Substitute Self-Rising Flour for AP Flour
I am NOT a baker and wondering if I can substitute self-rising flour for AP flour in most recipes. For some bizaare reason I have 3 lbs. of self-rising flour and hardly any AP flour.
Baking help or suggestions are very much appreciated.

If you're using the self rising for baking then omit any baking powder or salt from your recipe because they're already in the self rising. If you're using it as a coating or to make a roux it doesn't matter.

Since self-raising flour is all-purpose flour with baking powder and salt added, you should only use it when a recipe calls for those ingredients. Using for things like yeast cakes and breads would not be a good idea. Of course, the easiest way to use it would be to look for recipes that call for it specifically.

Answer is no.

I agree with JerzeeTomato, it really isn't a good idea to substitute as the extra ingredients will mess up most recipes asking for AP. I'd use the self-rising for something like biscuits (I mean, who doesn't like a good biscuit anyway?) and get some AP if you're planning on baking other things. Good luck!

Thanks everyone ~ if I do start baking, then I'd best go get some AP flour and not try to mess stuff up by doing a flour substitute. I've gotten much more interested in baking since joining SE and reading all of the yummy recipes and additional comments.
Thanks again,
