After dinner last night, I gave my FIL some home-made candy, and I gave my MIL a bottle of my home-made vinegar. I had asked MIL beforehand if she wanted some of the vinegar when it was done, and she said she'd be interested in trying it.
So there she is looking at the pretty bottle with homemade vinegar, and she asks what she could use it for. Salad dressing, I suggest. "Just like this?" she asks. No, you mix it with oil. some herbs if you want...
My husband, flommoxed at the fact that his mother has no idea what to do with something as simple as vinegar, asks her if she's never used vinegar. "I use white vinegar for cleaning my windows," she says.
She asks me what I use it for, and I say that I use a lot in dressings, but that I use it in cooking, too. And then I'm trying to think of what I cook that she might also cook. And I'm pretty much stuck. Because, really, she'd never make the things I do, and telling her to add a little vinegar to taste when a dish needs it would be an insane thing to suggest. She doesn't use salt or pepper. Vinegar is a whole realm beyond that.
So...any ideas what really, really simple thing I can suggest for her to use the vinegar?
