Coke Light > Diet Coke. Where can I get some?
Went to Cancun over Memorial Day weekend. Rather than drinking myself into a stupor, I decided to indulge in my love of delicious Coke (with real sugar!) And it was goooood.
Then I had a Coke Light. I fell head over heels over it. I want some more. I crave it. I tried Diet Coke and spat it right back out because, eew. Gross.
Why is (Mexican) Coke Light a million times better than (US)Diet Coke? I checked the label and Coke Light uses aspertame. Is it a special kind of aspertame laced with crack? And where the hell can I get some in the DC/NOVA area? Coke Light, not crack.

Here's a line from wiki:
In other countries, in which cyclamates are not banned (as they were in the U.S. and the United Kingdom in 1970), Diet Coke or Coca-Cola Light may be sweetened with a blend containing cyclamates, aspartame, and acesulfame potassium.
So maybe the sweetners used are slightly different down there? Personally I didn't taste a difference when I had coke light in South/Central america or asia, but maybe I just don't remember it all that well lol.

We get our Mexican Coke products at Sam's Club by the case... Fell in love with it on the honeymoon and have been buying it since.

Those little Coke Light bottles they serve in Europe are heaven. I'm not sure what the exact difference is or if it's just in my head... I would love to find a good supply somewhere in NY to see if I really can taste the difference when I'm on my home turf.

I want to know what the difference between Coke Zero and Diet Coke is. Coke Light intrigues me.

ag3208 - I think (U.S.) Coke Zero uses Splenda as a sweetener, and (U.S.) Diet Coke uses Nutrasweet (or a Nutrasweet/saccharin mix). I hate them both. Coke Zero is, oddly enough, too sweet (with a bitter finish). Diet Coke has this weird chemical/metallic taste to it no matter how cold you drink it.
Coke Light, on the other hand, tastes so much like regular coke. You only notice the fake sugar if you drink it lukewarm. But served over ice? AMAZING. I'd drink this everyday if I could.

Love coke light!
I was madly in love with C2 until is was discontinued (C2 was a wonderful blend of Coke and Diet Coke). Coke Zero takes similar but not as good.

In some places overseas Coke Light is all you can get. They switched over in Singapore about seven years ago. The Diet Coke fans were reduced to buying it from the Navy base if they could, or getting a friend to do it if they couldn't. Personally I think Coke Light is much the better product. I find it less cloying than Diet Coke. But now I am back in the USA. Diet Pepsi is a better bet than Diet Coke (I think)

lorelei76, coke zero doesn't have splenda in it. it's just a fancy marketing scheme so men don't have to feel wimpy when they drink diet soda:
"Coke Zero and Diet Coke are actually very similar. Both are low calorie drinks and have exactly the same ingredients – carbonated purified water, colour (caramel 150d), food acids (338 and 331), flavour, artificial sweeteners aspartame (951) and acesulphame potassium (950), preservative (211) and caffeine. The key difference between the two drinks is in the proportions of these ingredients, giving each has a slightly different flavour profile."

I have a friend that works for Coke, and he says their exploring the market for imported Cokes. For instance, have you ever had regular Coke in south or central america? It tastes slightly different. It can be from the water, from the types of bottles (yay glass!) or other variations.
I imagine something similar is going on with Coke Light. The original reason for the different name was that the word "diet" has a differen meaning in some languages and wasn't considered appropriate in many non-English speaking countries.
You know, historically bottlers have been independently owned separate from Coca-Cola itself. I THINK this may have changed recently, but the point is that slight variations could be from this factor as well.
