Best of Trader Joe ?
I can't believe that Rhode Island has a Trader Joe! I just found out and I'm going for the first time next week. What should I be looking for? What are some favorites and recommendations?

chili spiced mangoes. in the dried fruit and nuts aisle.
also, the pot-stickers in the frozen section... sometimes i even throw them in soup and use them as dumplings.
their cheese is usually a great deal and the TJ's water crackers are just as good as Carr's and half the price.

also, try searching for 'trader joe's' in the serious eats search box... lots of discussion on this topic!

I know that the stores in Seattle not always have them but the turkey burger are great!!

They have a lemon pasta that is awesome! I like it tossed with some leftover tuna and olive oil as a fast dinner.
I also love the selection of nuts/dried fruits. The TJ in New Mexico had a great selection of wines. Don't know what the alcohol laws are in all states, so this might not be available to you.

So I really really love these awesome mango/cream ice cream bars they have. I did a post about them a while back - hard to find as they sell out super quick.
I also think their frozen food section is bar none the best around. Easy to make dinners - their frozen fish and scallops are great! I also like their crabcakes - super easy and they go great with eggs - make your own crab benny at home.
They also sell great soups in a box - roasted red pepper, cream of tomato, butternut squash, corn...
They also sell Annie Chun's noodle bowls - udon, miso soup, teriyaki. Those are great as well.
Agree with the above on their nuts/dried fruits - they have dozens of varieties of trail mix.
Finally - definitely their wine & bar store if the Rhode Island location has one...very cheap and reasonable - everything at Trader Joe's is super reasonable - but especially their liquor. Can usually find local and organic brews as well...
I wish they would open another location in Manhattan - it's always so packed! :)

The best frozen veggies around! They have good prices on fresh herbs, too. For fresh produce, it depends on your location - I've been to a TJs that has a lot more loose produce, and then another that has prepackaged multi-packs of produce. Their coffee is a good deal. Great dried fruits, nuts, and chocolate covered whatevers. The greek yogurt is a good deal, too. They have good soups, decent jarred sauce, and cheap pasta that is still really good.

They carry a huge selection of different milks, my favorite being the almond milk. It's delicious, and that's coming from someone who hates rice and soy milk. They have great cereal and oatmeal to go with it.
Also wonderfully (or horribly?) addictive are their SEA-SALTED brownie bites. Their regular frozen croissants , not the chocolate ones, are well worth the trouble of defrosting overnight. They might be some of the best I've ever had!
I live across the street from Trader Joe's and go there often, but these are my favorites. Their pre-packaged fresh produce is hit or miss though.

Really I think it's best to crawl through the aisles and explore and just throw a few things in the cart cause they're there.
I love their flax seed tortillas, mochi ice cream, and most of their frozen Indian, Mexican, and pan Asian stuff is good for cheap lunches. The frozen fish and meats are good. They have a line of soups in boxes that are pretty decent. For such a small store (relative to most of the other groceries around here) they pack in a ton of stuff.

I like TJ's more for the things that I can't get anywhere else. A few of my must haves are...
hummus (either the cilantro hummus or the white bean & basil)
pita crackers (tastes like pita bread in crispy cracker form)
spicy black bean dip
roasted red pepper & eggplant spread
homemade pizza dough
cereals - granolas, strawberry or chocolate-filled bites
chocolate-covered, peanut butter filled pretzels
candies (peanut butter cups, dark choc. espresso beans, milk choc. covered cranberries, dark choc. pistachio toffee, mint-cremes, non-pareils)
I also sometimes get their soups, frozen veggies, and bread, but honestly, I can find some of these in other stores that I think are just as good and cheaper...

Two words: Frozen Naan. I love their naan, and they have wonderful basmati, and I love love love their Indian simmer sauces. Their fresh sausages (esp. the Hofmeister -- beer brats) are just amazing. The madagascar vanilla wafers are delicious. I'm a big fan of the Trader Joe's select chilean vineyards sauvignon blanc, and my husband loves Trader Jose beer (it's like Corona, but somehow lighter and fresher). Actually, we have yet to try anything at Trader Joe's that wasn't good -- enjoy exploring!

We like their Thai shrimp gyozas and their chicken chile-lime burgers from the freezer section. Oh, and their mandarin orange chicken makes a tasty, quick meal. The orange muscat champagne vinegar is always in our fridge; it mixes into a nice salad dressing for greens or cold noodle salads.
plantainsandkimchi at 9:57AM on 06/30/09
The gyoza is the best I've found - way above 99% of restaurants. The Tarte d'Alsace (frozen pizza section - unbelievable.) Salt & Pepper potato chips. The seasonal chocolate/truffle thing in the red-gold packaging. The Honey Moon Viognier in wine section. I try out something new every time I go. The only BIG disappointment has been the hollandaise.
Anneesha at 10:11AM on 06/30/09
Cannele, in the frozen dessert section. Haven't tried the chocolate yet but the regular far surpasses ones I have made at home, at significant cost and obsessive trial and error.

13 comments and no mention of the Everything Crackers! Garlicky tasty little bites good on their own or with a bit of cheese. I would NOT recomment TJ's cheese as every time I've purchased from there it's moldy within a week.
Seconding the Sea-Salt Brownie Bites... I've made myself sick overeating those before.
Most of their frozen apps are good for parties, too, though they took away Once Upon a Quiche, which... wtf TJ's?! Spanikopita is good and the little egg roll things aren't bad.
anysuchname at 12:17PM on 06/30/09
I am suprised nobody has mentioned the ginger snaps. They are in a clear plastic tub and I think they are called "tripple ginger snaps". They are the BEST ginger snaps I have ever had. I buy them in bulk (unfortunetly, I also eat them in bulk) and are wonderful as a snack with ice cold milk, or crushed and added to other recipes. I haven't been impressed with the produce section at my store, but pretty much everything else is worth a shot!
mhurst826 at 12:27PM on 06/30/09
TJ's has the best coffee deals I've ever seen. Depending on the variety, it's generally less than $10 per pound of organic, fair trade, shade grown deliciousness.
Embackus at 2:08PM on 06/30/09
CORNBREAD MIX. It is the best I have ever had, even better than some homemade recipes!
decemberain27 at 5:19PM on 06/30/09
YES ! try the coffee, thery have a good organic coffee selection. If you are a organic/ fair trade coffee person I would also reccomend you try Weaver's coffee. Have fun shopping !
socaljane at 6:19PM on 06/30/09
I'm not very impressed with Trader Joe's. They have mostly prepackaged specialty items (at my location anyways), and I thought it disconcerting that there is no meat or deli counter at all. I can see the appeal of it if you are in an area where there isn't much variety (i.e. small town). But in my city I can find really fresh ingredients, specialty and ethnic foods at various markets, grocery stores and farmer markets. I would rather go to the corner Halal (or Asian, or Mexican, etc.) market and explore the variety, support local business, and meet people. IMHO.

If you like hot sauce, try the Trader Joe's Chili Pepper Sauce or Jalapeno Pepper Sauce! Great!! Also, the Mini Chicken/Cilantro Wontons are excellent. And, for a salsa try the Pineapple Salsa. It's great on chips, chicken and everything in between!

Here are my favs from TJ's:
-Artisan Puffy Pastry (which I use to make a Cheat's Pain aux Chocolat)
-Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough (it's even better than the Nestle Toll House )
-Sipping Chocolate (available seasonally, winter)
-Joe's O's cereal
-Turkey & Rice stuffed red bell peppers (it's really good)
-Tiramisu (it's what I often bring to a potluck and it's always the first dish finished)
-Blood Orange Soda (this soda is always sold out, I've saw 1 woman put 10 bottles into her cart)
-Triple Ginger Cookies
-Chocolate Orange Sticks
- Carolans (sp?) Irish Cream
AnnieNT at 6:47PM on 06/30/09
Better prices than other stores on dried fruits and nuts. I like their frozen enchiladas, lasagna, tamales, etc. for cheap lunches (check the calorie counts, they reeeeeally vary). Also good prices on beer and wine.
I agree the cheese is not always a good bet. I buy goat cheese there because it's well-sealed, but the quality of their other cheeses I think is uneven.
Yes also on the triple ginger cookies and the everything crackers (and everything bagel chips).
Don't get attached to anything in particular there, or stock up -- they are notorious for axing products with no warning and never having them again.
jm chen at 6:50PM on 06/30/09
the thing i remember impressed me was there nut selection. if you have a great supermarket nearby this might not do it for you... but bags of unsalted cashews... yum!
blizcheetah at 12:35AM on 07/01/09
I live in Rhode Island and I've already been a couple times, so exciting! Trader Joe's is a little like a cult but I'm totally joining.
I don't but a ton of prepared foods (although I've tried a couple and been impressed) so I mostly love their prices on stuff like Italian pasta and dried fruits and nuts.
Sadly though there is no wine section since you can't sell it in grocery stores in Rhode Island :(
swampyankee at 10:28AM on 07/01/09
- I don't know what they are called but the are butter cookies with chocolate centers. SO GOOD
- Frozen fish items like the seafood mix are great
- Vanilla beans are pretty affordable, especially compared to other places by me
meem21 at 10:54AM on 07/01/09
@mhurst826. Completely agree. The triple ginger snaps are awesome. I can't buy them anymore, because there is NO stopping me when I get into them.
I love orange flavored dried cranberries in my oatmeal and TJ's are the best and cheap!
I love to go and just get something new every time (it takes me almost an hour to get to my closest TJ). It is my favorite go to spot when i want to do something fun .. yet practical 8-).

Great place to buy nuts (cashews, pecans, walnuts) - much cheaper than Whole Foods. Generally, Trader Joe's is fantastic for basics and less expensive than its competition. By basics, bread, condiments - anything packaged.
I wouldn't buy produce there, however, it's better from a farmer's market or a Whole Foods-type store.

Oh Trader Joes!
@anysuchname- Yes! Everything crackers!! With hummus...
Our favs:
-Masala Veggie burgers
-Mandrain Orange chicken and BBQ teriyaki chicken, also buy the harvest hodgepodge mixed veg. stir-fry them today, its better and cheaper than chinese take out for two.
-Soymilk, I buy the big boxes, much cheaper
-Jojo's Tj's Oreos, AMAZING! many flavors
Just pick up something new every time you go. Every visit is an adventure!
The Indecisive Eater at 10:53AM on 07/02/09
