Food that Freaks Me Out!

I've heard the butter versus margarine debate a million times, and I'm not worried about margarine-I've heard from numerous MDs and biochemists that it's perfectly ok (Though do feel free to share your concerns. I'll listen)
But there are things that freak me out. Recently I heard about a brand of genetically modified Monsanto tomatoes that produce their own pesticide. As well, There've been too many horror stories about artificial sweeteners to make me feel at all comfortable.
So what freaks you out? What foods have you heard are dangerous, unhealthy, or downright evil?

51 Comments:

Some of the shit they put into meats and poultry. Saccharin and other artificial sweeteners I hear is crap and I will never use them, this girl only uses sugar. Butter is the only thing that I will use I don't really like the taste of oleo.

Water, fish fornicate in it.

head cheese. that ain't cheese, people!!

cheetos/cheesy poofs.freak.me.out. A potato chip is easy to understand: thinly slice potato+hot oil+salt/other seasoning=potato chip. Pretzel=dough+sprinkling of salt+heat. But WTF is a cheeto!?! They remind me way more of styrofoam than food.

Nabisco soft batch cookies (they have latex in them), Oreos, Fig Newtons, fish sticks, frozen pizza, frozen totinos, Hagen-Das ice cream, margarine, saccharin, ninety-percent of the sliced bread sold in stores, soda water, most boxed mixes, tilapia (double blech), pre-cut and frozen fries, tater-tots, canned hash, Vienna sausage, canned pork & beans, most canned soups, canned stock, spam and cheap cold cuts.

I stopped because the list was getting too long. I dislike this stuff mostly because it lacks flavor, has a bad flavor or is a complete waste of money. What freaks me out about is that people are stupid enough to buy it.

hahahaha these ones up here are good @meat guy @kristgarr

tomatoes that produce their own pesticide??? yep FREEEAKY!

I'm about where you are in phobias michichan:
- artificial sweeteners (of all kinds: sucralose, ace-k, aspartame, sugar alchohols, even stevia until i get results) @pjraz
- GMO mustations of all kinds (though we cannot avoid them most of the time)
- cold milk (tummy curdles)
- texture of liver (i cant get over it)
- softshell crabs (still cant get over it)

Lipton Sidekicks scare the shit out of me. Their smell makes me nauseous. Also, mock chicken meat loaf has to be the most offensive deli meat known to man.

Store bought meat before I switched to Whole Foods. Our local news did a story about how they would gas the meat to retain it's red color. They bought a package of ground meat and left it in the fridge for over a month and you couldn't even tell it was old because it as still red.

@ meat guy, people do to. double gross.

Alright... I haven't found much stuff about these mosanto tomatoes, but they HAVE been doing stuff like that for awhile with Bt crops.
Basically, the plants are genetically modified to produce the Bt toxin (which, by the way, has been used as a pesticide for many years) Bt is produced by natural bacteria found in the soil. The gene that produces the toxin is basically spliced into the crop genome.
There are many advantages and disadvantages to this practice. One of them is a superior fruit. Larger fruit, leaves that havent been riddled with holes and generally, tastier. This is because the plant does not have to use its energy for defense mechanisms against pests (growing new leaves, making thicker stems, tougher skins). The return from crops is greater, driving down production costs and consumer cost. The Bt toxin will only harm the insects that eat the plants, reducing the side effects of spraying pesticides.
There are advantages and disadvantages to every type of production schema. It's up to you to choose what you want to eat and buy.

To be honest, i think Bt crops are cool from a scientific viewpoint. In the sense that we can see human ingenuity. We are taking advantage of a bacteria already knows how to kill insects.
It may not be a perfect solution. And I understand why you might be freaked out by it. I'm trying to learn and understand so much more about these things before I can write it off entirely.

Pre-packaged cheese singles; Huitlacoche (moldy fungus-infected corn); Spam; Canned Chicken; Canned Shrimp; Fake-meat products (like fakon, "meat" crumbles, etc)...the list goes on.
Most of this stuff freaks me out b/c it's processed beyond belief. The Huitlacoche..I just want to know who the hell was hungry enough to eat THAT? haha

Cottage cheese. I can't get past the gross appearance...

Apple butter.
In college I stopped eating dinner with a suitemate because she would eat apple butter mixed with cottage cheese mixed together. She also put ketchup on everything (like dunked her wonder bread in it and everything).

Artificial sweeteners and artificial fats. If it was created in a lab, I don't want to eat it. If it was naturally created and then modified in a lab (like hydrogenated oils), I'll avoid eating it. If it's all natural but from a creepy plant, animal, yeast, or bacteria, it's not nearly as spooky.

Okra and other slimey foods. It's the texture.
Fake juice-type-fruit-flavored drinks. Too many words in the name. Then the back says "contains no juice."
Canned biscuits. Should food explode?
Any food made by a biochemist rather than a chef.

Any ingredient that doesn't occur in its form in nature, that is packaged to be sold as food. Especially any ingredient that makes you feel weird after, ie, MSG or aspartame.

Sugarfree candy. Some of you may know what I mean.

Kids foods that are neon colors.

Fast food.

Sunny Delight.

Canned/jarred gravy.

Those damn PBJ pockets. It's been bothering me for days.

Yeeeech.

Miracle Whip.

Any organ meats (tripe, sesos (brains), etc.). Shudder.

Spam.

Truthfully, I think some genetically modified food will be necessary as a way of guarding against world hunger and food shortages, to ensure better disease resistance and durability. It doesn't freak me out.

@Grumpy--I don't eat that stuff anymore, but I would be lying if I said Oreos 'freaked me out' @beth1--I love smacking those exploding cans, even though I don't eat biscuits from a can either.

However, the words : "anal seepage" on olestra-based products and the words "excessive consumption can cause a laxative effect" on sugar free candy do freak me out. Any products with words about a room in the house other than the kitchen are a no-no in my grocery cart.

I'm not easily scared by food, but a dessert made with fat free Cool Whip (served by my friend) freaked me out a bit. I ate it, though.

In defense of GMOs, I'd rather have my vegetable defend itself than spraying chemical pesticide or the "natural" insect-killing bacteria that is super closely related to Bacillus anthracis. Yep, the one that makes anthrax toxin, and the toxin proteins are not even encoded in its genomic DNA- it's on a mobile piece of DNA and Bacillus species are super competent (meaning they take up DNA from outside very easily). I think the B. thuringiensis powder is sold as an "organic" pesticide, ironically.

Miracle Whip freaks me out.

On the topic of GM foods, in theory I think they could be really great (i.e. provide more nutrients, disease resistance, etc). However in reality, the most common application of genetic engineering to foods is in Monsanto's "Round-ready" crops. Basically what they do is engineer the food to be resistant to pesticides so the farmer can blanket their entire farm with chemicals instead of just spraying the areas where there is a problem. Of course the same company (Monsanto) sells the Roundup-ready seeds and the pesticide sprays. Pretty much all the conventional corn, soybeans, and sugar beets in the US are grown this way. Sick.

Fish sauce. Put some fish in a barrel and let them rot until they dissolve into liquid. Yuck. Feel free to put it in my food, just make sure it's not a predominant taste and whatever you do, please DON'T tell me it's in there. I'd rather enjoy my meal in ignorance.

I also like yogurt and cheese, but I'd prefer not to think too much about it. "Hey guys, let's pull on this cow's nipples and drink what comes out! Oops, we waited too long and it got bacteria in it...oh well, let's eat it anyway!" Other animals that aren't humans eat other animals for food, and they eat other animals' eggs for food, but is there really anyone else besides us who eats another animal's milk, especially once it's gone bad?

Forgot -- also can't understand Jello molds made with fruit or other foods, or aspic. My in-laws make chicken aspic for major holidays, and, just ewwww. I can't even bring myself to taste it.

@gbania: haha jello 'salads' freak me outtttt! what the hell? its colored powder that turns into....plastic? and, uh..moves.

packaged cheese singles freak me out, too. not long ago i just tried to eat one on a sandwich-- i flipped a bit and threw it away. again, plastic.
canned tuna freaks me out. the smelllllll!

oh, brightly colored drink 'mixes'; i mean, i like a good amaretto sour-- not one lit by a blacklight.

ohh i know. that 'browning liquid' for roux cheaters. my stepdad, who died a few weeks ago, and I had many, many arguments about this. as coasties, to me its use in gumbo was wayyy unacceptable. ( i dont care if it's concentrated food color)

How about that crap they sell as "butter flavoured" microwave popcorn. I swear one of the Doctor's at work had that stink permeate into his office forever, (not to mention the little kitchenette) and after a couple of days, it just smelled like vomit. He continue to make it as a snack every day. I have been retired six and a half years and I can still smell it.

anything blue.

i kid you not, i have not eaten anything blue since like 7th grade. It all started with blue M&M's. The color just wireds me out for some reason

@grumpy - latex? REALLY?

you're lying.

....please tell me you're lying?

Unless you are talking Andrew Zimmern territory absolutely nothing freaks me out.

@hungrychristel,

I added on to the plant that makes the latex. The reason they were adding on to their plant? Nabisco. These kinds of plants are, well, difficult to work on as well. Explosions are a constant hazard. We also completely rebuilt the unit's sorting and packaging system. This was a major pain as that end of the unit had to be kept in sterile condition. The same company also makes the majority of latex used in blood bags and for other surgical devices.

Anyone else remember the green ketchup Heinz came out with a few years back? I just wouldn't put it in my mouth, it freaked me out too much. Hot Pockets kind of bother me too.

@bess--what is "meat glue"?
@anna--ever seen that Jim Gaffigan bit on Hot Pockets? Here's the link.

I am like @finsbigfan in that not much freaks me out. I grew up without a lot and my parents fried Spam and Vienna sausages with vinegar and onions were a treat. We couldn't wait until our friends parents would butcher the hogs so we could have fresh scrapple/maple syrup. Now mind you I would not eat this now since I know how bad all of this is for you, but then it was sustenance. A pile of tomatoes was fried tomato gravy and I can still hear the sizzle when my mom made the meal that I thought was heaven. Because of our poverty there was no money for canned soup or Fruit Loops. I never developed a taste for fast food and I will never like Wonder Bread.

When I married I had never had a filet mignon and thought it was a pot roast. Glad my MIL saved that meal. My husband balked when I bought parsnips home-his privileged life left him too well fed and with a dearth of food experiences. Persimmon pudding rules in the south! He never knew.

I think you are all on the right track regarding processed food, but I wonder if some of you might starve during a famine. I can't wait to find out what meat glue is @bess four. I am amazed at what I discover on this site!!

What freaks me out? The fact that since my kids are now in charge of their own lunches, they've gone from organic whole grain bread with no preservatives holding a beatifully homemade peanut butter and jelly sandwich to cheese fries! This freaks me out! I'm so sad.
P.S. Yes, we make our own peanut butter, have you seen the crap on a jif or skippy label? Leave it in your cabinet and in 20 years, it'll probably still be intact, no mold, no nothing. YUCK

Mayo.

So wrong on so many levels.

@bess--I checked around on meat glue. It appears to be the substance that binds a McNugget together. You have enlightened me to yet another of processed food's dark secrets.

Never walk off into a dark place without your lantern. You will almost certainly be attacked by a slavering meat grue.

Natto, balut, and maggot cheese.

Oh, and that obscene shaved ice dish with corn in it that has been featured here that so many people coo over.

Anything modified from its most traditional form freaks me out...spray cheese, Splenda, and powdered egg whites, for a start. I think the fact that people are getting more obese and getting cancer more and more should be a wake up call to America to go back to eating pure food. In my mother's generation (1940's and 50's) they ate three square meals a day and drank whole milk and nobody weighed 400 pounds. I think the difference is mostly in the quality of food.

@tiffanyh283 - Huitalacoche is UNBELIEVABLY delicious. True, I probably wouldn't have eaten it the first time had I known what it actually was (I was told in broken English that it's a mushroom) but now if I ever see it on a menu I'll order it.

I adore this thread. And I have a confession myself. I reviewed a kiwi scoop and citrus peeler kit for a site and to this day I can't imagine why users can't just use regular spoons and knives! Sheesh.

Chew on That

Not to stick up for Monsanto or anything but the purpose of Roundup resistant crops is to make them resistant to Roundup, which is an herbicide, not a pesticide. That way farmers can control weeds with roundup, which is probably less toxic than lots of other things they could use.

Fresh produce grown in Mexico skeeves me to no end. We lived on the Texas/Mexico border and I know what they did to the river. They water their crops with that water and sell them to US grocery distributors. E. coli anyone?

@RegrettableFoodie- whoops you are right, it is an herbicide. Still not a fan though. especially since it rips off struggling small farmers who now have to buy enough Roundup to spray their entire farm instead of doing spot applications where there is a weed problem.

Nothing naturally occurring freaks me out.

Processed foods like Cool Whip and Miracle Whip are freaky.

Why do all the freaky foods have "Whip" in them? (no puns here, folks), and why is Miracle Whip considered a Miracle? Is it a Miracle that it exists?

@Quasibonko:
I don't like corn on my shaved ice, but I do like mung beans.

lol
@fuuchan, it's a miracle people eat it!!!!

Lutefisk - dried white fish soaked in lye, then boiled. Served each Christmas by my Norwegian stepfamily. I just pass it on...

Food doesn't freak me out, its the people that eat the things that makes me want to go apeshit. I saw a product in a Kroger that was a self-stable bagged waffle that claimed it was ready because you don't add syrup. It looks like food, feels like food(kinda), maybe tastes like food, but don't forget that you can buy toilet cleaner, dog collars and tampons in a Supermarket--just being there doesn't make it food!

@FeedingFive - are you serious? I purchase mexican produce all the time...thats changed my mind. Thanks for the tip!
