Baguettes? Black Forest Cake? Weiner Schniztel?
I'm leaving for a short Euro trip next week (Germany, the Netherlands, France, maybe Spain if i can squeeze) and as I haven't been there in almost exactly 20 years, I'm very excited this trip. Personally, I could live off of baguettes and carbs for the entire trip, but I'd really like suggestions.
So far the trip is: 1 day in Frankfurt, 4 days in Munich, 2 days in Amsterdam, 1 day The Hague, 2 days in Normandy & the Loire, 2 days in Paris, 2 days in Nice and then either squeezing 2 more days in Spain or in France.
Soo, suggestions please! :)
I'm not a red meat or pork eater, health reasons and they make me ridiculously sick, but other than that I'm pretty open!
thanks!
And yes, I know weiner schniztel is Austrian.

The best food I had in Munich was in Weinhaus Neuner on Herzogspitalstr. Refined cuisine, good winelist, clean 19th century decor and quite affordable for lunch.
For beer, I like Augustinerkeller and the Hofbrauhaus opposite the opera house.

Out of that list of cities, I've only been to Nice and Paris. In Nice, I snacked on chocolate gelato and cheese on baguettes. In Paris, it was nutella crepes and cheese on baguettes. Clearly, I have a dairy and carb addiction.

The Hague: Indonesian restaurant Garoeda
Scheveningen (day trip from The Hague) steamed mussels at a café on the beach
Amsterdam: pannekoken, gouda cheese bröjes, and Heineken

Oh the cheeses and breads, desserts of all sorts. Chicken cordon bleu, German fried chicken, sausages (get chicken), the choices are endless. I am so jealous, have a great trip.

ok, strangely you have listed every country/city i have been bouncing between for the past year (i moved to frankfurt from nyc last year, family from normandy). anyhow, as far as frankfurt goes - definitely get out of the tourist rut, do NOT eat in the dom/roemer or sachsenhausen areas. go to 'zur sonne' for dinner, absolutely gorgeous garden, have the 'forelle' (river trout) or opt for the vegetarian version of the 'gruene sosse' (a cream based sauce with seven herbs blended in -- incredibly light on the palate). and normally i am not a beer person, but german beer is actually quite delicious. don't get sausages, they blow. normandy - definitely make sure you get "gaufre" (waffles) and get shellfish - "coquillage" -- absolutely amazing assortments. i had ray in a butter sauce this past weekend, and it literally melted in my mouth. as far as amsterdam/netherlands -- definitely get a stroopwaffel - crisp, thin waffle sandwiches, with a bit of syrup between them. i know i used to get them at citarella in nyc, but they don't compare with the ones in the netherlands. oh and try to get matjes (herring) from one of the fishing stands. in nice, try to get scallops or oysters, and in paris, definitely stop at one of the known bakeries for baguette/brioche/pain au chocolat/pain aux raisins -- i personally like the products at paul. though one thing i will say - german chocolate is pretty amazing -- my family in france and in nyc asks me to bring suitcases of limited edition ritter whenever i visit. and try the riesling in germany as well. as far as spain goes, depends completely where you will be -- but of course get the churros con chocolate, various tapas (pulpo, gambas, etc). and if in catalunya, try the pan tomaca/ pan amb tomaquet. you will regret any time you've wasted on bruschette. and french cheeses!
sorry for the mouthful, but i think the best thing so far of my expat life has been the food travels!

and try the frankfurter pudding at a local bakery in frankfurt -- SO GOOD! (they have especially good ones at backerie klein on berger strasse). and this may raise contention because i know bretagne is supposed to be the home of the crepe -- but if you manage to find yourself in st. malo, in normandy -- the best crepes i've ever had, and i've spent part of nearly every summer of my life in bretagne/brittany...

Ooh, thanks for posting this--my husband is headed to Frankfurt, Munich and Paris. He's been to Paris a lot lately, but never to Frankfurt and Munich. He's also headed to Beijing and Tokyo. It's going to be a busy July and it's always great to get suggestions from the SE community. Since you'll be traveling through France, a tour of a vineyard might be a nice stop.
SE writer Kerry Saretsky gave me this response when I asked her advice on dining in Paris:
@dhorst: I'm in love with a little restaurant, and for the life of me, I cannot remember its name. But I can tell you exactly where it is. If you take the Pont Neuf from the Left Bank onto the Ile de la Cite (where Notre Dame is), and then turn right, you'll find yourself in the most enchanted little square in Paris (in my opinion): Place Dauphine. On the right is a lovely little restaurant with chairs spilling out onto the square. I had artichoke vinaigrette, salmon tartare, and tarte tatin last time I was there, and they were just as lovely as the scenery. Also, I usually stay in Saint Germain, and I always go to Relais de l'Entrecote (20, rue st. benoit) for the best steak frites in town, and I always make it a point to stop by at Cafe de Flore by myself. The people watching is superb, and the food, no matter how common-sounding, is always just perfect.
Enjoy yourself.

Of this list, I've only been to Amsterdam. I say you need to eat some pannenkoeken (pancakes) because that's what they're known for! I had some delicious pannenkoeken with raspberry and blackberry topping.
