Oxymorons

I recently read a post by someone on this site that prompted me to join in order to make my own post.

Carpaccio, by definition, is raw. Hence, "roasted carpaccio" is an oxymoron.

I know I know more - but can only think of two at the moment.
1. diet water.
2. fat free half & half.

chocolatey chips - contain no chocolate (is taht an oxymoron? or is it just misleading marketing? haha)

ordering a "diet" coke with your supersized big mac meal - saw this all the time when I worked there as a youngn I called the "redundant" meal...now that I think about it they could have been diabetic...but stil.

@hungrychristel- I am a redundant meal orderer. I prefer the taste of diet soda (I know I'm in the minority), and if I'm eating something high in calories, why would I want to tack on an additional 600 of them by ordering a regular soda? I cut 'em where I can.

Oh, but I don't order supersized stuff. Just the regular sized junk food :)

Redundant, not oxymorons:

Fat-free jellybeans
Carb-free meat products (as in 'Healthy Choice turkey: Carb-free')
Carb-free or low-carb cottage cheese, eggs, and so forth

Oxymorons:

Any processed food labeled all-natural
Pretty much anything labeled 'authentic' anywhere
Original recipe of KFC apparently not the original
All-American French fries

@chiff--I too love lightly deep fried!

pjracz - Almond "juice" (?) was called "milk" in medieval times. The word "milk," as applied to anything but lactation's end result, isn't just some new-fangled new-age hippie dippy thang.

@therealchiff, "jumbo shrimp" is my favorite -- my dad used to say that my mother and I eating shrimp was cannabalism. =)

Oven Fried ! Think about it, in order to be fried it has to be immersed in oil. The term should be Oven Crisped.

Aarrrgggg! My biggest food pet peeve/oxymoron - tender-crisp vegetables!! Either eat them raw (crisp) or cook them through (tender).

@radley: the 'fat free half & half" cracks me up! my dad buys for his coffee(eating all sorts of processed junk doesnt bother him) --like, what the heck-half what and half what?
@fins: if youre identifying 'gourmetpizza' as an oxymoron, i only hope it's not done in a derrogatory tone!

@hungrychristel: the 'chocolately chips' and [countless other] like dubiously -comprised 'goodies'---ALL misleading marketing. wrong, wrong, wrong. lord help the poor saps who lack any food knowledge.

@ribster.... what prevents you from putting oil in the oven? i am confused.

When I worked at the Cheese Shop in Williamsburg, VA, we had to write "chillled gazpacho" on the menu board or people would come back, pissed that their soup was cold.

Fresh frozen.

I once asked a waitress if the fish was fresh - this was in Monterey, CA, where they really should know better - and she brightly informed me that it was "fresh frozen."

Because I'm a fool who honestly believes in the educability of everyone, I explained to her that fish was either fresh or frozen. It couldn't be both.

She then explained to me that the fish had been fresh before it was frozen......

haha the chilled gazpacho story is funny, It just reminds me that we are not the rest of the world!

@ribster-oven fried. i used to think the same thing, but was proved wrong. oil heated in the oven until hot enough to fry. chicken, fries, etc are then put in the pan of oil and the pan is returned to the oven for the duration of cooking. it's weird, but tasty.

@karynMC-Medieval times used to believe in witches too. They were almost as bad as the "Hippy Dippy thang". Now go and look up "milk" and you will see in definition "mammals" , nothing to do with nuts or plants. Peace man!!

Fresh Squeezed Juice - When said juice is bottled and shipped. At 'wichcraft here in NYC, they sell "fresh squeezed" orange and grapefruit juice. The juice is bottled and shipped from Florida. So how can it possibly be fresh squeezed? I asked once for clarification on that from the shop. I got mumbling and yes, it was fresh when they squeezed it, 1200 miles away and several days past.

@KarynMC--I recently read a book that had recipes from medieval times in it and I too was thrown by the commonness of almond milk! I had thought it was a recent innovation, but apparently it isn't--people ate it during Lent when dairy was prohibited.

non-fat decaf latte.... our local coffe house calls that the 'why bother'!

@the OP: Carpaccio refers to the color used in the dish (a particular shade of red used a lot by a painter of the same name, like "Titian Red"), not the raw-ness. Splitting hairs, I know. I just love that it makes me sound so edu-ma-cated.

Hmmm I stand corrected. Thanks - it's just I never thought about or read anything that said heat your oil in the oven. I have finished off stuff that I deep or pan fried on the stove and then put in the oven. But never stuck a pan full of oil in the oven with the intent to fry something in it.

Fat free cheese/butter/whipped cream...like, HUH?

I like when cholesterol free appears on vegetables and fruit. Like, duh.

KFC used to go by Kitchen Fresh Chicken back in the day- that's a bit of an oxymoron.

And finally, just all around appalling, I ordered a vegetarian meal at a Greek place once and asked how the green beans were cooked. The response? "With bacon grease"
Don't even ask.

Bacon, by most accounts, is cured by definition. So, when you see "uncured bacon" on a label, it certainly can be considered an oxymoron.

But why is it on the label, you wonder? Because " . . . USDA's definition of 'cured' meats are those to which synthetic nitrates and nitrites have been added in the form of sodium nitrite and sodium nitrate. When those synthetic nitrates and nitrites are not used, the meat must be labeled 'uncured' " (source).

Basically, if you've been confused by this "uncured bacon" business, you are not alone. It stumped me.

@susquehanna: oh, dear. thats all i'm gonna say.

Here's another - restaurants advertising HomeMade food. I know it typically means made from scratch - but it implies it was made in someone's home.

And my favorite is the Ice Cream shop advertising Hand Dipped ice cream. I know their trying to say it's dipped from a carton and not squeezed out of a soft serve machine.

Finally - a Martini is a Martini - not an Appletini, Mangotini, Chocolatetini, Lemontini, Shrimp Cocktail tini - yada yada yada....just because it's served in a martini glass doesn't mean it deserves - a 'tini' in it's description!

LOL Ribster! Totally with you on the 'tinis. And a Chocolatetini just sounds gross.

I never order a supersized big Mac meal but I do get fairly fattening fast food with a diet Coke. I'm so used to drinking it that I don't even like the regular stuff and thanks to all the preservatives, I'm 23 and don't look a day over 12.
