Tipping on takeout?
We have been picking up dinner a lot lately. How much do you recommend tipping?

10-20%, depending on the place, how much I like it, how good the service is, etc. The Waiter at Waiter Rant recommends tipping around half of what you would for table service.

Isn't a tip based on service?
I did work in the food industry for a number of years and I did appreciate the tips I received however, I generally tip because the service was great not because it was expected.

This is my rule-of-thumb:
I get "regular" takeout from a favourite place (like my local northern-chinese rest) I tip lots and send christmas cards so they remember me as a customer. Remember: Karma!? Maybe I'm too optimistic
But other than that I would tip based on the above discression and because the FOOD IS GOOD! But I'm a bit too generous some times ahah I bought my city transit-driver a coffee on christmas haah

Generally, when I get take-out, I tip 10% unless there was some attitude involved, then I don't tip. If I had a lot of questions or I am served tea/water while I wait, frequently the case, it can be 20%.
If you plan on being a regular or are a regular, I think leaving a token of gratitude is nice if it is warranted.
Some people really do remember. We'll often get a free side at some of the places we frequent. On occasion, we've gotten a free entree and it's left at -- tell us how you like it. Customer leaves with more food, and they get input on a new dish.

When I get take out I always and I mean always wait with a beer or 2 and then get something to go for home, the Bf always eats at the place. Therefore I tip 20 percent.

Tipping for takeout is totally optional. Whatever you feel is fair is "right." If you order food and it gets delivered right away, piping hot and delicious, throw a bucket of money at the delivery guy. When you pick up takeout, same thing - if it's hot, fresh and fast, you can tip a small amount just to say "hey, great job!" It's not, however, considered "mandatory" to tip when you pick up food, as is tipping at the table or tipping a delivery guy. It's strictly gravy.
