Tea shops in Manhattan?

Does anyone know of a good spot for tea in manhattan? Or a nice quite dessert shop?

Podunk is charming and good, but spendy:

Teany, had good tea although the staff was a bit too hip and precious for my tastes.

Tea and Sympathy in the West Village has always been my favorite. Cozy and quirky with real British attitude.

Podunk spendy? You must be joking. It's the cheapest one by far.

The best afternoon tea services are at the hotels. Lady Mendl's is great, and so is the St Regis. Many others are good as well, including The Pierre, The Four Seasons, and Alice's Tea Cup.

Also, be warned that Teany caters to vegans, so you won't be able to get a traditional tea with scones and clotted cream there.

i like tea and sympathy too! for dessert places, i love batch (around the corner from t&s) but i heard a rumor it might be closing? batch has delicious chocolates and cookies and the people that work there are so nice! almondine (another bakery) is worth the trip to brooklyn - their almond croissants are ridiculously good. cupcake cafe on 18th street is in a children's book store, so it's a little more rambunctious in there - but if you have kids this is a great place to go. the cupcakes are so beautiful and i love the pound cake bottoms. lastly, i recommend milk and cookies in the west village - although it gets a little crowded. the new york magazine ran an article recently called "caffience cluster: west village coffee shops" i bet some of those places are good for tea.

There's also Amai Tea and Bake House in Gramercy...lots of yummy loose leaf teas.

Batch has already closed. They are relocating later on this year to Chelsea.

Amai Tea and Bake House also closed.

i am glad batch plans to reopen! thanks for the update, kathryn.

Alice's Teacup all over the city. They have a huge selection of teas and delicious scones, sandwiches, and desserts!

Great dessert place is Chikalicious Dessert Bar!

Thé Adore on 13th Street is sweet.

The Mandarin Oriental is swank

Otherwise, I'd second Lady Mendl's and Alice's Tea Cup, the former for a nice proper experience and the latter just for fun (and great scones!).

I don't even like tea, but I like tea shops. Weird? Anyway, I recommend Alice's Tea Cup (had my bridal shower there) and Tea & Sympathy (really good sticky toffee pudding) for a more casual time. The Palm Court at The Plaza is closed for renovations right now, but when that opens back up, it's a nice spot for fancy tea. I don't have personal experience, but my friends also recommend the St Regis and Russian Tea Room for other fancy places.

If you like teas of Asian origin try Cha-An in East Village. The desserts are good too. Just remember it's cash only and it's a small place.

But if we're talking dessert shops CHikaLicious is the best place in NY!

I forgot about Alice's Tea Cup. They have a wonderful tea list and yummy scones with clotted cream.

Tafu was a nice place in the DoubleTree in Midtown East, more grab and go, but they had nice Japanese influenced sweets — matcha macaroons. I heard they may have just closed though. Follow Me Cafe has tea and crepes, neither are exceptional but the spot is "cute," certainly relaxing. St. Alp's Tea House in the East Village, lots of bubble teas, although it can get loud and busy. For straight up sweets in Hells Kitchen drop by Kyotofu.

Tafu is gone, sadly. It was the best bowl of matcha in the city.

Cha An is still around, though, if you like the Japanese style of tea service. It's a hidden gem on 9th St., and the tea selection is extensive (and not all Japanese greens). The food is exquisite, too. It's not cheap, but it's not ridiculous.

If you want that- and you like the traditional British high tea service- do treat yourself to the Astor Court at the St. Regis some afternoon. It's over the top and completely worth it. (And under $50 if you don't opt for Champagne. But is not drinking a glass of Champagne ever really an option?)

Radiance Tea House on 55th btw. 6th and 7th Aves is outstanding. A lot of variety but Chinese teas are the way to go (as is true everywhere).
