San Fran, we need your help at Monterey Market!
This is an article from the SF Gate by Liz Hafalia. Please get involved and support Bill and Judy. Few stores have had such an impact on what and how we eat than Monterey Market in Berkeley. However, philosophical difference between family members on how to run the business threatens to derail the 48-year tradition. The rift has been widening for some time, but on May 20, Bill Fujimoto sent a letter to supporters that reads in part: I wish to announce that both Judy and I have submitted our resignations from Monterey Market today. Our last day will be June 3. Unfortunately, the dispute with Robert Fujimoto, Gloria Fujimoto, Scott Fujimoto, and Steven Fujimoto and myself could not be resolved. I am not sure what I will be doing next. Bay Area chefs aren't taking this news in stride. Judy Rodgers of Zuni Cafe, one of the market's regular customers, has written a letter urging loyal customers to take a stand. She writes, in part: Bill and Judy's departure is a terrible loss; the market could not continue to be what it has been. Its role as an incubator, nurturer, test marketer and sustainer of the farms, farmers, foods, communities and values we share is enormous. We stand to lose all this. Monterey Market has been in business since 1961 and has been run by the family since that time. Bill Fujimoto was one of the first to support and nurture community agriculture. In the letter, here's what Rodgers proposes: Currently, Bill's siblings think they can run the market effectively, perhaps more profitably than Bill has. They are confident the revenue stream will continue as in the past. I hope we aggressively shatter these beliefs. There may be other issues in the dispute, but if the numbers aren't going to pan out, why would they want to own and run the market? What if, beginning immediately and continuing indefinitely, one by one, we inform Scott, Robert, Gloria and Steven Fujimoto that they won't have our business beyond June 3?
