I bought Kefir! Now what...?

I've wanted to try Kefir for a while, but it's so expensive, so I kept putting it off. (I know you can make your own, but I didn't want to get cultures until I know for sure I could use it as quickly as I was making it.) However, today I had a coupon, so now I have a quart of Kefir in the fridge! It's the original flavor, so I'm free to do as I please with it without having to worry about strange flavorings. So far, I've mixed some up with some fresh fruit and whey protein and made a smoothie. It was tasty, so I wouldn't mind using it for more smoothies, but I was wondering if there was something else worth trying? I have some Kashi GoLean Crunch that I think it will go well with, but that's not so much a recipe as me dumping liquid-y yogurt on my cereal. Any other ideas? Thanks guys!

I had to look this stuff up, having never heard of it.

I wonder what other nifty food items have been hiding behind the iron curtain. I found Russian tomatoes to be a surprise, what else may appear?

I like the strawberry kefir. I basically just treat it as a yogurt drink. You can probably blend it with some fresh fruit for breakfast.

I used some in place of buttermilk to make biscuits.

I usually eat it with fruit and honey. You could make frozen yogurt with it. I haven't tried that yet.

I love Strawberry kefir. ! I add some honey and ice on the blender and it taste delicious!

Make raïta to go with lamb kebabs, koftas, grilled salmon or steak, roast chicken or with a gazpacho. It's an ideal summer side dish / sauce.

Mix it in the blender with raspberries or boysenberries and a hit of agave syrup. Strain and drink.

I really like drinking it plain! I don't drink regular milk, but I love yogurt so this was something in the middle. It is a great substitute on cereal, again for something thicker than milk but thinner than yogurt. Other than that, I second all the smoothie ideas!

It really is the best smoohie base. Try mixing it with frozen mango, a touch of honey, and a smidge of cardamom.

enjoy the health benefits of it .... i love it with fruit....

I just drink the strawberry straight from the container. I thought that's what most people did. The plain would be nice though, in pancake or waffle batter. Or continue making smoothies.

It is about the same price as yogurt at Trader Joe's. They carry plain and strawberry. We drink them.

Thanks guys! I ate some over my cereal, used a little to dip some strawberries in, and I think I'm going to use the rest as Simon suggested over salmon. Some other good ideas here...I'm definitely going to buy some more (probably the strawberry kind, since everyone seems to like it) and experiment with it.

There are actually lots of different things you can do with kefir. We've got some recipes here: http://www.lifeway.net/bottom/recipes.php Also we've heard that some people use it to make salad dressings which is especially helpful for the folks that have celiac disease. We're told that it's hard to find a gluten-free dressing.

I use it in smoothies, just like any other yogurt product.

I have also used it to reheat macaroni and cheese on the stovetop... I have been living without a microwave oven for the last 7 months.

I am sure you can use it just like yogurt or buttermilk in any recipe...
