Where to get fresh morels?
Are they still available at the Union Square Greenmarket and if so, what days? Also if you know of any other places to get them (including other greenmarkets) that would be greatly appreciated.

I haven't seen any at the greenmarkets, but they have them at WholeFoods and at Fairway on a more or less consistent basis. Also check Manhattan Fruit Exchange at the Chelsea Market, they have a fantastic selection of shrooms. SOS Chef has some of the best mushrooms too. The price can vary wildly. At Fairway 125th st they were $72/lb last time I was there. At WholeFoods Columbus Circ they were only $30/lb. just last week. I've seen the there for $80.

Wednesdays, get there early, and go find Honey Hollow at the Union Square Greenmarket. They're big and yellow. $39.99 a pound for pick your own, grade A. $29.99 a pound for grade B. Pre-packed pints for $10.00 but they run out fast.
Dean and Deluca also has smaller, less spongy ones that are brown, but really expensive. I think $75/lb or so.

In a forest! Seriously if they grow locally, go foraging with someone experienced. So much fun.

My family actually lives on a farm in Maryland and we (my mother and I) went foraging this weekend, unfortunately we found none. We think that we just missed them. I was therefore disappointed and am now looking for a comparable replacement. Thanks for the input all!

I would love to go foraging except I have no car, no idea where they grow in the five boroughs of NYC, and don't know anybody who is experienced. D'oh!

Saw a picture of some awesome morels found in northern Michigan...so jealous. Chowcast.net.

@pielady; they're local for me too! I felt like bragging :)
Central Canada grows them wild around this time of year

Practically daily at any of about 40 farmers' markets here in the Portland, Oregon, metro area! Or you can find great pickings only about 30 minutes away by car on the flanks of Mt. Hood!

Update: Honey Hollow didn't make it to the Greenmarket this week. SOS Chefs often has morels but they said they ran out yesterday. Whole Foods Union Square didn't have any, but the one on Bowery and Houston did. $29.99/lb for ones from Turkey, they were a little on the dry side though.
