Do you like cooking to music?
Maybe a little opera while you're makin' de pasta?
Or does music make you crazy when you're cooking?
I have to be in the mood for music, personally, I like to be present with my thoughts while I'm cooking.... very zen.

when cooking alone, sometimes I like music sometimes not. If I'm cooking with SO we love to have music going, oldies and some country, it always seems like a celebration when we cook together and music makes it more so.

I don't usually listen to music while I cook, but I do hum. Tonelessly and endlessly. Usually I get a few bars of a song stuck in my head and I hum it over and over. I don't know that I'm doing it, and it's not as bad when I'm alone in the kitchen as when I worked in a cubicle farm. The woman next to me would leap, roaring, over the divider between our cubes and would threaten me with major bodily harm. At least in the kitchen I have weapons for my defense.

I prefer silence while I'm baking.

Quite a few people here cook to music...

Looks like I haven't changed much in 7 months...when I do cook, I still listen to the same stuff.
Cassaendra at 9:13PM on 05/30/09
I sing and rock out when I am cooking, whether or not the stereo is on. Sometimes I even make up lyrics to go with what I am doing.
But then, I used to be a singer/performer, so that might explain some of it.
Cheers,

It depends on the situation for me. If I am not in a hurry, I love listening to some music while cooking, especially some Amy Winehouse (shes the best)
If I am in a hurry or need to really focus on getting the food on the plate and to the table, I definitely turn the music down or off.
sousvide at 10:35PM on 05/30/09
Music? Absolutely....No question about it. My kitchen is a great escape and music helps achieve that special nirvana. For the quick . "lets get it over with" dinner maybe not. But for big meals (like Thanksgiving and the Holidays) or creative culinary constructions the music is the vehicle to get in touch with my ingredients, techniques and utensils. Rock on!
thegoch at 10:47PM on 05/30/09
Well...Saturdays at 3pm have become our Grateful Dead hour, (our local, NPR station) so I'm usually making pizza dough and free falling-improv for Sunday's dinner. They hit the mood for Saturday afternoon and we don't have as much of the Dead in our collection as we should.
We have a Chess Blues collection that is really terrific, particularly when you're doing grunt work, be it kitchen or yard, just hits the right tones and mood.
Radio Paradise, an online site is a great eclectic site to listen to. And well, when you have 1000+ cd's arranged by artist, it's nice to have someone else do the mixing. Lord knows the hassel that will come this summer when I sit down and add all the kids' cd's they've bought over the last 6 months.
But to the original comment...sometimes I love cooking to music...other times just give me the sound of my knife.
dhorst at 11:01PM on 05/30/09
I try to listen to music whenever I cook, but sometimes I'm so rushed I can't really enjoy the experience.
Actually, the last time someone brought up this topic (it may have been me, actually) one Serious Eater mentioned that they listened to This American Life. I usually listen to punk or rock or alternative whatever, but I thought that was the GREATEST idea I'd ever heard because I love This American Life and it hadn't occured to me to listen to episodes while cooking. That's what I've been doing ever since. It's a really fun time in my kitchen.
PumpkinBear at 11:22PM on 05/30/09
Yes..I have this great CD of Italian classics that my cousin downloaded for me -an eclectic mix too--some of the songs are from movies, some fun, some campy, some serious-it's all good--- ranging to rock ....Aerosmith, Led Zep, The Doors, Cream etc etc to Southern Rock-Skynyrd, Allman Brothers etc...whatever inspires me that day I guess..
Italiancupcake at 7:54AM on 05/31/09
I love cooking to music when I'm in the kitchen just playing around or making a time-consuming recipe/menu. However if I'm just trying to throw together a quick meal, I don't usually bother. When I do have the time, the play list is all over the place - anything from classical to opera to Rat Pack standards to oldies to country to gospel and everything in between. And yes, I will also admit to using a spatula or a long-handled spoon as a microphone while dancing around my kitchen (don't judge, you know you do it too!). I also love sports, so it's not uncommon for me to have a game on in the background as well. Just gotta be careful when doing either of the above-mentioned things because they definitely can be a bit distracting - next thing you know, the song is over or overtime has ended...and meanwhile your water's boiled over and your cookies are burnt to a crisp! :)
kimberlymac at 9:29AM on 05/31/09
Sure! But since I screwed up a basic bread recipe last night cause I didn't read the recipe right I probably don't need ANY distractions while I bake.
arm1970 at 9:55AM on 05/31/09
Whenever I spend time in the kitchen, whether it's preparing food, doing dishes, or even putting away groceries, I MUST have the radio on.
And it has to be CBC Radio 1. Canadian public radio at its finest. Commercial-free, and its programmes centre around regional talk shows and interviews, the arts, news, and current affairs pieces. I guess similar to what NPR is for you. Repetitive chopping tasks go well with news radio for me.
Basically, I enjoy cooking whilst listening to enthusiastic strangers having interesting conversations about things (ha, maybe why I love this place so much :))
conky at 11:32AM on 05/31/09
Pristine silence for me. I have to have quiet in the kitchen. I HATE other people in the kitchen, especially one friend who chatters constantly and will take two hours to grate carrots because she stops what she is doing every time she tells a story! Kids under foot, the "bar" my OH makes in the kitchen when we have a crowd, the stinking hum of the oven fan (that drives me INSANE!) I would never dream of listening to music or a radio - I guess that all sounds strange, but that is how I do my best work. It is like my brain works on one thing - getting the food on the table.
bareneed at 12:51PM on 05/31/09
Definitely the CBC - ''As It Happens'' is definitely the best for cooking.
Or "Red Hot Disco Express" - on red vinyl no less!
PeanutButter at 1:00PM on 05/31/09
I used to spin some vinyl everytime I was in the kitchen...mostly jazz...that and a glass of wine would put me in the perfect mood to create.
Nowadays it seems like I'm always trying to cook while watching some type of sporting event...maybe thats why I seem to be low on creativity lately.
Maybe its time to revisit some of those old records.
brickh at 5:04PM on 05/31/09
if there is music, i like to sing and dance... so not for baking or proofing... otherwise its something to do when stirring.
blizcheetah at 5:33PM on 05/31/09
When I lived alone for a while I decided to buy a record player for my kitchen. I listen to it occasionally, I have a collection of stuff I wouldn't otherwise buy like Herb Alpert, Blue Oyster Cult, Cat Stevens, Amy Winehouse...groovy cooking music. I also have a playlist on my mp3 player of lots of my favorite music and when I'm baking I stick the player in my apron pocket.
VerySmallAnna at 10:24PM on 05/31/09
I usually watch/listen to tv while I'm cooking. My kitchen has a little window above the sink that has a perfect view of the tv in the living room, so I just have that on for entertainment. Usually, it's either an episode of Law & Order (any of them) or anything on Investigation Discovery (my new favorite channel). Somehow, crime solving and murder mysteries get my knife skills going...
meem21 at 10:06AM on 06/01/09
Absolutely! I love turning on the tunes and singing with my spoon! I was flipping through the cable music the other day and found some "Throwback Jamz" from the 90's - I was singing all the songs from my 'teenhood. Loved it!
Sometimes it's country or jazz, sometimes it's the record player, it all depends on what I'm cooking.
TaraTot at 11:04AM on 06/02/09
I love music anytime, definitely while cooking.
Karee at 12:11PM on 06/02/09
Music is a must for when I cook and bake. I always put my laptop on the counter beside me (with a piece of plastic wrap over it for protection) and blast whatever I'm in the mood for. I've only tried cooking/baking a few times without music, mostly because I tend to mess something up or stress out. I especially love having music playing while I'm entertaining in the kitchen. I think it puts everyone at ease (along with a nice glass of wine).
sfuller84 at 12:35PM on 06/02/09
My favorite thing to do is put on some Ella, Billy, Frank etc. and spend the day in my kitchen doing my thing. For some reason jazz speaks to the cooking and baking part of my soul. Unless it's Christmas time, in that case bring on the holiday tunes!
Martini Me at 12:50PM on 06/02/09
Music is an integral part of almost any activity I am involved in, and cooking is no exception.
I find that solid tempo music is the best. No dramatic lulls in tempo to slow down, nor balls out ferocity to overwhelm.
On the rock side I find most Rush, Ac/Dc, Clutch or even Alice in Chains to be fitting.
On the Metallic side of things, Candlemass, Blind Guardian, Manowar, or early Sabbath.
The pinnacle of house cleaning/cooking music? Van Halen's 1. Outrageously suitable. Never leaves my player for very long.
Carnal at 2:14PM on 06/02/09
Sometimes I'll put the radio on when I'm cooking, but usually I like to turn the Food Network on - except be careful you don't stop following your recipe and start following Giada! Could end up with a Rachel on Friends like dish: trifle with beef!

totally depends on my mood. either silence or blasting the music. though it has to be a playlist or album i can listen to all the way through -- i hate having to stop what i'm doing and walk across the room to change the song!
megannesta at 6:11PM on 06/02/09
On Sundays, when I am cooking my big meals for the week, I have to have music to keep me company. Often, it's the local adult-contemporary station (which features 80s hits that I can sing along to), but if I want commercial-free music, it is either classical (kid you not, Carl Orff's great chorale, Carmina Burana, is excellent music to cook by), or Enya (especially her 2nd album, Watermark).
studyzone at 8:32PM on 06/02/09
I cook/bake to music 90% of the time, it provides some companionship and background noise :)
velascomike at 9:07PM on 06/02/09
Yes, often music is my companion while I'm playing in the kitchen. Either that or the tv--has been food network, of course--but I like little bit of something extra in the background.
the music itself of course depends on my mood. I always feel great to be bouncing around to my classic rock, with a glass of vino, energetically creating something fantastic. ( when I'm feeling really, really good does this happen)
emilytaylor at 10:38PM on 06/02/09
@studyzone-- Carmina Burana is the greatest!!! The version with Robert Shaw conducting is permanently tattooed on my brain, I've listened to it so many times. The only suitable thing one could cook to such music is a giant explosive flambe' of some sort.... ??
I can't listen to music while cooking--my brain just can't do the two things simultaneously. I listen to TV reruns or movies I have watched a zillion times already so I don't have to actually watch what's going on, I just listen. I Tivo a certain (embarrassing) sitcom and play that back almost every day. Also, can't cook in silence.
carhoff at 1:06AM on 06/03/09
Barry White has the absolute best beat for kneading bread dough!
Mirjam at 4:15AM on 06/03/09
I'm a Mexican, I must.
ArchieLeach at 8:58AM on 06/03/09
I'm with the TV brigade...must have it on in the kitchen at all times. Don't have cable in the kitchen so I usually watch Create on PBS all day.
bessfour at 10:36AM on 06/03/09
I have watched TV while cooking but don't have control over the downstairs TV much of the day now so I prefer my mp3 player. I find the Food Network just annoys me too much during the daytime so I go for the Travel Channel - they have better food-centric shows anyway.
I almost forgot that I used to listen to stand up comedy CDs a lot when I lived with my parents. A really fun way to spend an evening is baking cookies while laughing at one of your favorite comics.
VerySmallAnna at 11:47AM on 06/03/09
I find few things more enjoyable than doing my holiday baking while listening to the Charlie Brown Christmas album.
eeels at 12:09PM on 06/03/09
If it is a day long cooking thing, I have classical on. If we are cooking together in the evening there will be mojitos or caiprainas and cuban or south american music.
ocarol at 12:10PM on 06/03/09
In general, I flow better when listening to music. I've found that my cooking and baking is better when it's on. Everyone is wired differently, so there's no single "correct" way here.
I love listening to KCRW's streaming "Morning Becomes Eclectic" show or I'll flip-on some DirecTV and listen to the music channels (XMU, Jazz & Blues, Rock en Español, Salsa). It depends on what I'm making.
Susquehanna at 2:29PM on 06/03/09
Salsa / latino music while cooking RULES!
hungrychristel at 5:54PM on 06/04/09
Heck I'll cook to most anything, but if there's some Bob Marley on or Red Hot Chili Peppers going on the Sirius them I'm good. I agree with the zen comment at the beginning, if I'm in a zone then most any music will do, I'll even cook to some Metallica if I'm feeling it.
dozertx at 11:05AM on 06/05/09
I'm a pretty big music fan, and usually have the headphones going while I am on the subway, walking in the neighborhood, shopping... But when I cook, I actually like complete silence. However, I love the background noise of the city as I prepare meals – sirens, cars driving through rain, kids out from school, neighbors walking up and down the stairs, etc. I find it fills my head just enough.
JustNancy at 4:53PM on 06/05/09
Vivaldi, Jay-Z, Jurrasic 5, Afro Cuban All Stars & Orin Lavine. (Or if I'm in a certain mood an my wife is gone, The Ricky Gervais Show.
Montana Eats at 11:22PM on 06/06/09
I like to listen to Van Morrison when I cook. Both activities seem spiritual and connected for some reason. I agree though that silence when baking is essential. Concentrate.
msmoren at 8:55AM on 06/07/09
I put on the MusicChoice 90s Channel on my Comcast Cable! I'm serious! My friends make fun of me so much, but it's like my teen years being broadcast while I cook. I dance and sing--it makes cooking that much more enjoyable when you are singing Montell Jordan.
inothernews at 6:48PM on 06/07/09
Yes I do. Especially Z.Z.Top. It gets me in the mood for the T.V. I am going to eat.
chardonnay at 7:01PM on 06/07/09
My parents' kitchen is only separated from the family room by a counter, so I usually pop a musical in the DVD player. The breaks between musical numbers allow me to give my undivided attention periodically to whatever I'm doing (and the music, in turn, gives me a chance to take my mind off the details of my cooking for a bit).
papagena665 at 10:09AM on 06/09/09
If Wheel of Fortune isn't on in the background, I will usually listen to music.... my friend even has a playlist on her ipod called "Salmon" -- more here: http://dishthisboston.blogspot.com/2009/04/cooking-music-salmon-playlist.html
DishGal at 1:12PM on 06/09/09
I can't cook without it! I stress a little in the kitchen (was that baking powder or baking soda?), so most of our meals are flavored with Miles Davis's "Kind of Blue" album.
Suzan Colon at 2:53PM on 06/09/09
I love cooking with music in the background. Especially when I'm in the prep stage. It's nice to get a good rhythm going.
muki89 at 6:14PM on 06/09/09
Gotta be electronica when I'm prepping. During the actual cooking I never pay any attention so anything could be playing.
jareddee at 7:04PM on 06/09/09
I like to cook in complete silence.
shhhhhhhh
Stacey Snacks at 3:47PM on 06/10/09
At the dinner hour, while cooking and the kids are winding down, I put on dinner jazz, like Art Tatum, Oscar Peterson, that sort of thing. Great background, doesn't get in my head too much to distract me.
A great band to cook to is Clem Snide. Mellow-ish, engaging but not distracting in a big way.
Music is a must.
