best donut/doughnuts in nyc?

about once every 2-3 years i crave a jelly donut - the last one i had was a raspberry jelly donut from the DOUGHNUT (DONUT)PLANT .... i have to say it was exquisite.

i'll be in town for the fancy food show at the end of the month and would like to make a detour for a good donut, so it's gotta be the best. jelly donuts only, and not grape. any suggestions?

in my humble opinion, the donut you had is the best in nyc! i love donut plant....

Yea, I'd go there. I actually walked right by it yesterday without getting anything because we were with friends and on our way to dinner. I kick myself now. Perhaps next weekend...

I had the boston cream donut from Doughnut Planet and my God, was that great!! I think the best actually...I ditto kristin314's response... Until someone else tells me differently, I'm sticking with DP..
Alot of the SE crew has great suggestions and I'm open to a few myself..

a sidebar--@pooch-had me some snails n' sauce yesterday...used my trusty toothpick to yank those suckers out! ha ha (I know it doesn't go great with a doughnout blog but what the heck)

@italiancupcake - wow, i'm so happy for you.... i haven't had them in years but i can still taste them.... where do you get the snails from?

on the other doughnut note: i'm so bummed out because i'm going to the show on monday and DP is closed..... sh_t.!

there was a thread awhile ago--"A guide to the best donuts in N.Y."..written on 10/21/08 but I think most are a "weekend only" treat...the thread says the best jelly donut is at Trois Pommes..and the best jam is at Bouchon ...good luck on your donut quest--:o)

re: snails--got them in my neighborhood--a fish place in Howard Beach, Queens...

@italiancc: ah yes, howard beach! you can still find all the old italian food there.... any eels? i used to live in ridgewood/bushwick! we used to go fishing off of the bridge -- on the way to rockaway. by the way, pastosa's ravioli are the best.

Sorry SE site..a quick trip thru Memory Lane then back to donuts!!
@ pooch---Eels, yes, you can get them all over--great fried & sauteed in wine ... Ditto on Pastosa's ..Was by the bridge today-jogging..so you lived in Ridgewood/Bushwick!-so we're paisans (sp?) ha ha

back to donuts for the sake of the thread--I believe Bouchon makes a great jam & eel flavored donut?? KIDDING......

@italiancc: i'll have to check out bouchon for the donuts.... and next time i'm visiting my bro in middle village, i'll have to check out the eels in howard beach. he likes crispy creme donuts - but i think they're way
too sweet now. they used to be decent when they first came on the scene up here in nyc. my best friends mom used to fry ricotta zeppole in bushwick, better than any donut you could buy anywhere!

small world...... paisan!

I'll reiterate: the best doughnut in NYC is indeed anything from the Doughut Plant. Particularly the jelly-filled ones. Oh my they are amazing. Their PB&J are divine. I thought they were going to be gross but they are in fact my favorite. The blackberry jam + vanilla glaze are good, too, but the PB& J jellies are the best. But everything there is amazing. In fact I am going to go there tomorrow morning because now I desperately want three....I mean, one. ;)

@pooch: Here's Kathy Chan's guide to NYC doughnuts from SE NY, but as everyone else has said, Doughnut Plant is the way to go.

@Pooch-- you can buy DP donuts at Dean and Deluca as well. If you're going to be at Javits, I'd recommend going to the D&D on 8th and 40th/41st (in the NYTimes building); they won't be as fresh-from-the-oven as they are at the Plant, but they'll be a good enough substitute on a Monday!
