meat slicer woes

i picked up a used meat slicer .... not the greatest model, but i thought it would be good for my purpose. it's aluminum -- and when i slice on it i get a black residue on the meat or cheese.... not good. i personally have never seen this before, but then again, i've always used stainless steel slicers. it's not the blade itself causing this but the housing around the blade.

so my question is, has anyone ever seen this -- and what can i do to stop this from happening? help.....

Have you got a brand name and model number for it? If it is the kind that can be taken apart, tear it down and clean it up. The residue could be coming from a bad bearing or bushing. it's hard to say without a picture.

i've pulled it apart and cleaned it top to bottom.... bad bearing or bushing, hey? i'll have to check that out.... i don't even remember the brand name on it. whatever it is, it's definitely brand x. but will check it out with the manufacturer. tanks again, grumpy.... you're like the godfather of SE now. not in a bad godfather way, in a good godfather way.

As godfather of SE you need a lobster bib and some marinara sauce. You eat bread with that? LMAO

Black residue from aluminum is usually from a really thin layer of grease, in my experience. Try scrubbing it with a really good degreaser.

Did you buy it from me? Mine kept leaving black marks on my food, so I sold it to some random kid.

@bagel - you must have seen me comin'.... is that why you got rid of it? i think it's just some kind of leaching factor from the metal....

i scrubbed the damm thing down with bleach..... so there's no real grease on it .... but i'll do it again....

If all else fails, tear the thing down and soak the parts mineral spirits for a day or two, then wash them up with a detergent. You'll need a metal container big enough for the job and you will want to do this out in the garage or back yard. You can get the mineral spirits at any paint shop or a place like Loews or Home Depot.

Pooch, terribly sorry for your woes. I went to Jack's butcher shop previously and had them thoroughly inspect through it. They found no structural damage so that's a plus. I guess just clean it down with a lot of might and cleaner and hope for the best.

Any luck with that thing yet, Pooch?

nah, i haven't used it since.... i try to stay away from it these days....
i'm too busy to bother.... but thanks for asking grumpy.

I know what you mean. I've got a pile of junk that I try to stay away from. Like anyone else, I could probably write a book on the subject.
