Post Wisdom Teeth Extraction Food?
So I just had my wisdom teeth pulled and can't eat solid food.... Any interesting liquid/soft food suggestions outside of the typical ice cream, soup and mashed potatoes?

Pureed percodan? Naw, that's just me being evil again. Pureed bananas and strawberries mixed with a non-alcoholic sabayon would likely prove both tasty and energy giving. Whatever you consume, it is pretty much going to be of zero texture.

Shoot...I'll chew the Percodan with or without teeth. When I had mine out I ate refried beans and rice from Taco Bell. Ok, I was young and stupid but I WAS able to eat it and it tasted OK to me!

Pureed soups, (some good ones here).

Oh, fun. I had mine out just a couple years ago; my recovery was actually pretty smooth and swift, but for a while I ate a lot of oatmeal and smoothies. Oatmeal with a spoonful of peanut butter was a substantial meal (usually I just eat it plain with cinnamon and that's pretty filling, too! But PB has some protein & fat), or smoothies w/ yogurt and frozen fruits. Tofu curry isn't bad; as long as you don't fry the tofu, you can just mush it against the roof of your mouth w/ your tongue and not have to chew it, per say.

You can eat? Wow. I was so nauseated (it turns out that I was allergic to the anasthesia) that I couldn't eat anything, pureed or otherwise. i would recommend pancakes. You can make them mushy with syrup. :)

After I had mine removed, I just picked up some succuluant jerky strips from the local butcher shop and started gnawing.
My teeth stopped hurting after that.

I also started munching on some rocks outside the dental facility.

I lived on egg drop soup which I don't even like normally but my mom force fed me. It ended up being perfect. Soothing, salty, substantial. I also happen to love ice pops, so I snacked on those endlessly.
meem21 at 2:50PM on 05/26/09
Just make sure you eat within a few hours after you get out of post op or you might have a bad reaction to the pain medicine. Scrambled eggs are good. Be careful about food getting stuck in the holes! Cleaning them was not fun.
I think I was on soft foods for about 2-3 days and then I was fine.
missjess at 2:51PM on 05/26/09
nothing with little bits...I think rice is a bad idea, couscous too. Also, no apple sauce--the acid stings! Pudding was my favorite (no rice or tapioca though)...creamed soups are filling and tasty!
kmgagne at 3:19PM on 05/26/09
Don't eat rice for a few days or anything crunchy. I lived on scrambled eggs for a week.
bessfour at 3:21PM on 05/26/09
Also avoid anything with seeds but enjoy your ice cream, pudding and whipped cream concotions. This is probably the only time you'll actually have permission to pig out on those luscious eats!

Bacon flavored vodka?
smallkitchen at 3:27PM on 05/26/09
pasta foam!
caramel at 3:38PM on 05/26/09
i had a particularly bad time of it and didn't eat anything that needed to be chewed for about 2 weeks. My mom had the idea of purposely overcooking pasta so it was all but falling apart and adding a little butter (tomato sauce hurts) and it slid right down without chewing. i also let cereal sit in milk until mushy and that went down easily too.
ice cream actually made my mouth hurt worse, but pudding was great. as is yogurt, for a more nutritious but still mushy option.
just make sure you eat! before we figured the pasta trick i couldn't eat anything and ended up passing out from the pain meds.

@shourtney...How I feel for you. I had an extraction over 2 weeks ago and I'm just returning to normal. Dry socket, infection, the whole nine yards.
Hope you're on the mend soon.
bessfour at 4:46PM on 05/26/09
Granted it was about 20 years ago, but I ate Spaghetti-O's for a few days.

Fresh fruit/yogurt smoothies!
thehostess at 11:10PM on 05/26/09
you could mash up/puree other veggies too (cauliflower, sweet potatoes with brown sugar, and carrots are some of my favorites), not just potatoes, or add some leeks/shallots/etc. to up the flavor.
billyburgwife at 11:18PM on 05/26/09
Not sure if someone already mentioned it, but you'll be told NOT to use a straw so keep that in mind - the suction can inhibit healing (there's more involved but I don't want to be too graphic :->)
I used ice packs (those blue things wrapped in a cloth) on my face off and on for a few hours and i didn't have alot of swelling as a result.
As for foods, i would go for sorbets, ice cream, greek yogurt - mashed potatoes and gravy - anything smooth that you don't have to open too wide to eat. And you definitely need to eat with the pain meds, otherwise you'll be sick (TRUST me on that one -ewww).
Good luck!
missus_p at 12:26AM on 05/27/09
i used a rotation of frozen peas, corn, and mixed veggies for keeping my face cool the first few hours. They work extremely well as they are more pliable than most ice packs.
as for food, i dont really remember. probably yogurt shakes, softened ice cream, soup, mashed potatoes. jello felt soooo good.
blizcheetah at 1:01AM on 05/27/09
No really, I found some appetizing looking rocks near the first handicap parking spot, took a nibble, and enjoyed what followed. You're fine bro.
bagel at 1:45PM on 05/27/09
I remember having my wisdom teeth out at the oral surgeon and stopped at taco bell after and ate an order of nachos. for some reason i was craving them and it just didnt bother me at all. I guess i'm a little strange. I would suggest making chicken salad in the food processor, thats what my ex pretty much lived on for a while.
huneybumper at 2:04PM on 05/27/09
@Bagel, What the heck, are you some kind of alien?!?!?
bagel at 2:23PM on 05/27/09
@ the alien post-- NO
bagel at 2:25PM on 05/27/09
I am so sorry, I remember that. I lived on several variations of creamed potatoes (hot sauce, sour cream and chives, etc.), but maybe mashed avocado (skip lime juice) would give you some good fat? I think I pureed a meaty chili at some point, too. A good curried lentil soup might be nice, as well. Hope you heal quickly.
efreehling at 9:23PM on 05/27/09
My husband just came home from a 2 hour oral surgery for one tooth - ouch! - so we are facing the same situation.
I second and third the vote on meds. Foodwise:
-- Soft boiled eggs (old lady like, but high in protein)
-- Baked pototoes (insides only) with lots of soft toppings
-- Fresh fruit smoothies with protein powder added for, well, protein (Jamba Juice is good for this - lots of varieties).
-- Soft flaky foods like croissants and puff pastry
-- Creamed spinach with lemon zest & parmesan (chop really well)
-- Peanut butter and banana on chocolate ice cream
-- Lots of cold soothing lattes - no hot liquid for a few days!
Hope you feel better soon!

lol thanks everyone for your suggestions and the well wishes!
@Grumpy old man: If you could share your percodan smoothie recipe, that'd be awesome =D.
@caramel: do you have a good pasta foam recipe? haha. Did you see the recent amateur gourmet rant on foams?
@smallkitchen: I'd be hitting the bacon vodka if I wasn't on vicodin. Or maybe that's a good reason to start...hehe.
misterhee at 2:22PM on 05/28/09
I had my wisdom teeth taken out 3 weeks ago. Believe it or not, Easy Mac got me through the initial weekend. It's extra soft if you cook it right and feels better than pouring milkshakes down your system all day.

OH, you poor thing. I have 3 of my 4 WT and have no idea when I lost the 4th. They are all erupted and give me no trouble. I also have a mouth the size of a cave and I imagine this is why they don't bother me.
Try to get some hummus into you (for protein) and oatmeal (for nourishment first thing in the morning). Grab some nice pudding or mousse - just for the comfort!
Feel better.
therealchiffonade at 5:09PM on 05/28/09
well, STAY AWAY FROM RICE, nothing like getting one of those in there! But yogurt, oatmeal, cup of fruit salad, tater tots, soft foods. But do not use a straw and if you are to do Soups :) which you can dont slurp it from the bowl the suction will pull out the clot and youll have adry scocket and itll hurt like NO TOmarrow.......... Good luck healing.
mrswatts at 5:29PM on 05/28/09
No, he's not poor, he's just whining. Some guy earlier said that he could munch on nachos without any pain. I said that I could easily munch on a few rocks and I was fine. This guy is wasting not just his, but also all of our time. Quit whining, and start eating=D

This is really late... but for anyone who runs across this... I just had 5 (yes I had 5!) wisdom teeth removed 8 days ago. Oatmeal with brown sugar was my staple food. Boiled eggs were not so bad to eat. Pinto beans gave me the energy to do some homework after I went off the Vicoden. Ive been having a slow and painful recovery. But pudding, ice cream, ensure, applesauce, and the oatmeal kept me alive during particularly painful days. A week in im still on soft foods. I just finished eating some boiled perogies with sour cream and it worked out very well.. I boiled them a few mins extra to make them extra soft. Just make sure you eat. The pain medication made me vomit and trust me vomit does not feel good on the stitches. now that im just on motrin Red Sangria is my new pain killer :-)
