Father's Day BBQ: BYO Steak Bar

We're having 12-15 for Father's Day and in the interest of doing something different and relatively economical, I'm having a BYO Steak and Potato Bar. Everyone brings their own steak, we provide the grill, baked potatoes and gourmet toppings - plus a green salad and ice cream sundae bar for dessert.

For the steak toppings, I've got
caramelized onions
sherry-sauteed mushrooms
goat cheese
gorgonzola
herb butter
and truffle butter (if I can find some).

What else would you top a steak with?

My husband loves grilled Italian bread under his steak. He loves the contrast in textures and the way the bread soaks up the steak drippings. I just brush the sliced bread with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper and grill until golden. Sounds like a great day. Have fun!

You could make a maitre d' butter with fresh chopped herbs. Use 1/2 EVOO and 1/2 butter then add salt, pepper and any finely chopped herbs you like, I use several types.

Roasted red peppers

a soft bluecheese, hp sauce, a red-wine rosemary mushroom demi glaze, a caper mustard sauce.

love the idea.

peppercorn sauce! mmmm.. steak au poivre.

i just like salt and pepper, but let me compliment you on an awesome idea!

I'd add sauteed mushrooms and a white horseradish sauce.

OMG.. you guys are awesome. I thought this was going to be an easy party, but now I have to pick from all the amazing suggestions (and wipe the drool off my keyboard).

I am the most boring steak person on the planet -- filet, rare, no salt, or any other seasoning or sauce. Almost said no pepper, but I do love a bit of coarse ground pepper!

How about:
- bacon
- chipotle sauce
- chopped grilled peaches, mangoes, pineapple, or whatever other fruits
- some kind of balsamic base
- sliced, marinated shiitake cooked in a shoyu-based sauce (vegetable oil, sesame oil for flavor, vinegar, garlic, ginger, sriracha, sesame seeds, shoyu, brown sugar, corn/potato starch as a thickener)
- peanut sauce (ok, maybe that's a little too funky)
- artichokes, prepared however and with whatever you like, e.g., bernaise
- chopped chili peppers

What a great idea Bty. Chimichurri sauce. All sorts of sauces as a matter of fact, A-1, Heinz 57, even ketchup. Grilled veggie medley like red, yellow, green pepper with onions. Have fun. Let us know how it goes please.

Cherry peppers .

Little bit of salt with a touch of pepper and garlic. Cooked on the hottest propane or charcoal grill possible. Flavor of the meat should stand on it's own without a sauce. Maybe a little bit of melted dipping butter in a ramekin on the side.

The BYO steak party is a great idea. Never really though of it.

Heh. Actually, I am usually a plain-old steak (with salt & pepper) kinda gal, myself, but thought it would be fun to play with some gourmet toppings. Will let you all know how it goes.

A good steak cooked right needs to accompaniments.

That said, buy some A1 just in case someone brings a lousy cut and/or someone's steak gets overcooked.

Lump crab meat seems to go well over steak too. Especially when they're both covered in a mushroom sauce.

Was a great party.
Grumpy Old Man's White Horseradish Sauce was the favorite.
Everyone raved about it and since they all cooked their own steaks, no one complained about them being over or under done.
Note to self: Caramelizing 5 pounds of onions takes much longer than you think it will.
