What Do You Think Of Boiled Peanuts?
I suppose many folks above the Mason-Dixon line have never tried them but they are extremely popular and sold at ball parks, country stores and on roadsides throughout the south.

love them a lot! I'm from the South as well, but on the Coast, so I didn't grow up with ubiquitous boiled peanuts; we had them sporadically, though-- special stops here and there, perhaps. Very delicious they are.

I don't like them. Never did.

It is the first purchase I make every time I visit my dad in Florida! LOVE them.

I came to know and love boiled peanuts when we moved to the south (eastern NC) almost 40 years ago. You have to start with green peanuts and back then a lot of people grew peanuts so boiled peanut season was early autumn. There's no way to describe what they taste like--but they are delicious and addictive--salty, soggy and luscious. You literally end up "up to your elbows" in them, because the salty water squishes out when you pop them open and runs up your arms when you take them to your mouth! You used to be able to find green peanuts in local stores and make your own--they're harder to find now, but yes indeed if you're lucky you can still find them, usually at roadside stands in rural areas.

Food of the gods! When the green peanuts come into season, I boil tons of them! They freeze well in their brine, and will keep for a year if well frozen. I put them in small quantities in quart zip-loc freezer bags with brine, squeezing all the air out of the bags. I make mine with just salt and water, but some folks add hot peppers and/or other spices to them.

My dad's family is from the South and he introduced me to them. One year he ordered a whole case and had it mailed to Rhode Island, the delivery guy must have thought we were weird. But yeah, they're awesome.

I've lived in alabama for 18 yrs and only tried them twice, not a fan sorry. I keep remembering a scene in a book i read once that described eating grashoppers as rather like eating boiled peanuts with crunchy legs. Just cant get past that imagery

I love boiled peanuts...but I don't know what kind of bread to eat with them?
onepercent99 at 11:29AM on 04/14/09

I'm from Taiwan and boiled peanuts were always part of the condiments and snacks for our family. I love them now, but as a kid I hated them. I've never tried them in the South..gotta add that to the list =)

@tinat -
I was just going to add that boiled peanuts are not only popular in the South but also in Asia. I remember them as a ubiquitous part of the rice congee breakfasts my grandma would prepare for us, along with steamed vegetables, you tiao, pork floss etc... Her house always had some in a bowl somewhere.

I tried them during my one and only visit to the south, bought them from the side of the rode near Biloxi. I thought they were disgusting. Kinda tasted like pinto beans (which I love), but if you are going to eat peanuts, they should taste like peanuts and be crunchy, not soggy. Sorry.

i grew up in South Carolina, and my whole family loves boiled peanuts! they are soft and sweet and salty! yum. we used to buy them from roadside farmers markets. so good. i miss them in the north :( has anyone tried making them at home? i would be interested to know how long you boil them and how much salt to add.
@onepercent99 - I've never heard of eating them with bread. we eat them plain.
nithya at hungrydesi at 12:20PM on 04/14/09
I suspect that if one had known only boiled peanuts and was suddenly introduced to the roasted, crunchy kind, one would think it a vast improvement.
Lorenzo at 1:06PM on 04/14/09
It's not bad at all. That's the only kind of peanuts in a shell you could get in Hawaii when I grew up. Roasted peanuts in a shell were nonexistent.
Cassaendra at 1:28PM on 04/14/09
Boiled peanuts are awesome esp. cajun style! Reminds me of roadtrips from Birmingham to Panama City (the redneck riviera or as some know it, L.A.= Lower Alabama)
Pavlov at 1:33PM on 04/14/09
Not for me thank you. I much prefer roasted peanuts.
dhorst at 1:48PM on 04/14/09
@nithya....i was just being a little sarcastic here...lol....the original poster also has another post where they're telling us what kind of bread to eat with what meat.I've made boiled peanuts at home before.Get you some green pnuts in the shell, put them in a large pot with salted water.
as for how much salt you use, just make the water kinda salty, andcook the peanuts at a slow boil till tender.
probably about 2 hours, adding more water or salt as needed.
onepercent99 at 2:25PM on 04/14/09
i don't like them or the smell.
dearrie at 4:58PM on 04/14/09
I always thought boiled peanuts were an Asian thing, but if they're southern, that's cool too. I haven't had them in a while, but I like them.
runnereater at 7:14PM on 04/14/09
They suck!
dmcavanagh at 7:44PM on 04/14/09
I hate them. Nuts should be crunchy - not mushy. Enough said!
Ribster at 4:48AM on 04/15/09
When my husband and I started to make yearly trips to South Carolina from Canada, we were eager to try all the different and delicious regional foods - we were so thrilled when we found a boiled peanut stand and we bought a big bag and, WOW, it must be a Southern thing alright, because we were not impressed! It is about the only thing we haven't liked, though.
bareneed at 10:06AM on 04/15/09
I like them! I've only had them in Malaysia. My uncle gave me a giant soggy plastic bag full of them. I didn't plan on actually eating them, but I got hungry in my hotel room. Half a bag later, my husband had to hide them in the mini bar so I didn't eat them all.
meHUNGRY at 12:19PM on 04/16/09
oh the soft mushy peanuts, eh, no thanks.
