Food Network, enough cakes already!!!
What in the world has happened to Food Network programming? Is someone new in charge? Who in the world wants to watch cakes night after night? And where have all the good shows gone? If they can show 7-year-old reruns of the bad ones they show now, why not show reruns of the good ones like the Fat Ladies, The Best Of, Food Finds, Mario (of course), and even Rachael Ray's Forty Dollars a Day is better than these new shows like the Neelys and the cake shows. I wish someone would come up with a good food show.

Nice rant. Pretty much the only shows I will not watch on Food Network are the cake shows. I couldn't care less about cakes, let alone reality show drama about cakes.
And referring to both Food Network and Travel Channel, I'm also getting tired and disgusted of watching fun-lovin' gluttons roam the country and eat piles of fat.
Lorenzo at 4:33PM on 06/15/09
I 100% agree. My fiance and I don't watch too much anymore, but it seems like all the challenge shows we ever catch are cake-based (so we change it), or it's Bobby Flay throwing down with a cake baker, or Ace of Cakes, or whatever. I don't do cakes, they bore me. And I sure as hell don't want to see Bobby Flay baking cakes, I wanna see him do his thing. So yeah. It totally bugs.
lo82070 at 4:34PM on 06/15/09
I'm with you foodie123f. Food Network seems to have spiraled into self-destruct mode. I don't mind shows about cakes, just so long as I can learn how to make good ones. They are running the "challenge" format into the ground. I also despise the wasted bandwidth that goes into Unwrapped and other such bilgewater. I'd rather have an hour long period of instruction on how to make something in my own kitchen than an hour of "Oh, look at my wonderful industrial engineering" which, is also an hour of "We make really good candy" or "We make really good cheeze crackers". What a load of stuff and nonsense. They may as well turn those time periods over to paid programming and be done with it.
Grumpy Old Man at 4:40PM on 06/15/09
Aaaamen. The cake shows are awful-- and there aren't even that many of them! They just keep re-playing, like, the same five. I'd rather watch Food Network Challenge: Food Styling (yes, that's real) everyday than watch another cake show!
lizaj at 4:43PM on 06/15/09
Please let me add my name to this list of malcontents. I HATE these reality, and challenge shows. They are just ridiculous, I would rather watch paint dry. Just get on with the education of cookery for f'akes.
bareneed at 4:47PM on 06/15/09
While I am in full grump mode, I have to ask. Why isn't this guy on Food Network? Could it be that he actually knows what the hell he's talking about?
Grumpy Old Man at 4:50PM on 06/15/09
Yup. Done with the cake shows. Unless one of those cakes has my name on it not interested.
finsbigfan at 4:51PM on 06/15/09
Dear Food Network,
I would like to volunteer to consult on your programming. Currently it sucks! I know I could do a better job....the puppies next door could do a better job.
Love,

Yeah I try not to put any of those shows on the food show listings. What do you feel about the shows on PBS and public television? Are there any good food (and drink) shows online? Also, a tangent of sorts, any good food and/or drink radio shows/podcasts?
Gordon Mark at 5:16PM on 06/15/09
The only people I know who really watch and enjoy the cake shows are people who don't cook!
ag3208 at 5:20PM on 06/15/09
Funny. I was going to post a topic with this exact title. ENOUGH GODDAM CAKES!!! Enough with the pastry challenges too, no one cares about making a seven foot tall ugly-as-shit sculpture out of solid sugar that is not intended to be eaten by anyone and only serves as an effigy to some pastry chef's penis. The Food Network Challenge shows are so low budget and poorly produced, if you are so intent on bombarding us with them, at least offer more variety. Bring back the "Stand and Stir" shows PLEASE.
simon at 5:43PM on 06/15/09
Um, okay, at the risk of sounding really bad right now, I love baking and decorating cakes. It's something that I do, and I also love watching those shows. And yes, I have been known to watch them over and over again. if nothing else, I learn to tricks, pick up tips and learn from other people's mistakes before I make them myself. Also, I relaly like Unwrapped, too. I love learning about the food industry - from how things are made to how they are marketed - and frankly, I wish that they would bring more episodes of Heavyweights and shows like that.
But, on the other hand, I would also like to see more of their better shows that aren't Guy Fieri or Bobby Flay. What happened to Sweet Dreams, with Gale Gand? or bring back Molto Mario - even those reruns are great!
Traveller at 5:44PM on 06/15/09
I like America's Test Kitchen and Lydia Bastianich's show on PBS.
Grumpy Old Man at 5:46PM on 06/15/09
@Gordon Mark, I love Splendid Table podcast!
hmw0029 at 5:52PM on 06/15/09
I know I am in the minority, but I love Ace of Cakes and the Challenges! I am not a great cook, but enjoy watching how creative other people can be. Ace is fun because of the quirky staff that reminds me of my kids and their friends. The Challenges because I could never do what they do in a million years.
I do wish there were more how-tos on the FN. I have eaten at the Neely's restaurant in Memphis and can get better bbq in Florida. I won't watch their show. I enjoy Rachel Ray because she teaches me things I don't know. I also like Guy's travelogue of interesting eatery's. I have eaten at several of them when traveling and he is usually right on the money.
flabookworm at 6:11PM on 06/15/09
I remember Julia Child's The French Chef. They don't make 'em like that anymore! That show Chopped - Blech. I like America's Test Kitchen and Cook's Country.
tapioca at 6:24PM on 06/15/09
I love the cakes, but most of those are repeats, which sucks.
jennywenny at 6:32PM on 06/15/09
I've just about given up FN with a very few exceptions, and to be honest I'm finding it inconvienent to even find out when those few are on. I'm tired of watching oversexed morons tell me to "rub my meat" of use more butter! Just show me a decent technique and let me worry about my sex life. I know we all enjoy some food porn now and then, but FN is taking things to pretty disgusting extremes.
huneybumper at 7:16PM on 06/15/09
I don't get the Food Network, only PBS, but few things make me giddier with joy than a Chris Kimball versus Julia or Bridget smackdown over a cake!
HeartofGlass at 7:19PM on 06/15/09
I grew up watching the cooking shows on PBS... There are very few shows left on Food Network that I feel are worth watching. I watch Emeril on the Green channel and I watched Spain-On The Road Again even though it was a complete waste of Bittman and Mario Batali.
I like Ace of Cakes, but those awful challenge shows are grating. I watched one last night where one cake looked like a mountain of barf with strawberries on top. The highlight was when the woman who made the cake set it on fire.
gingercookiewithlime at 7:23PM on 06/15/09
I love Ace of Cakes but enough with the "Characters out of World of Warcraft Challenge" shows. I love watching Duff's crew. It's about the closest thing to reality TV I watch (or freely admit, anyway).
therealchiffonade at 7:44PM on 06/15/09
I don't mind an occasional cake program, but Ace of Cakes, cake competitions, etc. Way too many way to many re-runs of them too.
How about a show that has canning and preserving?
Just no more cakes- please.
CJ McD at 7:56PM on 06/15/09
I am all burned out on Duff and friends. The cakes per se are overinflated in price and ego. OK OK you make cakes in shapes. Want a cookie?
I miss the old shows in foodtv with master bakers who did OMG real baking of cakes people want to make, desserts people can serve without a freaking camera crew.
JerzeeTomato at 8:55PM on 06/15/09
I thought I was in the minority on the 'I'm tired of cake reality shows'. It is a bit too much. Actually 95% of their programming is questionable. I agree with the original rant - bring back the 'oldies'. They were hilariously funny. Nothing beats the 2 Fat Ladies for a little bizarre humor. And it would be fun if they had a week of just the 'first shows' - I mean the first episodes they ever ran of Emeril, Bobby and Mario plus a few others who I've forgotten.
Ribster at 9:02PM on 06/15/09
So funny! Totally was just thinking that on Sunday - seems like every food network challenge is a cake one!!! I mean I love cakes, but watching so much cake and chocolate isn't that fun if you don't get to taste it :)
YummyInTheCity at 9:09PM on 06/15/09
I'm glad there is a two hour family guy block. I'm tired of all of the shows.
chardonnay at 9:25PM on 06/15/09
The cake shows and the "Build a Small City out of Sugar" challenges are a total turn off for me. I miss Molto Mario and am sad that the FN has dumbed down its programming to the point where any serious or interested cook (not chef) can't watch. However, I do find that I like the Neeley's. Not so much for their cooking but for the way they interact. They look like they really enjoy each other and what they are doing and that is nice to see. Could someone please show Rachel Ray and Sandra what's-her-name the door?
steveTV at 9:43PM on 06/15/09
I have watched FN less and less because of this too. I like cake but there are too many cake shows. It is either the cake shows or Iron Chef, every time i turn to the tv guide Iron Chef is on and i am a little sick of that too.
pjracz10 at 10:30PM on 06/15/09
Could someone give that Australian judge with the short hair/padded headband combo a make over? Seriously. Could What Not to Wear pick her up and tell her she looks just as bad as the cakes she so passionately disapproves of in the lamo disney cake challenges? That would be great. Thanks.
yayfood at 10:48PM on 06/15/09
I like Ace of Cakes, and I've watched a few cake shows, but I absolutely agree that way too many hours are devoted to them, and of course, it's not even the "food" aspect that is the focus: these are frosting sculptures, and I wouldn't doubt if most of them tasted blah. If it was a pastry competition, about the actual food and not merely the decoration, I'd be much more interested.
renzata at 11:30PM on 06/15/09
@yayfood -- She was the "guest client" for the cake challenge that was on the other day!
They're doing so many of these crap shows that they've run out of people to act as clients...
gingercookiewithlime at 11:32PM on 06/15/09
The day I saw Duff spreading frosting on a big block of styrofoam (and I am not using the word as a euphemism) was the last time I watched a FN cake show.
I also don't watch any show where the host throws food at the camera, sticks his/her face in the camera, is referred to as the "bad boy" of whatever, wastes food in an attempt to be funny or otherwise tries to be "gonzo".
arjava at 12:25AM on 06/16/09
Proud to say: Never watched more than 3 minutes of any of the cake shows.
I used to watch FN a lot, but seldom find anything worthwhile on there anymore. I do watch the Next FN "Star" just so I can rag on it and enjoy the laughs about it over at Food Network Humor. http://foodnetworkhumor.com/2009/06/next-food-network-star-episode-502-recap/
Remander at 12:37AM on 06/16/09
Personally, I hate what is happening to Food Network. It's like having something bad go wrong with my favorite pickup and not being able to do anything about it, or having the motor in my table saw burn up. They are fast becoming totally useless.
Grumpy Old Man at 12:47AM on 06/16/09
Food network stinks! BUT, they do own some good domain names!
but there is much better content here and on EatFish.com
seafoodman at 1:01AM on 06/16/09
If you're going to have a cake show, why not have it involve I dunno, something crazy like... cake? Does anyone else have a problem with this?! It really chaps my ass to see these people making cakes out of everything else but cake! If I had a cake that I paid hundreds or even thousands of dollars for and I cut into styrofoam or rice crispy treats covered in fondant... I'd be looking to kick someone in the...errr.... cake!
Pavlov at 5:54AM on 06/16/09
these things arent cake shows, they are rather like FN actually all surface flash and gaudy, but when you try to find the "cake of the matter" there is nothing there.
huneybumper at 8:22AM on 06/16/09
When I had cable, the only FN I watched was Good Eats, Everyday Italian, and Barefoot Contessa. I don't miss the network at all when, in fact, PBS and other public access channels have much better cooking shows where people actually, I don't know...cook food? I second Lydia and America's Test Kitchen.
savecara at 9:03AM on 06/16/09
I want to make cakes for a living and I'm still sick of all of these stupid competitions! FN has nothing educational anymore.
@ Traveller: good mention of Gale Gand. I wasn't the biggest fan of her personally but her show was just what is sorely missed on the current FN: a good show about pastry that's a mix of professional technique and home baking.
meem21 at 9:43AM on 06/16/09
Funny, I also thought this weekend that I was tired of cake challenges...I do like Bobby Flay's throwdowns (because he doesn't always win), and I like Iron Chef America as my "challenge" shows. As for those intrepid 'travellers", Anthony Bourdain is highly watchable on the Travel Channel. Don't really care for the Neely's, or Big Daddy...but Rachael, Paula and Ina can stay. I, too, miss Molto Mario...he cooked some great food!
kakin75 at 10:34AM on 06/16/09
i feel like everything's been said already-ha ha.
just about the only show i enjoy anymore is good eats. they could make it an all alton network & i'd be down with that. at least with him i always come away more enlightened.
the only competition show i really care for is iron chef (well, when it's a new one).
mostly i just dig the last ten minutes of it when they're judging, altho even their judges can get on my nerves sometimes--(jeffery steingarten, i'm talking to you!)
i grew up on pbs' saturday morning cooking shows. those were the days...yan can cook...jacques pepin...julia child...plus, pittsburgh (wqed) specifically has excellent local cooking programming...their program director, chris fennimore, hosts 'qed cooks' on saturdays, which features favorite recipes from viewers in the greater Pittsburgh area. plus, he started a program called 'steel city chefs' which highlights a local restaurant chef who shows how to make their best dish. rick sebak also does great documentaries (for example, 'a hot dog program', 'to market to market to buy a fat pig', 'sandwiches that you will like')
ah, wqed....fn could learn so much from you!
gastronomeg at 10:54AM on 06/16/09
Oh, I loathe FN now! I used to be practically addicted. Now it's just cleavage and too-bright teeth, stupid construction projects, and other nonsense. On the rare occasions that I give it another chance, I've watched Giada put vanilla bean into a cinnamon-sugar coating for fried pastries, such that they clumped up, rather than putting it into the batter where the flavor could permeate the treats. I've watched Alton nearly cut his fingers off using an electric knife improperly. And I've watched Emeril use the same beaters to beat cream and then egg whites, only to then wonder if the whites had gone bad under the hot lights instead of realizing that YOU CAN'T BEAT WHITES WITH FAT IN THEM!!! Also, the woman from Michigan who wins many of those stupid cake contests makes beautiful sculptures, but they have no flavor -- I can personally attest to that, since her shop is in my town. Incompetence is rewarded at FN these days.
yentamary at 12:56PM on 06/16/09
Alleluia. I'm glad it's not just this FAMILY who used to all be addicted to Emeril Live, Molto Mario, and Iron Chef. I was actully finding it very sad the other day that Gale Gand is no longer on. Personality aside, as has been stated, she was a good teacher, and it's a shame didi can't sit and be instructed by her in the kitchen. She gravittes toward Paula Deen's sweet treats. BUUUTTTER BUUUTTTER BUUUTTER! She's expensive to duplicate! Sorry, can't stand Rachel Ray on FN and can't stand her on ABC. Reminds me of that loud drunk at the bar when you're trying to have an intimate conversation with your mate. Sandra who? UGH! Food Detectives has to be the most idiotic show I've ever seen, wipeout anyone?
donnie at 6:58PM on 06/16/09
I agree, the cake and all the other challenge shows are stinkos.
dmcavanagh at 7:45PM on 06/16/09
There are also no good ethnic food shows, or even people of color on The Food Network. Now they have The Neelys as a token, but even then its like one giant stereotype of collard greens and bbq. I feel like I'm watching the same recipes as Paula Deen and Sandra whatshertablescapeface but omg with diversity!!
Bring on some Ming Tsai. I saw an old show of his the other day and he showed how to make freakin' Peking Duck at home.
inothernews at 2:03AM on 06/17/09
I like the cake shows, but I am a cake decorator. Some of them are stinkos though.
No to Giada's boobies, no to Bobby Flay's boobies (wear an undershirt for goodness sakes, he could cut glass with those things), no to Sandra & her OCD matching of the set to her (low cut) shirt... though she always makes cocktails & that amuses me.
On PBS I really love Check, Please! (Chicago), & America's Test Kitchen. I wish they still played Great Chefs, anyone remember that one? With the female voice over for when the chef left out a crucial step or didn't speak english... good times
