New KFC commercial
Sooo, has anyone seen the new KFC commercial with "Chef" Sandra Lee and G. Garvin. Saw it this morning and just about spit my coffee. Have to admit, never heard of G. Garvin. Looked him up and he seems ligit although there is no mention of culinary school of any kind. Can't get a good grip on his background aside from 3 cookbooks and cooking with Leno. I was wondering if real chefs had a problem with this or if they just figure that everyone realizes Shmandra is not a chef and this is a commercial for KFC and the less they make of it the better. So Chefs: Let it slide or does this p*** you off???

Don't care one iota, have never spent a dime in KFC.

Haven't seen the commercial, yet. I actually clicked on this link because I just saw the one about their new, unfried chicken, or something like that, and I was wondering if this was related to that.
As to the 'chef' title, doesn't really matter to me. It was my understanding that the title is somewhat honorary?? Maybe I heard that somebody proclaims you as one based on their recognition of the integrity of your product? I guess, tho, that should probably take Sandra out of the running for the title! Of course, my not being a chef by any stretch of the imagination means I have no business discussing it with any authority.

A $100,000 degree from the Culinary Institute of America does not necessarily make you a chef (it does, however, make you very deeply in debt). Lack of a culinary degree does not mean you are not a chef, it simply means you are not classically trained.
Titles are fairly meaningless (in what army is Sanders a Colonel?). "Chef" does not always = great cook. I don't care if KFC's spokesperson is Julia Child or Yosemite Sam. I care that a spokesperson actually uses/enjoys the products they tout.

i don't know if G. Garvin attended culinary school but he has served as executive chef in restaurants. he's legit in my book. and it's too bad you didn't mention his successful cooking show. i think this post should have been more about sandra.
_greenbean at 3:12PM on 04/20/09
@greenbean That's just it-- I had never heard of him. Where can I see his show? I am not complaining about him, just wondering who he is.
finsbigfan at 3:45PM on 04/20/09
his show is on TV One

The irony of having Sandra Lee and Garvin do a commercial for KFC is that KFC's target demographic wouldn't know who the hell they are. And I personally do care a chicken leg over who endorses what. If they want to make a buck - more power to em.
(I don't go to KFC once a month for 'healthy' - I go for gut wrenching extra crispy chicken - a bucket of it)

I don't know who G.Garvin is either! But, as per my other post I just made a few minutes ago, I hate Sandra Lee. I've struggled to try and respect her, but I just can't and so it's hard for me to call her a chef. Alas, if you go by the definition on wikipedia that a chef is "a person who cooks professionally", I guess she is one. You don't have to attend culinary school to be a chef, but if you want to use that reasoning, then Sandra Lee again can take the title. She went to Le Cordon Bleu, which is depressing to know.
meem21 at 4:19PM on 04/20/09
@meem21 - Attending LCB doesn't necessarily mean quality. That name is now owned by some conglomerate and attached to several schools that may not be as worthy as that name could suggest. I know that's the case in my area.
mollykate678 at 4:29PM on 04/20/09
@meem21 - don't be depressed, she only attended LCB for a few days, she never actually graduated, it was too much monkey business for her!
brooke29 at 4:38PM on 04/20/09
Nope not yet, so that means i better hurry up to KFC (read older topic on Pumps experience with KFC, can't remember title, sorry), and try the chicken before it airs in Seattle.

What the heck is TV One?
I think Foghorn Leghorn would be a better spokesperson for KFC than Yosemite Sam. In a disturbing sort of way.

We just wrote an article about this over at Food Network Humor, too. KFC had the audacity to put this woman in a CHEF'S JACKET for these promo ads? Sandra Lee is not a chef, and pouring a can of mushroom soup over raw chicken in a slow cooker is not cooking. What a joke.

hahahaha I totally thought that guy was LL Cool J... I only saw the commercial once, but does anyone else think it looks like him? I trust LL Cool J's food recommendations way more than the mysterious G. Garvin!
Embackus at 6:36PM on 04/20/09
Colonel Sanders was a Kentucky Colonel.

Just thought I'd share.
tderning at 8:36PM on 04/20/09
Come on. We're expecting KFC to all of a sudden be truthful in advertising? They officially changed the company name to KFC from Kentucky Fried Chicken - why? So people will forget it's fried??
Remember, these are the guys who tried to peddle their stuff as diet food during the heyday of the low-carb fad.
Don't think for a second that Colonel Sanders isn't rolling in his grave. What's produced today as KFC is a pale facsimile of the meaty chicken pieces sold when he was still alive and at the helm of the company.
therealchiffonade at 9:48PM on 04/20/09
@mollykate, interesting to note! LCB isn't by me, so I've never heard anything about the more recent mediocrity. I guess I don't feel so bad for going to ICE now. :)
@brooke29, really? Interesting! It's kind of like how Nikki Hilton said she attended FIT to sound more legitimate in the fashion industry.

I walked into the CIA one time and chatted with someone. Damn, I forgot to add that credential to my resume'. I did the same at Princeton (hell, I practically lived there for a few years), The Wharton School, MIT and Drexel. I should have a spectacular resume'!
I had fried something from that chain many years ago and it was all breading. Seriously. Remember the commercial that asked, "Where's the beef?" - well, I was asking, "Where's the chicken?".
I don't know Garvin at all, but Shamdra is pretty and has no food morals, so who better to endorse? It's for grilled chicken, so that's a lot harder to hide - wonder what they can do to chemical it up? I'll be optimistic and hope it's delicious and healthy. Hey, did I hear laughing out there, people????
PerkyMac at 10:44AM on 04/21/09
Foghorn Leghorn: "What's that, I say, what's that youra cookin son?"
Chicken Hawk: "You, in eleven herbs and spices"
