What's not to like? A few capers and a bit of red onion is all she is lacking.

Shocking she discovered cream and butter, now this. Waiting for the space time continuum to adjust for ludicrous speed.
JerzeeTomato at 2:18PM on 04/08/09
Welcome aboard, what took you so long?
pjracz10 at 4:03PM on 04/08/09
what a moron.
dmarina at 7:54PM on 04/08/09
@dmarina: Does not tasting lox until you are an adult REALLY constitute being a "moron"? Comments like yours are useless, hurtful, and stupid.
producestories at 8:26PM on 04/08/09
i second that.
dearrie at 8:56PM on 04/08/09
Haha, that's awesome. It's also making me hungry for bagels and lox. But is it just me, or do the bagels look a little bread-y inside? (Not that bagels aren't bread, but the texture doesn't look quite right for some reason...)
cycorider at 9:59PM on 04/08/09
I'll third that, @producestories. If it does though, then I too would be a moron considering I didn't like and/or hadn't tried the following until past childhood/adolescence: asparagus, eggplant, artichokes, raw tomatoes, lox, and horseradish, among other things.
joyyy at 10:19PM on 04/08/09
i would NEVER have posted this if i had any idea that it would incite such a negative response, @dmarina. i have tons of respect for ree, who has made a huge success of her blog because she is such a talented writer. she grew up in oklahoma, so i'm not surprised she hadn't tasted bagels and lox. since i grew up eating it all the time, i thought it was funny and adorable that she came to it so late in life, and with such passion.
cybercita at 2:49AM on 04/09/09
I am in Oklahoma, and I eat lox and bagels quite a bit! But then, I'm a real foodie and probably in the minority with much of what I eat.
gourmetgal at 2:57AM on 04/09/09
Given that she said in her post that she doesn't like salmon, it's not surprising she hasn't tried the combination until now.
I didn't think the bagels looked bready--they looked dense, not fluffy like bad inner tube bagels. I like curled and angry bagels like that.
And yes, I know they have bagels in OK, but it can be harder to find good ones outside of the NY/NJ area.
HeartofGlass at 6:08AM on 04/09/09
Curled and angry bagels are the best @HeartofGlass. I love Ree and have been reading her for a while. I make her mashed potatoes w/creamcheese all time time. Thanks for posting the article @cybercita, it really was cute.
chisai at 4:10PM on 04/09/09
A moron? Reallllly...............I say better late than never. There are ALOT of things I haven't tried yet. Don't think of myself as a moron just late to the party. Welcome Ree!!
finsbigfan at 5:23PM on 04/09/09
@chisai--perhaps that is why bagels are so good in the NY and NJ area--we channel all of our anger into our bagels! Angry good food is NJ/NY food--pizza, bagels, bread grr!
HeartofGlass at 5:32PM on 04/09/09
the rest of my comment didn't post. not that it would make it any better to the ree-lovers here :)
" And while I’m generally an adventurous eater, I draw the line when it comes to things that could potentially give me food poisoning and make me barf, not because I fear for my health or worry about permanent damage but because…well…I hate throwing up. "
i don't understand why lox would make you throw up any more than the sushi she loves.
"Though I visited Chicago, New York, and other major metropolitan locations, my eating followed my normal patterns: pasta, tapas, sushi, tapas, pasta. Sushi. Pasta. Tapas."
what about breakfast or brunch?
i just don't find her charming or adorable. sorry!
dmarina at 1:45PM on 04/10/09
@dmarina - at least now I know I'm not the only one whose posts get clipped sometimes!
as to lox vs. sushi - there is a difference in taste. I usually order a sashimi platter when I get sushi, and one time I forgot to ask them to not include smoked salmon. I decided it was worth giving a try since it was on the plate, but with the context of sushi in my mind, the tast of smoked salmon actually made me gag a little.
joyyy at 2:48PM on 04/10/09
I think it's adorable. Maybe because it's a staple of Jewish eating and she's discovering it for the first time. But tell me, why the naysayers?

Chew on That at 4:06PM on 04/10/09
@ Hillary....its called jealousy. The woman lives in the sticks of OK, has an insanely huge farm, guest lodge, a shitload of cattle and whatnot plus 4 kids, a hot husband, a billion ranch hands and an extremely successful blog. Not to mention, the girls that brought her the lox and bagels from NY are her BOOK EDITORS. She may not have the snazziest recipes in the universe, yes she talks about boogers and puke, calfs nuts and manure, but put it where it is. The chick has it going on. Her photography action sets ain't half bad either.
Get over yourselves...unless, of course, you would like to post a link to YOUR food blog where you were nominated and won bloggie of the year? Exactly.
ChelleyD01 at 1:47PM on 04/11/09
I was well into my 19th year before I had my first bagel. What can I say? I come from a fairly provincial background, especially in terms of food. Since I've gone on to make my own bagels and now regularly improvise stir fries and whip up gnocchi and ghormeh sabzi, I think I've more than overcome my cultural deprivations.
HakunaFritatta at 1:56PM on 04/11/09
@Chelley: precisely. Naysayers blogs/websites tend to be very different....which is cool, but they sure wouldn't be my cup of tea. What matters is, they don't have to please me and I don't have to go there.
Cary at 2:35PM on 04/11/09
Oh ChelleyD01, I so disagree with you on this, girl! I resent the notion that if I, God forbid, do not find someone charming and likable, I must be jealous of him or her! Do you like everybody? And if you don't like someone, is it because you're jealous of them? For the record, as someone born and raised in a large city, I would kill myself at once if I had to live on a farm, no matter how huge and how many kids or cattle I'd have there. And I didn't realise that only people who have their own food blogs are allowed to have opinions of food bloggers and their blogs.
So no, I'm not jealous of her, and I doubt many people who posted here are. I don't hate her or dislike her, I just don't give a damn. But I don't find the fact that she just discovered bagels and lox any more charming or adorable than the fact that my MIL discovered sushi when she was in her 50s. I find it just as unremarkable. Whatever, seriously.
brooke29 at 2:42PM on 04/11/09
I have never consumed lox in my entire adult life and I live 10 minutes from a predominantly Jewish community where bagels roll out like shit does downhill. Apparantly, I should be banned from the human race because of it. I have no intention of ever consuming that garbage either. It is what it is.
@ Brooklyn, your missing my point entirely and you should know that I like very few people as a cumulative whole. I also have never used the words "charming or adorable" in my entire adult life, up to and including referring to my own child. Your making me wanna puke, Brooke. Have a Reese. You will feel much better.
ChelleyD01 at 10:53PM on 04/11/09
@Chelle - I know, that was my point:! You just scared me there for a second, I was afraid it was an impostor or something-)
