Good Food in Financial District?
I'll be visiting NYC frequently over the next several months and staying in the financial district. Can anyone suggest a reasonably priced restaurant for dinner? I'd prefer a casual atmosphere with simple, well prepared dishes. I try to watch my calories when traveling, so grilled fish and vegetables are favorites.

Bridge Cafe on Dover Street - eclectic menu, oldest continually operating restaurant in NYC, charming, lovely old bar. Adrienne's Pizza Bar on Stone Street - thin crust pizza, good salads, sleek decor (not a pizza parlor!). Stone Street has lots of restaurants, including an Irish pub called Ulysses and a French patisserie called Financier. You're not that far from Chinatown, always a good place for steamed fish, available nearly everywhere...

Those are very good recommendations for the area. Kind of slim pickings down here, unfortunately. I'd add Les Halles on John Street, as well. Good French bistro food, and quite casual. If you walk over to the waterfront at Battery Park City you could go to PJ Clarke's. It's casual, and it has decent, if not great, food. The big plus with PJ Clarke's is now that the weather is getting nicer you might be able to sit outside at the marina, which makes it very nice indeed.

I would second Financier. If calories are very important, Yushi (in the World Financial Center) actually puts calorie counts on its dishes. But it is more of a takeaway place. Salud, on Beekman, has excellent tapas, which should be more reasonably portioned. If you're willing to walk a little bit, Bouley Market has moved into where Bouley used to be, on West Broadway, and they have a by-pound lunch buffet and a nice seating area, it seems like they would have something like steamed fish and vegetable dishes.

Stone Street has lots of good choices, as does Front Street down in the Seaport area - very good pizza and trattoria Italian at Il Brigante, terrific Japanese at Suteishi on Peck Slip, sandwiches and salads elsewhere along the street. I had dinner at Bridge Cafe recently and I am sad to report it was not great - there may be a new chef or perhaps it was just an off night. The ambience at Bridge remains wonderful, however. There's also Alfanoose on Maiden Lane -- terrific Middle Eastern.
