Making Cake Batter ahead of time-bad idea?

I want to bake something to bring into work on Thursday, probably cupcakes.
I have more time tonight than I have tomorrow night.
Would it be a terrible idea to mix the batter tonight and bake it tomorrow?
I feel like I may have attempted this before with mixed success.
Will it affect the leavening?
Or should I just make the whole thing tonight and wait an extra day to bring to work.
