chain's, you should just follow the advice of posters here for info on "local" places.
I would also recommend visiting such sites as, www.chowhound.com (Texas) and, www.dallasfood.org for a more comprehensive view on Denton and the whole Dallas metroplex. Dallasfood.com has a really good section on Mexican food in Oak Cliff. Arguably, where you will find the most really good, authentic Mexican restaurants that represent most of the major Mexican food regions. Look For, "Mexican on Jefferson". Jefferson Avenue is the "main drag" in Oak Cliff containing the majority of the Mexican restaurants showcasing the foods of their various home regions. "Gringo's" are the minority on Jefferson Avenue. But, if you go, do try, "Gonzales Restaurant" and, "La Palapa Veracruzana". Bon appetite!
