Anchorage!
I am getting sent out to anchorage (all by myself) for work. I will be spending 8 days there next week. I have never been to Alaska and don't want to miss out on the scenery and seafood. Does anyone have any good restaurant recommendations? I am looking for places where a lone diner won't be too uncomfortable. Thanks!

Do you like beer? If so, definitely stop by the (award-winning) Midnight Sun Brewing Company for a tour and tasting. They share a small building with a taxidermist, so the tap room has lots of preserved animals for your viewing pleasure, in case you didn't see enough in the airport... or your hotel.. or in the Sears Mall.. or... you get the picture...
Um, Arctic Roadrunner! (burgers)
Moose's Tooth (sit-down local pizza place with in-house microbrews) (loooong wait, usually, but seats at the bar.)
Lucky Wishbone (fried chicken... birds flown in fresh!)
Marx Brothers Cafe (fancier, alaskan seafood-centric)
Take a drive out to Girdwood (see portage glacier and turnagain arm), and there's The Double Musky. (cajun with alaskan seafood).
If you have time for a quick day hike, there are a lot of little peaks in the Chugach Range in Anchorage... Flat Top is a very well-maintained hike, with a clear path the whole way. All the little peaks adjacent to it have routes as well, with fewer people on the trail.
Man, I'm jealous! Will you be there this weekend, too? There are sure to be lots of solstice celebrations to check out, if so.

There are loads of places to go while you're here! Great food, and we have a few really good microbreweries that are worth checking out. Simon & Seafort's is one of the nicer places in town. Humpy's has *amazing* food, and tons of beer on tap. The Glacier Brewhouse makes their own beer, has really good food and a fun atmosphere (the calamari is my favorite!). One of Anchorage's best diners? The Lucky Wishbone, the best friend chicken in town and pretty great burgers. All 4 of these places are down town. If you feel like wandering, there is Moose's Tooth, which is famous for their pizza and homebrew. The Peanut Farm has a beautiful deck outside to sit and watch the river and get a nice relaxing bite. I hope that helps you to get started! Safe travels!

Oh, also, Glacier Brewing Company is a nice restaurant down town.
There are lots of nice places down town with local seafood. Humpy's, for instance. ("humpy" is the other name for "pink" salmon, in case you didn't know).
F Street, on F street, is nice and laid back.
I'm sure I'm missing some important places, and new places... but it's a start!

@chugiakkatie
Looks like we have a lot of the same tastes! You know, in all my years in Anchorage, I never actually went to The Peanut Farm? I'd go to the Arctic Roadrunner's outpost across the street fairly frequently, and I even worked within blocks of that intersection for a time... but I never stopped in. I'll have to check it out next time...

Wow! Thanks to both of you for your enthusiastic responses.
I am leaving this Sunday, so will likely miss any solstice events. However, I am definitely excited to try out some of your recommendations. I am planning on checking out some of those breweries- I have heard lots of good things!
Semarr- I was thinking of heading down to Girdwood so I will seek out the Double Musky. I have been told that the Seward highway drive is the most beautiful in the world.
I am really looking forward to this trip. I wasn't given much notice, and I am traveling by myself- but I am determined to make the best of it! It's a long flight from DC, but I am super excited to get up there!

Oh, I am SOOOOO jealous! I spent a month in Anchorage while my ex did a month's rotation there ... it's been awhile, so I'll have to think back to some of the food. But absolutely, without hesitation, go to the Moose's Tooth; I still have one of their takeout menus for memories, inspiration, longing. I even violated a Lenten vow to give up sugar in order to have a ginger ale there ....
The trip down the Seward really is beautiful; we took it down to Homer, which has great funky character and fabulous coffee joints!
