Dinner in Grand Rapids???
We will be in Michigan in a month and would like to take various family members and old friends out for dinner (probably 3 different occasions). If we leave it up to them, they will undoubtedly suggest the same restaurant as always I first went there some weeks after we were married 40 years ago today (I'm quite giddy with delight at the great run it's been but not so happy about the prospect of more meals there!). There has got to be some place that reflects all the wonderful things that have happened to food and restaurants since 1969. Serious Eaters - can you help me?

What price range are you looking at? Mid-range or so?
I have not been to Grand Rapids in awhile, so I am sure others will have some better suggestions, but I liked these when I was there.
*Louis Benton Steakhouse--I did not have steak there, but the food I did have was good.
*Reds on the River--I think that was pretty standard American. Good though.
*Noto's and Tre Cugini were good for Italian. I can't remember which, but one had an AMAZING salad.
Good luck! What is the name of the restaurant you had been going to for 40 years? I know MI has a couple of places/chains that have been around for a very long time, but I can't think of the one your statement brings to mind for me.

XO downtown has great range of southeastern oriental food in a highr class setting with breaking the wallet
across the street is a great sushi place that I am unsure of the name, but my BF and I got there for most important ocassions
Russ's, a lot of older people eat there, but they have great home cooking. Their meatloaf is great and they have a decent clam chowder on Friday and Saturdays. There's one on 28th st
Brandywine on Lake Dr. one of my favorite finds they are a breafast lunch place so they close early, but they do it right. They have great sweet potato pancakes and make their hollandaise from scratch.
And if I remember correctly there is a Jamacian place on cherry or weathly I wanna say its called Jamacian Dave's but I'm not sure, this one is on my list of yet to try
I do not which street, but the Ritz Coney has great hot dogs and is across from the Van Andel arena.
I am up there rather frequently both my father and BF live in the area, I am actually going up this weekend and can't wait!

For seafood: Leo's, named Restaurant of the Year by Grand Rapids Magazine. www.leosrestaurant.com. Side note: While Leo's is considered fine dining, the restaurant is carpeted. This is a blessing to older folks who may wear a hearing aid.
Newest sensation: The Green Well. Gastro Pub. www.thegreenwell.com.
Incredible authentic Lebanese fare: Marie Catrib's. Great lunch place, no liquor license.
I second the Red's on the River (in Rockford) and Tre Cugini. Both places have outside dining for maximum dining delight. Red's for the scenic river experience and Tre Cugini for the city experience.
The six.one.six at the new JW Marriott downtown is fabulous, and the prices aren't nearly as horrific as one might think a high-end hotel restaurant might be.
Rose's on Reed's Lake and Bistro Bela Vita never disappoint.
ANd of course, if money is no object: The 1913 Room. Could this be the restaurant you refer to in your post that's been there forever?

Thanks so much for all the suggestions! We should be able to make everyone happy, including ourselves, There will be people of all ages and tastes (none with hearing aids as far as I know!). And you've given us lots of choices. If anyone else has a strong opinion or preference, please let us know. Almost everything we eat, at home or out, comes straight from the farm: vegetables, herbs, meat, poultry, eggs, and much of the fruit. So we're spoilt; I think it's possible to eat that way most everywhere if you ask the right people!!!

I've been in GR for 4 years or so.
I'd put a second vote in for Rose's. If you like Japanese food the Tokyo Grill has a nice atmosphere and good food. The Grand Rapids Brewery is also a favorite of my family.
