Ice Cream and Pie pairings

Since the blueberry bounty has hit, I'm making a blueberry pie for the 4th. I also wanted to make some ice cream to go along with it and was trying to think of flavors other than vanilla. Any suggestions?

A little cinnamon would be nice. Not heavy-handed though. Or you could go with other fruits that pair well. Strawberry would be nice, and you'd be 2/3 of the way to red, white, and blue. Okay, the ice cream is pink, but still...and if you do a little whipped cream topping, you're there.

Banana? Pineapple? Raspberry?

Cheesecake-flavored?

Creme brulee (sp) ice cream and like dcurrie I would say raspberry.

But vanilla is sooo perfect. Other than that -- I think a grapefruit or blood orange sorbet or ice cream, lavender or peach ice cream. Ginger ice cream would be interesting.

I had coffee icecream with blueberry pie once, and I loved it.

I think something like ginger, cinnamon, brown sugar or a maple walnut would be nice. I wouldn't go with something too fruity - blueberry pie deserves something thick and creamy :)

Why not blueberry ice cream?

hmmm...buttermilk? creme fraiche? coconut? maple? almond? almond nougat? caramel? marshmallow? All ones I'd be happy to see on a plate. I agree with yummyinthecity, needs to be something creamy:)

My first thought was blueberry-vanilla ice cream!

Lemon ice cream might be unusual--but depending on the crust, I really like the maple flavor idea--kind of like pancakes!

sour cream ice cream. i think blueberries and sour cream go perfectly together. plus sour cream ice cream would have a great balance of sweet/tang.

Pomegranate-tangerine sorbet would be great with blueberry pie. This recipe from epicurious.com has had my family and friends raving. Another favorite is Pomegranate Gelato, also from epicurious.com.

Hate to be a stick in the mud, but I can only eat pie (any kind) with Vanilla, or French Vanilla, or Vanilla Bean - the vanilla just seems to enhance all of the pie flavours. It is like it is carved in stone for me. I guess I am boring. Here in my city, a small ice cream factory makes an Acadian Vanilla with a touch of added maple syrup - that is about as crazy as I can go!

I made a fair amount of creme fraiche ice cream last summer and it was amazing. Definitely delicious with the blueberries.

I think ginger would also be fantastic, with small chunks of candied ginger.

I also have a recipe for ice cream with candied lemon rind in it - that would probably pair really well, too.

You can't beat vanilla... but maybe a very light strawberry, or vanilla with strawberries (red, white, and blue!). Lemon and blueberry also go well together, although I am not crazy about citrus ice cream.

Wow, these are great ideas. I really like the sour cream/creme fraiche/buttermilk ideas. Coconut might be good, too. I know vanilla is a classic, but sometimes I like to change things up for no good reason. Thanks for all the great suggestions, I definitely have some options to thing about now.

lemon gelato or sorbet

I think a cardamon ice cream would be heaven with a blueberry pie.

Vanilla is the only ice cream flavor I put blueberries on.

if you need a recipe for sour cream ice cream, there was one in this month's gourmet. here's the url: http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Sour-Cream-Ice-Cream-354200

I love vanilla for this as it acts as a cream where you aren't overwhelmed and aren't searching for the flavors. I've tried subtle flavors like dulce de leche and ginger but you only really taste them on the first bite. If you are going for a red, white, and blue theme, i would go for a raspberry or strawberry swirl in vanilla instead of chunks of fruit.

sarar, thanks for the link. I actually ended up using an older Gourmet recipe for sour cream ice cream (Gourmet, Jan 1996) that had fewer ingredients. While vanilla and blueberries are a classic pairing, sour cream goes really well, too (think of how many recipes for sour cream blueberry coffee cake there are). Based on the custard I made last night I think it will be wonderful. It still has hints of vanilla but with the tang of sour cream so maybe it'll please the purists as well.

If normal vanilla is too boring, go vanilla bean. If you're really determined to stay away from vanilla altogether, go with a cake batter or something that tastes similar to ColdStone's sweet cream. I love cookie dough and cookies and cream as a la mode toppings, but those flavors are a little bolder and I might just be weird.

I would go with peach. They sell peach blueberry pies at the grocery store where I work, & people do buy them! Or the lemon suggested, but preferably not sorbet as all those ice crystals melting could quickly make the crust soggy. Needs something creamier, w/more fat molecules:)!
