Looking for new hand mixer...

While I was at work today my boyfriend was home making me cookies. Unfortunately my hand mixer died right in the middle of mixing the dough. We've never had this problem before so I don't think we worked the mixer beyond its normal limits. It was a cheap one I got at Walmart back when I was in college.

So I need a new hand mixer... any recommendations?

(A stand mixer is out of the question since our kitchen is too small for one)

I'm happy with my Kitchen Aid five-speed hand mixer. I looked at a couple other brands, but Kitchen Aid came recommended and just seemed sturdier. I don't use it daily, so it doesn't exactly take a beating, but it's perfect for my small kitchen and occasional needs. I think I paid $40-$50 for it, either at Bed Bath & Beyond or Kohl's.

I also have a KitchenAid and it's going strong after at least 10 years. Very sturdy, very user-friendly. Love it.

My 7-speed KitchenAid is great. I got it by spending accumulated credit card rewards points!

I have the 3-speed Kitchen Aid handmixer, but am on my 2nd one. One of the tines on one of the mixer blades (what ARE they called? drawing a blank just now) came free from the stem. I used it that way for a while, then got another whole mixer. Now it's happened again. I do use this mixer fairly regularly, for normal things (I'm not mixing cement, that is) and am annoyed that for all its good reviews it's done this again.

Hopefully this won't happen to you, but the mixer is otherwise decent.

Kitchen Aid

@moibec - I have the same Kitchenaid hand mixer and this has happened to mine as well. I am still using it at this point (I don't use it very often) but had planned to replace it eventually with the same one...perhaps I will rethink that now. Thanks.

I have a Black and Decker which I purchased when I first got married (20 years this December). This baby has taken quite a beating over the years. My 10 year old has been using it about 2x a week for almost a year now.
We got her a COOKS so she could have her own. I was impressed with this one as it came with dough hooks. We'll see how it works out.

I have been using my moms kitchen aid hand mixer, the thing is 20+ years old and still doing great. I would suggest looking at a garage sale or ebay for an old KA mixer. They probably don't make them like they use to.

I'll have to go with some of the others on this one... I've had a Kitchen Aid hand mixer since college (about 14 years) and it still works great. It's a 5 speed.

All I have to add is DON'T get a Sunbeam. Take it from me...

I rely on my dinky Braun Multimix that's one motor and three attachments for a hand mixer, food processor, and stick blender. Had one for five years and when it gave out three years ago I got another one of the same, which is still going strong. Costs maybe $40.

@mollykate678 - Mine was a Sunbeam... I guess I'm not the only one with problems with it.

Thanks for all the feedback. I think I'm pretty settled on a KitchenAid. Now to pick out the pretty color...

I've been happy with the Kitchenaid after burning out a cheap one...or two. And it's not like I'm doing anything insane with them, considering I have a stand mixer for the hard labor.

And if you go on the KA website, they've usually got sales and refurbs for cheap. That's where I got mine. Fewer color choices, but it stores in a drawer, so it's not like the color was a big deal to me.
