Sushi lovers: Why is Sushi so addicting?

Have you found that once you like Sushi you sort of crave it and want to eat it all the time, and if you had a choice to eat it all the time you might do that? I was wondering if you find yourself craving Sushi a lot?

Yes! I totally know what you mean! It is so satisfying. I just wish it didn't make me sick here lately . . . but I usually eat it anyway and suffer the consequences : ( My fav is just about anything with salmon.

Yes, I do crave sushi often. I have this scallop favorite that tastes like the ocean. It is soooo good, I have to admit I daydream about it. As a matter of fact, in the past few years, every time I see raw fish I wonder how it would taste as sushi. I don't, however, sample fish like cookie dough when I cook it

I adore the stuff but unfortunately I had to give it up because of the rice, there are no good sashimi places around me either:-(

I love sushi so much and crave it all the time. I think part of the reason why is because when I eat it, I really slow down and enjoy each piece. I sit and think about each of the flavours and how they work together. It such a special treat for me that I really try to savor it. Could just be a cultural thing too tho.

@huneybumper - Why no rice? Low carbing it? I love me some sushi! I even turned my hubby onto it! We roll our own at home now! LOL

I have never had "real" sushi - just the "California" style with vegetables - I think I am ready to try the real stuff, so, can you make a suggestion for a first timer - I don't want to NOT like it, but I admit to being a bit squeamish about the idea of raw fish - I will not eat fresh tuna, I have an unfortunate adversion to the look of it, but I would like to try something else.

I think its addictive because it hits every taste bud just right, sweet, savory, bitter, salty, spicy, and its an "experience" when you have good sushi, it isnt just going out to dinner, its disney for your mouth.

When I started this job the ladies here all loved sushi. I had had a bad experience once but tried it again and did not like it but in a couple of weeks' time I wanted to try it again and have been hooked ever since. I could do sushi at least once a week...give me a spicy tuna or a crunchy spicy salmon maki any day...MMM Good!

@bareneed I'd start off with some cooked rolls, like smoked salmon or a philly roll. Also tempura or shrimp rolls are good for beginners. And I always found it was much easier to have the rolls "inside out" with the rice on the outside, I've been told this is a North American thing. You'll have to work your way up to sashimi.

@arm I'm not low carbing it at all. I;m trying to gain weight actually. I just cant digest rice because of medical issues.
@sammie spicy tuna is my fav too!!!! Have one for me next time huh ;-)

It's amazing how popular sushi has become in the US. Some popular rolls are back-imported to Japan from the US, like Cal and tempura rolls.
Depending on where you live, it may not worth trying raw fish (like where I am, in St. Louis.)

My personal sushi eating order is to start with mildest neta like white fish, octopus, squid and mollusks, then move onto "blue" type of fish (like sardine, saury, mackerel), then tuna (less fatty to fatty), yellowtail, and finally extra rich neta like sea urchin and salmon roe. Then finish up with cucumber and ume temaki.
Now I'm trying not to eat bluefin because of its sustainability (so sad!), which is very easy to do here. I'm severely seafood-deprived. I want to be in Tsukiji. right now.

I'm a sashimi girl all the way. I do like rolls, but to me sushi is fantastic pieces of raw fish and nothing else (yes, I do know that the word sushi refers to the rice - whatever). I think it's addicting because it's so different from most foods - cool, clean tasting, melts in your mouth when it's good like it should be.

I think I like it because it tastes so fresh- I don't know how to explain it. The ingredients, by themselves, are simple but when they're combined? Yow.

For sure! It's just very light and satisfying and fresh tasting! I wish it wasn't so expensive or I WOULD have it all the time! You should try making your own...that's fun too! Even when you wind up just eating the fish by itself :)

Chew on That

Umami. Totally. It hits every note and more.

Hi, my name is Traveller and I a sushi addict. Anything. I love eel, tuna, salmon, veggie, sashimi, maki, hand rolls. And actually, truth be told, I have a standing order with my local sushi people for the nights when I have grad school. It's my way of treating myself for making through an entire day of work, plus four more hours of class. And it's *so* perfect.

Great. Thanks. Now I crave it right now!!

Definitely... it was my birthday meal last weekend, and the weekend before that, and before that, and before that!

@huneybumper: quinoa sushi?

I don't really crave sushi, but I love raw fish or sashimi. I mean, when I shop at the supermarket for fish, what I buy I eat raw and without rice. The rice ("sushi," that is) is not the draw for me. I haven't been a big fan of cooked fish since discovering sushi and sashimi 25 years ago! The flavor of fish is so much more intense when eaten raw.

Yes, it is *totally* addicting. I remember when my best friend and I first moved to NYC and started ordering sushi, we craved it every single day. We had this running joke where we'd "splurge" and get sushi for a lunch a few times a week. It's not really "splurging" when you do it all the time! :)
