Last Ditch Attempt to Eat the Best of Austin
So, I have been in Austin for the past two years in grad school. It has been a great experience, I have learned a lot, made great friends and eaten A LOT of great food.
I just got a job (take that economy) and will be leaving ATX in a month. I was hoping for your suggestions on must eat places before I leave.
I have done a lot of the go-to's, so would appreciate any hints on hidden gems or which splurge restaurants are worth it.
So far my favorite places have been:
Enchildadas y Mas
Texas Chili Parlor
Smitty's
Scholtz's
Curra's
34th St. Cafe
and more
Thanks

I saw an episopde of Bobby Flay's Throwdown. There is a crepe truck that looked amazing and one I'd want to seek out if I were there. Here' a link to them.

Please have at least one greasy Texadelphia cheesesteak for me! At Dell Diamond if at all possible!

Chilito, Taco Deli, TIFF'S TREATS (yum!)

Jezebel is supposed to be pretty awesome (under the splurge column). And be sure to get a dose of east-side barbecue while you can: Sam's, or Ben's Longbranch.
We've had a lot of good meals from Java Noodles on E. Oltorf. It's Indonesian, and the beef rendang is awesome. Delicious nasi goreng, too.
I hope that some of the great Vietnamese places on N. Lamar fall into the "go to" places you've already tried. If not, I highly recommend you hop up to Sunflower, Tam's Deli, or something similar.

If you like Indian food my family loves Star of India on W. Anderson. They have a buffet with so many great options. The best lamb meatballs I have ever had. I moved to Austin about a year ago and have actually had trouble finding many places I love. I came from the culinary industry in Portland, Oregon and Austin just hasn't been the same. I do like a couple of your fave's though. Thanks for sharing.

At all:
I still need to go: to Uchi, the Eastside BBQ joints, Crepes, taco deli.
Things I love that others have mentioned: Yes I go to the vietnamese "chinatown" center on lamar and braker-love the banh mi and the bbq place.
i live across the street from a texadelphia, and any time my arteries can handle it pick up a queso compuesto for dinner. Plus happy hour prices is only costs 3.50!
Love el chilito. The daily hipster fashion show makes for entertaining eating. How is real el chile? never been.
I want to go to that indo place but haven't yet.
Tiff's will have to happen, I live close to it, but it is always closed when I drive by.
I actually dislike star of india, I think there are many superior places. Bombay Grill on braker and 183, madras pavilion on 183 and burnett, and that gujarati place on north lamar.
Thanks all, keep it coming.

Polvo's (S. First)
Shalimar (N. Lamar/Rundberg)
Sarovar (N. Burnet)
TacoDeli (previously mentioned, great salsas)
Screaming Goat (Formerly 11th St. Tacos) - get the El Paso style tacos
Torchy's Tacos (S. First) The burger trailer next door is great too.
I pray to the sweet Lord that you've been to Homeslice, although you probably snub your nose at TX pizza since you have NYC heritage. I'll come up for a Lombardi's run sometime.
Also, I will have you over for one last epicurean feast. Let me know a good date/time for you.

Hog Island Deli
lagomorph at 5:40PM on 04/23/09
Have you tried charcoal grilled chicken from Pollo Regio (now Pollo Rico)? It's delicious. Also, Casino El Camino for burgers.
renzata at 8:52PM on 04/23/09
I second Homeslice, it's not NY pizza but hello, Texas has tex-mex. And bbq.
others to try:
-Guero's on SoCo
-Juan in a million - on the East side, really really good if you have a hangover on a Sunday morning/afternoon
-Clay Pit, 16th and Guadalupe - amazing lunch buffet for like $7!!!
-Salt Lick in Driftwood, TX (plzzz tell me you've been there! If it's too far, Stubb's will do).
-Eastside Cafe - Manor just past 35
-Vespaio/Enoteca Vespaio on SoCo (one is more expensive than the other, but they are both amazing)
-Amy's ice cream - not really a restaurant, but yummyyy
-Zoot (haven't been for a while and I heard it changed locations and is not so good now, but their sister restaurant Wink is supposedly pretty good)
-Uchi, S. Lamar, and only if you have a few hundred dollars to throw around...
Well, I have a lot more suggestions where those came from, but if you only have a month you might not even have enough time!
itsdelux at 10:10PM on 04/23/09
Please god, tell me that you've been to Guerros on S. Congress.
The Omelettry - 4811 Burnet Rd ~ Awesome! Addictive.
Hyde Park on Duval ~ great food, great location
Santa Rita on W. 38th - Good food, good staff, authentic.
Trudys - 409 W 30th Street ~ Amazing fish tacos, and the stuffed avocado is Mmmmmmm.
carolrsfMISSESTEXAS at 12:26AM on 04/24/09
Let me know which of those place you've already been to.
carolrsfMISSESTEXAS at 12:26AM on 04/24/09
Just to name a few places...Sugar Mama's Bakeshop, Mighty Cone, Food Heads, Avenue B, Trailer Park Eatery, (If you can swing it) Hudson's on the Bend, Ranch 616, Siena, Soco Cafe, P.J. Terry's, Vivo, Hoover's, Las Palomas, Fonda San Miguel, Moonshine, Iron Works. And last but not least, visit the Sunset Valley Farmers Market and Boggy Creek Farm before you go.

I moved from New York City to Austin in late 2006. I had intended to hide out in a place where New York blogs couldn't possibly find me. This Austin focus is disturbing. I'm hiding out here, I tell you. Living the quiet life, expecting baby #2 in June.
Star of India is a regular with us. We also like the Texican Cafe--between 4-7 they have appetizers, according to a recent ad. Hut's Hamburgers, of course. Cannoli Joe's (all you can eat Italian) for the kids. I wasn't impressed with Gatti's pizza, but its play area is OK if you have kids. We even like chains such as Texas Roadhouse. Mimi's Cafe is another solid chain, with good breakfasts and even a good burger. Rudy's breakfast tacos aren't bad. Carino's (another chain) now has an all-you-can eat pasta feast. Whataburger has 24-hour service. The Mediterranean Buffet is another family spot. The Hunan Garden and China Cafe offer reliable Chinese. Don't forget to try Z'Tejas!
Texas has a lot for families--that's why we moved out of my Manhattan closet.
barrypopik at 8:35AM on 04/24/09
DiMassi's Med. Buffet is pretty awesome, especially since there is a lack of middle eastern options. Along those lines, you should check out AlBorz on W. Anderson. Great Iranian stuff, although dinner is a little pricey.
It's too bad Austin doesn't have anything Turkish. You'll have to come over to our place for that.
lagomorph at 11:42AM on 04/24/09
I highly disagree with most of the places listed with the exception of Clay Pit, Juan in a Million, Tiff's Treats, and Torchy's Tacos. If you have had a real (i.e., Philly) cheesesteak or even one from any other city in the northeast, you will NOT like Texadelphia. I have tried to like that place two times, and it just never happened. I've never tried Uchi, but I've heard a lot about it.
You should also go to Rudy's BBQ (they also have a new burger place on Brodie Lane), if you haven't. I like that place much more than Salt Lick (I was very disappointed with the bbq at SL). Good luck! You're lucky to have found a job! I cannot wait to graduate and leave Austin!! Congrats!
alesbica at 12:49PM on 04/24/09
-Mother's Cafe and Garden, bueno burger or sloppy joes
-Arpeggio Grill, falafel
-Thanh Nhi, pork pate spring roll (pictured all over the walls)
-Dairy Queen, steak finger basket
-El Tacorrido, breakfast tacos all day long
-Alamo Drafthouse, $5 dollar shake
-Clay Pit, mussels
-Hoover's or Hill's, CFS
-Polvos, puerco adovado, pitcher of margaritas, spicy marinated carrots!
-Kebabalicious, gyro, kebab
-Zocalo, churros (to-go)
-Cafe Medici, walk here with your churros to enjoy with a cappucino
topodrinko at 5:19PM on 04/24/09
However said Jezebel I wholeheartedly second it. BEST MEAL OF MY LIFE!
Polvo's is a definite must! In a town full of tex-mex this is truly great interior mexican food.
katrinales at 7:29PM on 04/24/09
Been there many times over last 6 years - besides the usual places mentioned above, my favorite hidden gem is Freda's Seafood - nestled in between a Holiday Inn express and a Hampton at 10903 Pecan Park Rd near the intersection of 183 and 620.
One hint - used to have Happy Hour appetizers 1/2 off - around 5. Their appetizers are just smaller versions of their main creative entrees. For a few bucks you can enjoy the best of their menu.
Ribster at 6:21AM on 04/26/09
I have to disagree about Jezebel. I went there for my birthday in February, and was quite disappointed. The ambiance was nice, but the food was not impressive. The complicated flavor combinations sounded interesting on the menu, but in the end they just didn't work for me. My crab cake was cold, and the vegan spring rolls were nothing special. For the main course, my mom had the Chilean Sea Bass which was excellent, but the horseradish mashed potatoes it was paired with ruined the brightness of the dish. I had the El Rey Salmon, one of their specialties. I could see how the chocolate might bring out the sweetness of the fish, but the salmon was over powered. Perhaps, I went on an off night?
Alesbica: You're absolutely right about Rudy's. It's so much tastier than Salt Lick. Their sauce was a let down, and not worth the drive.
Sweet E at 9:57PM on 04/26/09
Oh, places to eat hmm... here are my favorites that I must have anytime I'm in town and other favs.
tacodeli, Hey Cupcake, Thai Kitchen, Salvation Pizza (I think its the best in Austin), Kruetz in Lockhart, Salt Lick, Katz's, Cissi's Market, Magnolia Cafe.
Hope this helps!
bigbite at 11:05AM on 04/27/09
Specifically at Taco Deli i recommend the Thunderheart bison picadillo taco!
peachfish at 11:34AM on 04/27/09
Zoot is awesome!
Do Sugar Mama's rather then Hey Cupcake, Hey Cupcake's cupcakes are downright boring, all they have going for them is their cuteness.
I second (or third or fifth) Rudy's for barbecue.
Also, you MUST go to Fonda San Miguel. A little pricey, but so worth it.
peachfish at 11:38AM on 04/27/09
wow, thanks for all the comments.
Benn to thanh ni- was good.
LOVE salvation, go there at least once a week. Way better than the sanctuary or whatever that place is on 43rd and b. Though if you like crust go there.
Rudy's=good
Mother's- Really? Like seriously? I have been there twice and neither time was very good. I've got nothing but love for the (chronically misguided) vegetarians, but haven't found anything worth eating there.
I went to El Caribe mexican on north lamar last night, was pretty good. I like the salsa bar. The charro beans were very good.
Going to Java noodles right now, with one of the commenters. Drop by if you want. He looks like the aggie he is and I look like the New Yorker I am.
SkinnyFatty at 1:33PM on 04/28/09
Java noodles was tasty. The lunch special comes with free access to a "salad bar" which included:
crappy looking veggies
2 kinds of spring rolls- savory and sweet ones filled with banana and topped with condensed milk. The banana ones WERE GOOD
2 kinds of soup, and nice fresh wonton chips. 1 soup looked nasty, the other was a very tasty cocunutty thing. Sorry for the terrible descriptions.
For my main, I had a white curry. It was good, but tasted like thai food.
Lunch companion had some very tasty fried, spicy, sweet fried chicken bites. Those things were darn yummy.
Good price, $6.95 for the lunch special, plus 2 bucks for a very good indonesian coffee. It was like Vietnamese coffee, but it came premixed, and was more pleasant to drink.
I would recommend it to friends.
Next door is a philapino place, and a vietnamese place that looked good.
Tonight Sushi Japon. Very nice decor, friendly service. Had salmon nigiri. The pieces of salmon were huge, and flavorful. the unagi was very good.
Also had spicy tuna and spicy salmon rolls. They were ok, but not fantastic. The meat part was good, not goopy like some places, and clearly made with high quality fish. My beef is with the seaweed wrapper on the inside, it was unpleasantly tough. I would have finished the rest of the piece but still be chewing on it, not cool. Also this place was kinda expensive. 28 bucks for the food I mentioned and a coke, not counting tip.
Tomorrow Sam's on the east side.
SkinnyFatty at 1:42AM on 04/29/09
Also, have made reservations for Uchi and Austin land and cattle for when the gf comes down next week to help me pack. Also planning on hitting up karibou ethiopian on the eastside.
SkinnyFatty at 1:44AM on 04/29/09
On places people have suggested:
Guerros on S. Congress.- No, i hate waiting for an hour to get a table
The Omelettry - 4811 Burnet Rd ~ sounds good, I live close
Hyde Park on Duval ~ greasy, and crappy
Santa Rita on W. 38th - Meh
Trudys - 409 W 30th Street ~ Love that Stuffed avocado.
Alborz- My hetero life mate is persian, and I have eaten a lot of persian food, I liked the meat there, but the tadiq was swimming in grease, and the fessenje was subpar. One thing I am psyched for in NYC is going back to Ravagh, such good persian food.
SkinnyFatty at 1:54AM on 04/29/09
Thanks so much to everyone for giving suggestions, keep em coming. I really am going to try to eat my way through Austin in the next three weeks.
-Casino el camino looks awesome, and I will def eat there.
-Will prob skip all the cupcake places to focus on cheese and meat
-Clay pit- the first time I ate there I thought it was overpriced crap, the second two times were much, much better. I will give props where it is due, it is the only good indian place downtown. That being said it is expensive. I would much prefer to go up north to Madras Pavillion or Swat.
-Sarovar and Shalimar- both ok, not my faves
-Taco Deli will be done.
- Random rant, why doesn't tamale house have tamales, makes me angry.
-random rave- barfly's- I love you so much barfly's. You are responsible for the best terrible decisions in my life.
-Rudy's- meh
-Ruby's- I like, good beef ribs, call ahead. Brisket is ok.
-Vespiao- amazing, I want more of it
-Eastside cafe- it is ok, but I don't see what the fuss is about.
-The omlettry looks like a must try
-Huts's-meh
-Hoffbraue- tasty onion rings, old school
SkinnyFatty at 2:05AM on 04/29/09
Sam's BBQ- Ate there last night. The ribs were hella dry, clearly they had been sitting around for awhile, the mutton was moist and unctuous, dripping with fat. Very good.
Decor was fun, the guy behind the counter was super nice.
Today- Omlettery- Friendly service, typical austin decoration. I had huevos rancheros. The potatoes were undercooked, the beans were very toothsome. Not sure if that is just how they do it there, but I prefer softer beans. The eggs were well cooked and topped by a tasty, tomato, jalapeno, onion, pepper mixture. Honestly though, I felt like there wasn't enough food on the plate. I ate at 1, and it is 4 now, and I am pretty hungry. Next time I go I will try an omlette. though I was upset by their lack of meat fillings for them.
SkinnyFatty at 5:27PM on 04/30/09
Last night- Top Notch
Chili burger- meh, typical fast food style, with the redeeming feature of a chargrill.
Onion rings=da'bomb. I love them, crave them, and want more.
Today- Angry Goat tacos- super greasy and not worth it.
