memorial day menu plans?

it's awfully quiet on the set tonite.... are you all marinating?

what's up for the weekend folks? grillin' or chillin'?

i'm working all weekend -- may squeeze in a little q on sunday afternoon... what's cooking with you?

36 Comments:

Brisket, potato salad, and pinto beans with jalapenos. I'm a traditionalist. Well, okay, I do like crusty white bread better than corn bread. I make that one concession.

Baby back ribs, potato salad, corn on the cob, green chile corn muffins, and trifle for dessert.

Not too sure yet...grilling for sure. I also want seafood (mussels & shrimp). Tonight I'm making Tom Ka Gai, Dumplings and Moo Shu Vegetables. I know, not very "American - Memorial Day" but it's only Friday! One can only make so much steak, burgers, salads, etc. Think I'll save that for Sunday/Monday!

We're going to cook minimally this weekend, like every other weekend, but lesser this weekend. We'll be eating out a lot since we have a few major events going on in our neighborhood.

The Cleveland Ribfest and the Greek Festival are the first things that pop into my head.

If we do make anything, it'll be something simple like kimbap and gyoza to snack on over the weekend.

Not sure what I'm making this weekend either. We do have a cook out to go to on Sunday....I'm either making mac salad or german potato salad for that. (I'd make LPC's potato salad..but then it would rain) I'm also make popper dip for that.
I know I'll be grilling at home on Sat & Mon...probably chicken one day & steaks the other....waiting for inspiration to come....lol!
This is our big gardening weekend...so whatever I do cook will be fairly quick & easy.

Depends on the weather (it's been rainy for about a week and more for the weekend) but I wouldn't mind just chillin' and not entertaining this year. Just do not feel like it. But if it does come down to having people over guess I can always get DH to grill some burgers. We grill all year so it's not a big deal and I can always plan a big July 4th party.

Steaks w/ chimichurri sauce, grilled portabello caps w/ goat cheese, cucumber/mint salad, lemon/basil orzo salad, some brats and some pub burgers w/ blue cheese. And some nice frosty beers to wash it all down!

big ol' steaks on the grills, some garlic burgers, a sweet potato salad, corn on the cob with dill butter, and the usual "snacks" .. and beer... lots and lots of beer. OH and a big batch of "skip and go nakeds"-beer, vodka, and frozen lemonade in large quantities.. real classy...;)

Marinated ribeyes on the grill, baked beans, and potato salad.
Root beer floats for dessert. :)

grilled italian sausage with roasted red pepper sandwiches, pasta salad, fruit salad, and angel food cake with whipped cream frosting and fresh strawberries. yum!

we're going to our friend's lake house and doing carne asada with corn tortillas, homemade salsa @ guac, cilantro lime rice, chips, the usual.

Classic American this weekend: grilled hamburgers and hot dogs, German Potato Salad, Baked Beans, Green Salad, Devilled Eggs and Angel Food Cake with berries for my Father In Law's birthday cake.

Serving up dogs with toppings from all over these United States (think Chicago, Coney, Baltimore, etc)--complete with Roseanne Cash's potato salad and cole slaw. We have a house full of guests, so also homemade Egg McMuffins, Scones, and Bagels. Oh, and homemade ice cream.

Big, juicy ribeye, baked potatoes with butter, sour cream, chives[from my herb pot]and a big salad! Bourbon for me..lemonade for husband! It's the South, y'all!

I'm sure we'll be grilling chicken & steaks. I need some ideas for some sides though. I'm sick of the traditional potato & macaroni salad. Any ideas?

Grandson's 14th birthday - he got to pick the menu. Lots of mashed potatoes, gravy & biscuits. Meatloaf, corn off the cob (he has braces) green beans, peaunt butter brownies (he doesn't like cake/frosting) and I'm throwing in a rhubarb/cherry pie (rhubarb patch is thriving this spring).

Going to a BBQ on Monday and bringing pulled pork and tiramisu. Really looking forward to it! Lots of fun at this friend's house. Hope everyone remembers the purpose of the day. Don't forget to fly the flag, please.

BBQ at some point...chicken, steak, homeade pasta or potato salad, corn on the cob, watermelon, etc etc....I have a craving for Momofuku's pork buns, so at some point this weekend, I might get a few of those and a slice of cake or 2....:o)...
@ realchiffonade--ditto your sentiments--remember the purpose of the day and fly that flag, if you have one!!

Marinated chicken, steak and veggie kebabs on the grill, baby green salad, corn on the cob, poatato salad, homemade rolls and cupcakes are on the menu for the family get together on Sunday afternoon. The family loves my potato salad--and the secret is to splash on a bit of rice wine vinegar, salt and pepper while the potatoes are still warm. The potatoes absorb it and it seasons them all the way through before adding the mayo, celery, onions, chives etc. after they've cooled. Sometimes I throw in baby peas--it's the only way I can get the fellas to eat peas.

Going to the beach. Going to catch a fish (or two). Bringing my portable gas grill and cooking the fish fresh from the ocean on the beach. If I do really catch a couple of fish (it would be a miracle) I might also break out the smoker too.

We are going to do a Tri tip and I'm also going to throw some Brat's on the grill. Also potato salad, corn on the cob, sliced tomatoes, and garlic bread.

Pulled pork, homemade rolls, two types of coleslaw (one with mayo, one with oil & vinegar), roasted red potato salad, grilled corn, roasted asparagus and mixed greens with strawberry vinaigrette.

So we are a little crazy--we're going to have a long lunch at a fabulous Mexican restuarant on Monday, but we're going to let the contents of Balduccis dictate what we eat on Sunday, but our biggest food story is taking a PISMO to town tomorrow! Photos to follow on the blog. :-)

@thegoch That sounds HEAVENLY.

Probley not too much because the BF and I have the flu and out appetites are not up to par. I am soooooo jealous of everyones menus, everything sounds so yummy.

Happy Memorial Day to American Serious Eaters! We had our long weekend last week - Victoria Day - I was out in Alberta visiting my husband and we dined on lucious Alberta beef in all its tasty forms! Since there is still snow on the ground out there, we didn't bbq. But tonight I'm contemplating grilling a prime rib - any hints?

last night it was grilled pizza. yum. tonight its hamburgers, (as in, burgers, hot dogs, brats, sausage, etc.) roasted potato salad, beans and cole slaw. tomorrow, its italian american days, all day! monday, brisket and whatever else the rest of the family brings. lots of wine all four days and some beer will be had by others :) love this weekend. one of my favorite of the year! let summer begin! cheers!

Today's work, tomorrow's wide open and will likely involve pork.

Monday is work at the bar with beer can chickens, grille dbbq shrimp, and thai pork skewers by our sister restaurant's chef. I get to sling drink specials all day. Micheladas and Barabados Deleriums (Barbados Punch Blue-ed up).

We always make lots of chicken wings and have come up with some wonderful recipes for different flavors. One of my favorites, is coffee chicken wings - unusual, but oh so deeeelish! Happy Memorial Day to you!

Check out my Chicken Wings Recipes page.

@mepolo, the weather's definitely too nice to risk the family's potato salad/rain curse this weekend! :-) We're in Virginia with my wife's youngest, who's an active-duty Marine. We'll be choosing from a number of restaurants in the area, and during the trip home tomorrow.

We're sticking with our traditional ribs and corn on the cob but branching out in the appetizer department with caponata and kalamata olives. And of course, beer and wine!

Today (Sunday) -- fried chicken, potato salad, coleslaw, tomatoes and biscuits.

Tomorrow -- pork souvlaki, tzatziki, pita and Greek salad.

We did ours Sunday. It was fantastic. Taco Dip & Fritos, Pulled Pork BBQ, Guava BBQ Baby Back Ribs, Baked Beans, Grilled Corn on the Cob, Coleslaw, mixed Fruit, Cucumber & Onions, Sun Tea

Beer and hot dogs. Not just any beer or hot dogs. I think I'll have some Grolsch and/or Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. The hot dogs were purchased at Wegman's yesterday and include Hartmann's, Thumann's, and Sahlen's.

It's my Birthday & we're in Montreal..thinking of indulging in fois gras for lunch at Boris Bistro & lamb tandoor for dinner at a place I've not tried called Devi. {think there might be a sister resto in NYC}

1. T-bone steaks on the grill (brought to room temp, rubbed with kosher salt, black pepper, garlic, and paprika)
2. Purple, Red, and Yukon fingerling potatoes, roasted in the oven (foil-packet style), dressed in olive oil, shallots, S+P, and garlic prior to roasting
3. Tomato salsa & chips (fresh tomatoes diced, spring onion, garlic, S+P, fresh lime, cilantro, diced pickled jalepenos from last year's garden)
4. Angel food cake sprinkled with sweet vermouth, topped with macerated strawberries and lightly whipped cream.

Kind of random, but really delicious!

@LPC - I didn't risk it...although I did try the recipe when you first posted it awhile back, and will definitely make it again! I made a traditional German potato salad, and popper dip for a party I went to.
I have to tell you, after I cooked the bacon, I debated on draining off some of the bacon grease before cooking the onions...then I thought "what would Grandma do?"....and proceeded to cook the onions & make the dressing w/ ALL of the bacon fat. It was delish! I think that's going to become my cooking mantra from now on... ;-)
