I am a big fan of Carmine's. Great Italian food. Huge portions served family style.. don't go with a small party though.. seriously.

Esca (Seafood), Nizza (Italian), Marsailles (French) or Hell's Kitchen (Southwestern)

pigalle is reliable, not overly expensive and pretty good quality, although their food is not super exciting. but they've always got a table and they're great about getting you out the door on time.

Seconding Esca, Marseilles, and would add on West Bank Cafe. db bistro moderne is good, too.

Ha! The eternal question. I prefer to eat a little out of the way at Yakitori Totto or the Burger Joint at the Parker Meridien at 6pm, get out by 7:15 pm and walk leisurely to the theater.

Orso hands down. They willeven ask you what show you are seeing & time dinner accordingly. James McMahon is the consumate GM professional. Pizza, risotto & taramisu to kill for....

Gotta go with Caffe Cielo on 8th Avenue (full disclosure - it's a Gambuto Sr. enterprise). Now I can get down on the Old Man's disinterest in updating the menu, but I he does many things very well (like a homemade gnocchi from a recipe we cadged from a family run place in the hills of Tuscany). His portions are huge and he understands that pre-theater means you've got a show to get to so he makes sure you get your food in a timely fashion. Of course, if you tell him that you read about him from his son here on Serious Eats, well, you'll definitely get some extra friendly treatment.

Becco (46th between 8th and 9th) -- they get you in and out quickly, but the service is still great, and you can't beat the price of the prix fixe all-you-can eat pasta, and the cheap wine list. I've also never had a bad meal there...ever!

Casellula on 52nd and 9th is my favorite. All wine and cheese lovers have to check this place out. The food is great, the service attentive.. yes, they do ask you if you have a show to catch.. and they know their wines well.
