How Do You Know Its Summer?

Hey guys!! so, what foods scream summer to you? that food that the moment you see it/taste it, you know its summer.

for me, its a few things.
fresh, hot, grilled corn on the cob, tons of butter and S&P
fresh tomato sandwiches
and something we call ratatouille spaghetti, which is cubed chicken, cooked with S&P, olive oil, onions oregano and summer squash, zucchini and tomatoes, mixed with spaghetti. delicious!

Growing up in southern Illinois, I would definitely agree with fresh corn on the cob. There's a little hut that sells it straight from the farm just a couple miles from my house. Oooh and anything charred, straight-off the grill -- hot dogs, veggies, burgers...mmmm.

Berries. Peaches. Watermelon. And I crave cold food which NEVER happens. I grill all year round so the BBQ doesn't have a particular appeal in the summer but it is enticing to be able to make dinner without heating up the house.

Really, really good cherry tomatoes. This one farm that comes to our famer's market doesn't have them yet, but last year I bought tons of them last year, mostly yellow and purple cherry tomatoes. They taste like candy.

Tomatoes. I can't wait to see them at the Farmer's Market.

Summer comes when I refuse to turn on the stove. Or anything I cook is immediately chilled.

Unless it's BLT time, and I'll sweat over a pan of bacon at 90° indoors.

The last of the good tomatoes are just about gone. We'll try to make a fall crop.

- definitely fresh tomatoes *drewl*
- fresh herbs on the balcony
- sudden cravings for ice cold beer
- bbq!!!!!

Grilled corn on the cob
Berries (blueberries and raspberries especially)
Peaches
Tomatoes
Watermelon
Popsicles made from berries, peaches, or watermelon

The smell of charcoal wafting through the air.

The taste of Bomb Pops

The sites, tastes, sounds and smells of my favorite farmers market buzzing like a busy bee hive.

Sweet succulent melons, with their juices running down my arms.

For me it's all about food smells: a neighbor's BBQ, a juicy tomoato sliced on the counter, the smell of fresh dirt at the farmer's market, or the sweet, warm smell of an ice cream shop as you walk in the door.

The good: Watermelon, homemade popcicles, and peaches

The bad: Not grilling as much outside. When you have to change clothes after grilling it's time to bring it indoors. Local farmers markets closing.

The ugly: Canned food in our pantry for any misguided hurricanes that may stray our way.

anything and everything from the garden.... huge salads, charcoal grilled meats .... fruit, fruit and more fruit.... lots of veggies....

cause it's so hot here in Columbia, S.C. that the trees are whistling for the dogs

there has to be either watermelon juice or butter from corn on the cob running down my arm before its officially summer...

the smell of freshly cut grass

the sounds of kids splashing in a pool

the taste of corn on the cob & watermelon

@realchiff: I'm totally with you on the cold food! (I am thin and freeze all the time; never want anything but warm/room temp food) And we grill no matter the season --we're in coastal Mississippi.

for me, though, mostly:
PEACHES. seriously, peaches are one of my favorite parts of summer. I almost flipped when I first discovered their appearance at the market several weeks back.
@ hungrychristel: all i want to drink is a crisp brew, too!

if it were summer year round, I would be one happy camper.

popsicles, tomatos and basil, watermelon, corn on the cob, peaches/nectarines and bing cherries -- those big dark ones that are so sweet and juicy and they stain your lips and tongue

Firing up thee ole barbie. Grilling everything you can think of and washing it down with ice cold beers. Berries, berries and more berries.

Anything grilled!

Also sweet corn, tomatoes, fresh berries galore, ICE CREAM!, lemonade, all that good stuff. I'm so giddy!

Chew on That

I smell the exhaust from my 75hp Merc as I'm on my way in quest of fresh fish.

Fresh tomatoes - that smell of a just-picked tomato is undeniable.
The piles and mounds of incredible varieties of vegetables at the Farmer's Market - SO many greens and onions and berries!
Stone fruits. Apricots and nectarines and plums oh my.
Fresh fish caught from the ocean - so fresh and briny!
Ceviche.
Salty Dogs.
Hamburgers on the grill with grilled onions. Big beefy slices of Maui onion slapped on the grill, mmmmm...
I love summer food!

My own fresh grown herbs, tomatoes, cucumbers and corn are my summer wonders. And then there's the wish and hope that the charcoal chimney wins out over lighter fluid with few of my neighbors. Shamefully, I've had my boys do the"ding dong ditch" with a gift bag of a charcoal chimney, charcoal, some fresh herbs and a bottle of good marinade and BBQ sauce. I'd say something face to face, except for the fact that we're about the only other people in the neighborhood who will speak to them. And it's not about lighter fluid. So be it. I just try.
