Anybody else a hoarder?
I just finished baking a batch of my very favorite cranberry muffins. I love cranberry muffins and I eat one virtually every day. Problem is where do you buy fresh cranberries in June? Answer - you don't. You buy them from November 'til January or whenever the supply dries up. I buy a few bags of fresh cranberries every time I go shopping in November and December. I store the bags of cranberries in zipper bags and freeze. We have an extra upright freezer in our basement. Then I have fresh frozen cranberries for my muffins all year long. I like knowing I have that stash available. I can't be the only one who does something like this. Fess up- who else hoards food or ingredients?

I do hoarding (though generally with things, not food), but my mom also is a SERIOUS cranberry hoarder! Our freezer is almost entirely cranberries. I love it!

I wouldn't call that hoarding necessarily. That is just stocking up what you will actually use.
I buy and pick lots of fresh fruits in the summer and freeze or preserve it, and sometimes there is some left over still by next season. I love having enough to go all winter when I can and I like to share it out. I do the same with autumn fruits and veggies.
I will occasionally buy extra of a dry good like beans if they are on sale, but never to a huge amount.
Now my folks were hoarders. They are still trying to use up canned and dry goods they bought for that 2000 crash that they were sure was gonna happen. Mmmmm, 10 year old hash. Blech.

Why else would anyone own a freezer if they weren't going to stock up on things they like. I spend way too much time picking blueberries in the summer and freeze them for use all year. I also hoard things like cuts of meat I use regularly when they go on sale; for use later. During the holidays I buy a turkey when they are "loss leaders" for use later in the spring.
Now if you really want to talk hoarding, I can't remember the last time I threw away a glass jar that looked like I might be able to can or store something in it. I may have to build a room addition to house all my jars ;~O

My mom makes fun of me because by the end of strawberry season my freezer is half-full with gallon-size bags of frozen quartered strawberries. I use them all year in smoothies and cobblers. This year I'm going to add peaches to my freezer stash.
I also have dozens of jars of homemade jam to get me through the year (and share at Christmas).

Pastorelli's pizza sauce...it's getting harder and harder to find around here. I finally found a quick recipe I like just as well, but when I run across those little cans somewhere, I forget all about the recipe and buy a dozen!

On sale, Hard to find candy- Haribo gummies in unusual shapes, Baci, Scharffen Berger bars... treasures from the Grocery outlet or discount stores that I only find one or two times a year.

@czken - I'm a jar hoarder too! I store dried beans and grains in them. As others have mentioned, buying extra stuff on sale or in season and freezing or canning just makes good sense.
When I was a very little girl, I hoarded my candy. My mom was pretty strict about how much I could have, so I'd put it into an index card holder (remember those?) and save it. Sometimes I'd secretly take it all out and spread it before me like Midas gloating over his fortune. This was before I learned that things get stale, moldy or full of bugs if you don't store them properly. What can I say? I was probably 3 or 4 at the time.

I hoard everything. When I can buy things on sale I do. When I go to a place I only go now and then I do. 1 deep freeze, 2 refrigerators. Large pantry and two smaller holding areas. I hoard therefore I am.

I am so NOT a hoarder--I don't like the idea of tons of food that I HAVE to eat, whether I want to or not, otherwise it will 'go to waste.' Also, I like to buy and use my food fresh--I tend to go 'off' on food if I see it sitting around too long, even in a freezer.
But I don't think there is anything wrong with hoarding, if it gets used--I do have some friends who buy in bulk from Costco and have food sitting around from 2003 in their freezers (perhaps I exaggerate, but at least 1-2 years old).
I once heard it said on a cooking show--'look at the date, and look at a picture from your kid on that date. If the kid in the picture looks different than your kid does now, throw it out.'

i agree with sadiepix, where i live it's speckled trout, shrimp and crab season and i'm catching quite a bit right now. i only keep seafood for six months or less in the freezer, if i get to five months and there is still a lot, i give it to co-workers. and as pooch does, i also stock up on good olive when it's on sale, i ain't never seen an expiration date on this stuff.

@JerzeeTomato Dried cranberries are fine for lots of things but not my cranberry muffins - too sweet I think, @Cary I forgot about the pizza sauce but my hubby hoards that.

My kids were just laughing at me for wanting to get my usual 20-pack of toilet tissue when we already have 14 rolls in the basement. Some things you hoard because, well, finding yourself short is not pleasant.
As for food-"hoarding", I have an indeterminate # of cans of tomatoes, bags of pasta, and other basics just in case. But I prefer to think of it as Being Prepared, not Hoarding. Maternal instincts and all that.

Mustard, mustard, mustard. There are some I must always have backups of and then there are the ones that I have because they have caught my eye and I simply must try. Yay, mustard!

I try. Really, I do. I see stuff on sale and buy mass quantities and put it in the cupboard or freezer. But then I see it there and end up eating a lot of whatever it was that I was hoarding in a short period of time.

If you buy the non sweetned ones they will work nice. I buy them at TJ's.
Craisins are sweetened I believe.

I hoard. I have 50 lbs of rice, 50 lbs of beans, enough canned tomatoes and spices to make 100 gallons of spaghetti sauce, and the list goes on. You would be hard pressed to find room in any of my cupboards...chopped clams, soups, fish steaks, coconut milk...other then fresh foods, I could probably eat for a year without shopping.

definite hoarder. particularly when it comes to a specific variety of stuffing cubes that we cannot find in this area of NC. in fact, during a trip back home for a funeral, my father and i went to the town's two grocery stores and bought them out of the stuffing cubes to bring back to NC with us!

I used to hoard meat and chicken when it was on sale and before I knew it I had two freezers filled. I would hear that the price of something related to its production was going up or was in short supply and I just knew that meant no more porterhouse steaks for the family. Then the recession hit and my business was affected and I realized that I had to eat what was in my freezer and pantry. Good thing I found some meat that had been in the freezer for two years! What a crazy compulsion it was.

@sadiepix - I'm glad to see I'm not the only child of parents who thought y2k would be real and stocked up accordingly. My mother actually canned MEAT in preparation as well. I haven't been much of a food hoarder, but I want to be better about capitalizing on fresh, cheap good produce in the summer and freezing it so we have better stuff throughout the year. I only have an upright fridge, and though it is massive, the freezer section isn't exactly on par with a deep-freeze, so there won't be hoarding on a massive scale.

Yeah I call it "stocking up" too...it sounds nicer than hoarding. Generally I don't stock up that much - I only cook for myself, so if I buy too much of one item, it takes forever to go through it (and I can't afford to just throw extra things out). I do tend to stock up on my favorite brand of whole coffee beans (Peet's) when they're on sale, and also buy baking goods in bulk when they're on sale. The one other specific thing I can think of is Hershey's cinnamon baking chips. They're only available during the holiday season - why I don't know; it drives me nuts, though - so I buy tons of bags so I can use them for months.

Not so much hoarding, but there are certain things I will buy even though I don't need them immediately. If I use a lot of a particular brand of something, and it's on sale, I'll buy extra. Like semolina flour. Or certain olive oils.
I'm also a sucker for new grains, beans, rices and flours. I might not know what it is, but if it's not going to break the bank, I buy now and figure out later. Which is a lot better when I'm buying a dried product than when I run across a weird new veggie and have no idea how I'm going to use it.

This is not hoarding, it's being prepared! @pooch---I'm with you! Huge olive oil prepared girl.i get most of my vinegars and olive oils at T.J Max: it is so much less expensive than speciality stores such as William Sonoma
and so on.My hubby gets soooo aggravated when he opens the pantry for the ketchup and he is presented with the "olive oil section"

Look, the bottom line is, if it's a great price, and a rare item that you may need for something in the future if you find the right creative moment, get it.
It's never a bad thing to be prepared for an impromptu dinner party.

Corned Beef flats. When they go on sale in March I typically buy 8-10. They're rediculously expensive otherwise. They freeze quite nicely.

I wouldn't call it hoarding either. It's more like buying stuff when it's available vs. stuff you don't need (which is how I construe "hoarding"). I like to stockpile (THAT's the word!) fresh cranberries in November and blueberries in summer. I also freeze fresh peaches if I'm lucky enough to have a friend with a tree. I pit them, leave them with the skin on, and freeze in ziplock bags. I've also been known to pit cherries and freeze them.
I guess you could say I have a large amount of olive oil on hand as well - but it always gets used and none goes to waste.

Putting stuff in the freezer is not hoarding. It's saving with a hope. If the electricity goes out long term without a household generator, you better get grilling & smoking & dehydrating those tidbits for the neighborhood party.
Now, consider what you have in dry pantry storage. Is it enough for 3 months?

My goodness, dear, that's not hoarding. That's thrift. Right now I'm buying nectarines by the crate and slicing and freezing them in gallon ziplocs. Also forcing my children to pick strawberries at the U-pick until their little fingers fall off and freezing, canning, and dehydrating them. Little further on in the season it will be blueberries and raspberries, then blackberries. And oh, the tomatoes! On and on it goes. But I'll be happy in november when I look into my stocked pantry.

I wish I had the space to hoard. You would not believe how quickly I go through lemon juice and pepperoncini. I buy the largest containers, but I always seem to be running out.

Oh, I do tend to hoard Friendship brand cottage cheese (4% is my guilty pleasure). It seems to disappear from the grocery store for months at a time, so I stock up. And I pay no attention to the expiration dates. It's already spoiled milk, how is it going to go bad?

@Kerosena, that's funny, I think I have only seen that brand at the Grocery Outlet... maybe thats where it goes when it disappears from your store. If you have one nearby, check it out.
