What's everybody been doing...?

The site seems to be more active tonight than it has been in quite a while. What has everyone been doing as the summer season is upon us?

20 Comments:

Well, the season is just taking off, but so far concerts, picnics, cooking up lots of seasonal goodness, Yerba Buena Gardens, movies, de Young Museum, dining out (Ethiopian, Indian, Thai, Pakistani, Persian), taking care of the yard, classes, cleaning house (well, blogging and cooking while my hunny cleans house, mostly).

This weekend we were supposed to take the bike over the hill (Santa Cruz Mountains) to the beach, but I had a migraine yesterday, which waylaid our plans. Today, I am taking it easy and catching up, getting ready for the week ahead.

Next weekend we'll tear up the pavement and take in the coast. The weekend after we'll probably hit the Great American Food and Music Fest. After that, we're hitting Disneyland for a few days for my hubby's birthday. Some camping, more rides on the motorcycle, weekend getaways, days in San Francisco, Santa Cruz, other fun local (Silicon Valley) spots, and lots of backyard grilling. Stuff like that. Some of which will end up on my blog, or twitter (@PaulaMaack), as usual.

How about you? Are you enjoying the season? Where in the world are you located, and what fun things are there to do in your area?

Cheers,

~ Paula

I am planning a wonderfully long and much-needed vacation to Northern CA and Southern & Central OR. If anyone has any suggestions for great food stops (cheap eats OR fancy stuff) I'd love to hear it! So daydreaming about this trip takes up much of my time. The CA redwoods and OR coast rocks!

Well, I finished my first year of grad school (YAY!), with finals and the like.

However, I had major spine surgery on the 20th, so I've been recovering as best as I can from that (I'm 25, it was very unexpected). Thankfully my parents are in town, so I've been able to hit up a few mom-and-pop joints here in Tucson that I haven't been to before.

I did post a thread here trying to find fellow Old Pueblo SEers for an eat-and-greet, but that didn't work out so well...

How about yourself?

Trying to get out in the world. I'm sure I'm an exception but I prefer fall and winter. Summer, I can take or leave. I know 99% of the population prefers spring and summer months.

BF calls me a "mushroom" because I like being inside.

@therealchiff - glad to hear someone else prefers winter -- i absolutely love the winter. i love all the seasons, but there's something about winter ... love the cold starry nights.....

now is my busy season - so i've been dashing around - burning the midnite oil.... but always have time to check out the SE site. it's my way of relaxing.....

We've been out to the Farmers Market just about every weekend and went to an Agriculture Expo at our local fairgrounds this weekend. It's also home to our large flea market. Don't you just love being out, walking around, looking at everybody's junk? Well, some of it is nice! Cooking, grilling, gardening, sunbathing....been busy and it's just now June!

(BTW, I do like the cooler months too. Nothing beats curling up with a good book or movie, eating some homemade soup, getting all cozy under a blanket!)

So far, I have gone on a two-week tour of Eastern and Central Europe to complete (the first part of) my second Master's in Intl Busniess, and then I had to prepare for and be in my brother's wedding, all the while, making up the work that I missed while I was gone, and now I have been getting my root canal taken care of, and am working on finishing my dissertation for my degree, which I hope to complete before the end of the summer.

I also registered to make 13 different items for the MN state fair, where last year I placed 3rd out of over 1000 entries for my peanut butter cookies, but my poor chocolate chip cookies got nothing, and my even worse ginger snaps just looked sad (my fault entirely on both of those, I think), so I am going for redemption in those. I don't mind not placing, I have only placed that once, which was awesome....but I would like all of my entries to turn out how I *want* them to be, so I am re-doing a few of them. Plus, I am trying a few new categories, just for something new and challenging. :) Wish me luck!!

My bf calles me a vampire because I like to stay inside...and I'm pale...and I really like vampires. Maybe I AM a vampire...

Oh wait, I love to cook and eat! NOT a vampire.

Weeks go by and i forget about the "site" because I get so busy at work (that's where I use the computer 'caus I don't have one at home). When I do hook on to this food blog, it's because there's a lull at work and I have some spare time. Anyway, I, too, love winter having grown up in the northeast (Nova Scotia, then Syracuse, now Brooklyn). The part of summer I find unbearable is the hot/humid days. But I do like the mini-vacations I take with my family. We have plans to go to Lake George in July. And Labor Day, I'll do whatI do every Labor Day: go to the New York State Fair in Syracuse. I feel my year just isn't complete unless I go to the Fair.

I'm working 7 days a week until the end of June, reg job during the week and baking internship on weekends. I can't wait to be done because then I'll have time to cook with my CSA goodies starting in a few weeks. Hooray! I do have a Chilean wine tasting this week (yum!), will be upstate being the pastry chef for my bro's annual 4th of July party and then will take a vacation to Michigan and Chicago for some mid-Western eats. I'm actually more of an autumn person but it will be nice to get out and about in the warm weather

@chiffy - not so much winter, but in my ideal world, autumn would last 365 days (or 366 on occasion)!

That said, I can't wait for our U Pick far to open for strawberry and pea picking (should be this weekend)! Fresh peas was my favourite childhood snack...

I know why you like Autumn Brooke....cause it's your birthday! Me too.

I was born in fall too and I love fall the best.
It's the season for Big Appetite (well, at least in Japan)!

-something about high sky and fat horses.. is this a Chinese saying?

People in my office have been getting in trouble for too much web surfing so I cut way back. Now I'm on mainly when I'm proctoring tests and have to sit and watch the students (I bring my laptop.) I'm in grad school so if I'm on the computer at home, it is usually to do schoolwork, not to have fun. But on the other hand, sometimes I'm here to AVOID the studying. :)

Gardening and lots of yard work--actual landscaping tasks, such as digging out twenty year old shrubs. Man, those stumps/root systems are a real bitch to dig out. The yard is looking great, so hopefully more time to enjoy in the garden and kitchen.

Hola a todos (hello to all) I am from El Salvador, Central America, a tiny country sandwiched between Guatemala, Honduras and the Pacific Ocean, here is summer all year long, our "winter" (rainy season) is beggining right now, but it doesn't stop us from going to the beach, climb some volcano or go to our many lakes, grilling, or going to sample the seafood cocktails sitting in one of the beachside restaurants. I have been visiting this site for more than a year now and I love it, I've learned many many things, thanks to you all, I'm becoming a foodie.

Been busy with the kids and school winding down so I haven't had time to come on the site. Kid's last day of school is tomorrow, so needless to say I'm looking forward to "me" mornings. If I can get up early enough my puppies and i can get some great runs in, then I won't feel so guilty indulging in hubby's grill skills.

Had bad crap with my computer so it was down for a few weeks.

There are so few purely foodie discussion sites available these days, I don't think I'll ever stop coming to SE even if it seems that posting is at a standstill and I occasionally hear crickets.

Summer isn't as much a foodie season upon first glance but just think of all the non-cooked items we make in order to take advantage of the bounty of fruit and that smoky cooking apparatus in the yard. Summer food sort of just happens for me and it doesn't get the painstaking planning of Autumn or Winter food.

Looking forward to everyone's BBQ, beach party, family reunion, 3 day weekend, it's-way-too-hot-to-cook-inside and all around fair-weather foodie posts!

We're in Central Florida so grilling is pretty much a year-round activity for us. We do a lot of fish (Alaskan salmon and halibut that my husband caught there himself), asparagus, peppers, portobello mushrooms, squash and onion. My husband loves to grill so he'll fire it up for just about anything - burgers, hot dogs, chicken, ribs - and he does it very well, I might add. We enjoy a lot of time just drinking wine or beer outside while the food is cooking when it's not 100 degrees outside with 90% humidity. Floridians hibernate in the summer more than in the winter.

We're taking a trip to Maine and Nova Scotia in July with a one afternoon-one night stopover in Boston. Our very first 2-week vacation ever!

We also have lots of favorite restaurants that we go to where we can sit outside by the river or ocean. We attend art festivals and concerts at parks anywhere between St. Augustine and Orlando.
