Moderately priced restaurant near Union Square in NYC?
We'll be meeting up with visiting relatives staying in the Union Square area next weekend. We'd like to take them to dinner somewhere nearby. American, Italian or Seafood would be best as several in our party have food allergies. I looked at the Union Square columns under SENY but all the restaurants seem to be either fast food/ethnic stands or very expensive (eg Bue Water Grill).
Any suggestions? Would another neighborhood nearby have more options? Thanks!

chat'n'chew, on sixteenth street, has some pretty decent food and the prices are reasonable...skip the dessert (the strawberry-red velvet cake i had there was too dry) and go to max brenner's chocolate shop on 13th and broadway afterwards (or eat the whole meal there - i've heard their non-chocolate foods are pretty tasty). there's also a heartland brewery right on union square, which is maybe overpriced but not terribly expensive (and the beers are tasty).

If you're looking for a seafood restaurant, City Crab is near there (on Park Avenue South) and has a year-round restaurant week menu.

Piola, on 12th and broadway. The pizzas are great, and so are the pastas and salad.

The Smith on Third Avenue between 10th and 11th. It's NYU-student-y, but comfortable, with better-than-decent American food at moderate prices. Burgers are killer! If the weather's nice it's semi-open-air.
I also second Piola. It's friendly there, too, partly because Brazilians own the place, and they're a famously friendly people.

Thanks for the responses. Chat n Chew looks like fun but we've had to give up "comfort foods" as well as burger joints for health reasons.
City Crab is a definite possibility. We've also had suggestions for Veselka, Paul and Jimmy's, and The Mermaid Inn - any feedback on these? We want a place that's not so noisy that we can't have conversation, with entrees around $20.

Veselka - Polish coffee shop. Fab, but not nearby and not super-healthy. Mermaid Inn is also not so nearby. Otto, Mario Batali's pizza join, is on Fifth and 8th (nearby) and you can put together a healthy meal there (roasted veggies etc) plus it's not very expensive. Via Emilia, a stylish little Italian place on Park South at 21st, might also work for you - it is reasonable, Adam Platt-touted, and nearby...

I've heard many, many good reviews of Tarallucci e vino.
