Where to Eat?

I have two friends and their husbands coming in from out of town to NYC and we want to eat out. Since I'm a mom I don't get out much anymore and when I do I always seem to end up at Little Giant on Orchard Street. I want to try something new (especially since I am springing for a sitter).

What restaurant would you recommend for a group of six that is not too expensive (we're artist types with at least one unemployed husband) that has great food and is downtown-ish.

Thanks!

Went to this restaurant in the East Village a couple of months ago and have been dying to go back ever since then, Le Pere Pinard: http://www.leperepinard.com/

Reasonably priced, very authentic (everyone speaks French!), wooden interior, communal tables in the back, lively bar scene w/smaller tables up front.

I really like this restaurant Le Singe Vert. It's also a French bistro, very authentic, fully of artsy types and French people. The food is good, not too expensive (entrees are in the range of $16 and $25), they have a good wine selection, and it's got a laid back, festive vibe. You can just take your time with your dinner and relax. I've been a bunch of times with groups and have always enjoyed myself.

I totally suggest 'Ino, Gottino, or Kuma Inn.

'ino is way too small for a group of six without a wait. Even then, it's kinda cramped.

In the spirit of Little Giant, you might try Cafe Cluny in the West Village.

Public is always lively and good (great drinks and you can pop into the Monday Room).

And a random sampling of modestly-priced but good and fun restaurants: Pylos, Aurora Soho, Bread, Freemans.

Or a little pricier but excellent food: 10 Downing, Market Table.

Have fun!

Soho has a bunch of great eats! Just check out my blog: http://munchimonster.wordpress.com/2009/04/11/dessert-day/
