Incorrect Fast Food Memories
Growing up, my family and I rarely ever ate fast food. While I'm sure many considered it a part of everyday life that made things more convenient, it was a luxury we couldn't afford. I had a best friend whose family ate out- no joke- at least twice a day. They didn't eat fast food twice a day, as they often went to "sit-down restaurants, but I was able to get my convenience food fix thanks to her family.
She and I used to go to the park with her aunt. Before arriving, we'd go through the KFC drive-thru so that we could have a picnic at the park. I remember thinking that eating KFC's fried chicken and biscuits & honey on a blanket at the park was the most decadent, awesome thing you could do. I also remember thinking the chicken was ridiculously delicious.
I literally hadn't had KFC since then- and that was like sixteen years ago. I thought I'd give it a try today. Aside from being completely pissed that a bucket of chicken and a few crappy sides cost TWENTY-EIGHT DOLLARS, I was absolutely amazed as to how bad the food was. The mac and cheese was literally pre-cooked, over-cooked pasta in nacho cheese, the biscuits were fatty, weird hockey pucks, and the chicken- don't even get me started. It was so freakishly salty and greasy it was basically inedible.
Here are my questions:
1. Do kids just have really bad taste or has the quality of certain fast food chains gone down dramatically? (I really remember thinking that chicken was tasty as a kid and I had pretty decent taste.)
2. Has anyone else recently tried a food they remembered loving as a kid, only to realize it tastes like ass?

I say somethings yes and others no. For instance I have not been to a McDonalds for over a decade for a qrt poundr and cheese like I used to get as a kid, loved them. About month ago i decided to give it a try again, they still tasted the same as I remember but they have shrunk. Campbells Chicken and dumpling soup (they don't sell it in my part of the country) haven't had it for 30 years, ordered it from the plant itself tasted just the same as it did when I was 5 yrs old. So for me it goes both ways.

Good post - to answer your questions:
1 - Not sure kids have bad taste. I think they are driven by extreme marketing tactics which target them.
2 - Yes - last year I tried (after 30 years) the top 3 junk food shops that stood out in the 70's..(Mac, Jack and the King) - and forced myself to recreate my culinary taste of the time. The Big Mac and Fries were horrible - if I end up at a MacD today I'll sip coffee or nibble on their Apples. The Jumbo Jack was almost okay but a little rubbery. However their tacos still stand out as good (but thank God for Nexium). At Burger King, the Whopper stood out as the best. But I've gotten so conscience about calories, transfats and factory food, that although some of it tasted okay, I felt like I was ingesting plastic.
Oh and I'll pass on my comments regarding the Fried Chicken Houses - that in itself is a whole different category.
Way too many places to grab really good food without being subjected to 'factory food' hell.
When I'm on the road, I prefer now to stop at places like Whole Foods and grab a California Roll or some Spring Rolls for lunch. Times have changed and what we know now about what we ate in the past is pretty scary.

Pumpkinbear, I'm so glad you posted this--like your friend, although we weren't rich, we ate out ALL the time when I was a kid. My father made it a big priority because Greeks eat out a lot (he always said even the poorest family in his village would eat out, that it was viewed as a necessity) and my mom hated to cook.
Of course I LOVED Happy Meals, KFC, and so forth like you, and thought it was wonderful. Now I haven't eaten it in 7 years or more, and even when I did during my 20s, I found it lacking--mostly sad, overheated stuff.
I think that the quality did go down--the food seems 'held' more, and I do wonder if they use less good 'original' products (meat, potatoes) to save money.
But even posters here say they like the fries, so I don't know if my palate has gotten better.
HeartofGlass at 5:04AM on 04/19/09
^oh, I shouldn't say, better, just changed--obviously, there are plenty of things I like that aren't perfect--but fast food just isn't my guilty pleasure any more. I think sales volume and less rigorous training of the 'assemblers' may be a factor too...
I would say that even from what I have seen, Pizza Hut has gone down the worst--as a kid, I adored it, now even just looking at how shriveled it is when others eat it...
HeartofGlass at 5:06AM on 04/19/09
I also just had KFC for the first time since I was a kid (about 18-20 years now) and I agree, it was really salty! It wasn't the most horrible thing I've ever had, if anything it was a really greasy salty fix, but it certainly wasn't as good as I'd expected it to be and I did tell my husband to remind me next time (if there is one) that it wasn't worth it.

Great question!
In grade school, one of our field trips (no kidding!) was to a McDonalds. It's shocking to me now that this wasn't seen by the adults or by the public school board as an introduction to a lifetime of product loyalty.
What I got out of that trip was that their french fries were the most amazing thing I had ever eaten! Years later, I was told (and I don't know if it's true) that at that time, McD's fries were cooked in beef tallow (which would make anything taste awesome). As time, money, science and healthcare marched on, the beef tallow was replaced by oil, which, of course, completely changed the taste and texture of those amazing fries.
If anybody knows the facts, I'd love to fiind out if what I was told was true!
serious1 at 7:35AM on 04/19/09
@serious1--I don't think it's just the beef tallow, because pretty much all fast food has gone down in quality. Your field trip doesn't surprise me--when I was in grade school in the early 80s, going to McDonald's after the school's annual athletic 'exhibition' was virtually required--everyone went, and no one commented on the 'irony' of how unhealthy it was--hey, McD's sponsored the Olympics!
It's also hard to remember (or too early for some to remember) that once, McD's was considered rather wholesome. My parents thought sugar=Satan, but because McDonald's wasn't 'dessert,' hey it must be healthy--it's protein, right? In school, we used to jump rope to 'twoallbeefpatties-lettuce-sauce--lettuce--cheese--all--on-a--sesame--seeeddd-bun' or whatever the Big Mac ad was...
HeartofGlass at 7:51AM on 04/19/09
@serious1 - The beef tallow thing is true. And as the story goes, McD's claimed to have switched chainwide to vegetable oil years before they actually did so.
I do think that fast food has gone down in quality since I was a kid. All processed food has - food scientists have continuously discovered ways to synthesize things and make food cheaper and cheaper...and since fast food is all about the most food for the least money (and the most profit for the chain, of course), it's natural that they'd embrace these changes, along with mass producers of packaged foods.

My incorrect f.f.m. was with candy rather than fast food, as I seldomly ate it growing up & still don't really eat it...
I remember being disappointed with the Hershey Bar..As a child, I thought the milk chocolate had a unique taste unlike other chocolate..A more complex taste rather than sweet....When I was older and had a plain Hershey Bar, I was so disappointed with the taste...It was like all other commercial milk chocolate bars...too sweet and nothing spectacular...It may be that as a child, my tastes were not as developed or the quality of food as gone down over the years.....My guess-it's a little bit of both..
Italiancupcake at 9:41AM on 04/19/09
When I was a kid we got a bucket of KFC about 4 times a year. When the house was being painted, when the floor was being waxed etc. When we went out to eat we sat down and we ate a nice meal in a nice restaurant with a salad and tablecloths. We never ate at McDonald's. I never had McDonald's till I was 16 when I went to the mall with my friends. I never had a Chik Fil A till last year ffs.
You want good KFC you got to get there when they open OR during the busy time. That way its fresh and just cooked. Fried chicken, anyone's sitting around is bad.
I think fast food is not for everyone.
JerzeeTomato at 10:50AM on 04/19/09
@ Pumpkinbear...go procure yourself a nice spicy piece of Popeyes. You will never return to KFC again.

I agree with imapct of marketing on kids..I used to BEG {literally} my Mother to get that stuff that was striped jelly & Peanut Butter in a jar b/c of ads on T.V. She relented once & when I got home & ripped into it I was completely deflated, but, months later the taste-memory fell away & the insisting started all over again. Having had to throw out the 1st jar, my Mom simply turned a deaf ear & let me sulk...I see that stuff in the market still & can only imagine that it is as gross now as it was then!
stigcr at 11:16AM on 04/19/09
I remember having McNuggets after they first came out. They taste much better in my memory than they do now. I don't know if that's a recipe change over time or just a trick of memory. I've found that foods that I no longer like foods that I loved as a kid (grape jelly, ketchup, sweet spaghetti sauce, etc). I think tastes change over time.
gingercookiewithlime at 1:09PM on 04/19/09
The childhood memory that comes to me isn't fast food related, but, to borrow a word from a previous poster, deflating all the same. My mom used to make spaghetti every couple of weeks. It was Kraft, from the green box. I used to LOVE that. When I started having to make my own food, I remembered how much I used to gobble that stuff up. So I got a box and made it. It was, sadly, nothing like my fond memories.
mollykate678 at 1:13PM on 04/19/09
When I was a kid my grandmother was a "from scratch" woman. We'd have awesome meals with food picked right from her garden or if it was off season, from her huge larder of self-canned items.
However, every once in a while we'd get take out. The only take out I can ever remember (besides going with them a few times to a Chinese restaurant) was KFC.
It's not your imagination. When I was a kid, drumsticks were drumsticks! Now they're the size of chicken wings if you're lucky. The chicken seems fattier and saltier.
Somewhere along the way the food did get less tasty and a bit shabbier.
But, their mashed potatoes were always poor quality ... that doesn't mean that I didn't like them!
One other thing - I have found that the outlet you visit does make a difference. Some will overcook or let the chicken sit in the heater for too long, others have great overturn and really fresh stuff.
Now, if I'm going to have takout chicken, it'll be El Pollo Loco.
Cybele May at 1:17PM on 04/19/09
I cannot do the KFC thing. It is greasy beyond belief. The gravy does something to my insides and I burp the flavor all day long-yuk.
Same goes for Burger King. Can't stand it.
About twice a year I crave something from McD's. But just twice a year because I feel gross for about three days after!
I pretty much avoid fast food altogether. For some reason it seems like in the past few years, I've just lost the desire for it, even when I'm really hungry and the convenience of it should attract me.
Guess it's a good thing!
soozm32 at 2:58PM on 04/19/09
I used to LOVE Mickey D's Chicken McNuggets. Not only that, but I loved the ones that had the gross grey gristle inside, rather than the ones that actually looked like they might be chicken. (I was like 5 years old! My tastes were weird!) I ordered them again a couple of years ago, and I couldn't even handle the ones that were more chicken-y. I threw them out an got a fruit and yogurt parfait, since at least I sort of can recognize that as food.
cycorider at 3:27PM on 04/19/09
@ Italiancupcake, I'm with you on the candy thing. A couple of years ago I bought a box of "Candy from the '60s" to give my kids a taste of what we used to eat. I was amazed at how almost tasteless some of it seemed. It was noticeable how much less sweet it was than the candies they eat now. I think that much of our food is pumped up with "flavor enhancers" and extra sugar and salt. We've gotten used to it, even those of us who don't eat a lot of processed food. And now our old favorites--just don't taste the same.
smallblondemom at 3:57PM on 04/19/09
I don't have any childhood fast food memories because we never ate fast food. Maybe it's not entirely true, because my Mum and I occasionally shared fish & chips (she ate the fish, I ate the chips), but that was it. Otherwise, it was homemade food or, on a rare occasion, eating out at a nice restaurant. I was probably 16-17 when I first tried McDonalds and Pizza Hut (and I wasn't terribly impressed by either one). And since I don't have any childhood fast food memories, I guess I don't get disappointed when I come across any, although in many cases, I don't understand why people like it so much.
But in general, I don't know that kids have bad taste - I think kids just adapt to love whatever is available to them, and have that wonderful gift of finding magic and excitement in everyday things that may seem silly to us when we grow up. Interestingly though, I can't think of a single thing that I really loved when I was little that I completely dislike now (but there are quite a few things that worked the other way around).
brooke29 at 4:47PM on 04/19/09
The only fast food we ever had at my house growing up were Krystal hamburgers and they are still as yummy as ever. Not good for me, but they still taste just the same and I try not to indulge very often these days.
Pinotnana at 5:27PM on 04/19/09
I enjoyed reading many of these. This notion is something I actually very often comment on!
Growing up, I want to say like once a week my mother or father brought home KFC as well. When I had some not too terribly long ago, I can't say I was impressed, but it brought with it a comfortable feeling. Oh, I do remember trying the biscuits again; like many of you have commented, not nearly as lovely as I thought.
Otherwise, we did actually pick up McDonalds-I remember I always had my burger with patty and cheese only.
I won't eat McDonald's today. I cannot, however, remember a specific revisit event--I just know I have refused it for quite a while; plain burgers do not stir any excitement with me.
I do remember something else: My siblings, myself, and my parents would have a ritual stop at Sonic after baseball and softball games. This is such a fun and fond memory.
The big things I remember wanting desperately to experience from my childhood-I mean, those that I remembered as invariably wonderful-- would be ramen noodles and Kraft mac. After many years of touching neither, I was miserably disappointed by the macaroni. (Most likely cause my mother doctored it up)
The ramens I didn't try again til college!! I cant say I hate those, actually--they may be as nice as I remember.

According to my BF when Sanders sold the business (can't remember the date thinking mid 70's), he went back later and tried it and was very disappointed to what they did, he is quoted as saying, "this is not my bird", and never ate there again. I remember as a little kid in the 70's going there and I loved it. I have not been there in years not because of the taste but because there is no KFC anywhere near me. Now that you got a curious streak going through me, I might have to stop and try a piece and see what it is like. The cost must be different in areas, because they keep advertising a bucket (I think 12 pieces) for $12.99 plus 2 sides. As for the Mac and Cheese that must be somewhat added later because they never had mac and cheese when i was a kid, believe me, i would have noticed.

Here are my questions:
1. Do kids just have really bad taste?
I would have to say we like certain tastes more as children then as adults... and we grow to like other tastes as we age as well...
or has the quality of certain fast food chains gone down dramatically? Without having worked in the restaurant to know if the ingredients changed, I cant answer that.
2. Has anyone else recently tried a food they remembered loving as a kid, only to realize it tastes like ass?
Plums. I used to love fresh plums. They all seem tart now. Actually, its a general change in preference from sour to bitter.
blizcheetah at 1:05AM on 04/20/09
We never had a Hardees by me growing up. I could only go to one when I visited my grandparents every couple of years and I remember thinking it was amazing. I went to visit them as an adult a few years ago and asked to go to Hardees. Bad mistake! The food was quite possibly the grossest thing I've ever had and I wanted to throw up. Now I'm glad we don't have it by me!
meem21 at 10:48AM on 04/20/09
I recently discovered the veggie burgers at the King. So few people eat them, they always have to make them fresh. In the long run, they're still pretty gross, but SO much better than the rest of the menu.
I was heartbroken when I got this year's Shamrock Shake at McD's. It wasn't minty. It was barely even green. Now McD's has not only ruined their own products and much of the world's health, but they took away my St. Paddy's day treat! Jerks.
wheatfoot at 12:57PM on 04/20/09
I actually just encountered this situation recently. When I was a kid, we had a Little Caesar's Pizza place right near our house, and it was a tradition that on Friday nights (my dog was pyschic and would routinely wait at the garage door for my father to walk in with it) that we would order a large pizza from them. At the time, I thought that it was the best thing in the world. I loved the crust and the sauce and that they never seemed to skimp on the toppings.
Years ago, that location shut down and we hadn't had one near us since then. But then a couple of weeks ago a new one opened up, so we tried it again. You know what? I actually still really like it! Something about that crust and and sauce still really tastes good to me!
Now, on the other hand, I used to love Dairy Queen M&M blizzards, and now I couldn't even get through a few bites without gaging. What happened there? I assume that M&M's and ice cream are still pretty much the same, but maybe my tastebuds have finally seen the light.

1. Do kids just have really bad taste or has the quality of certain fast food chains gone down dramatically? (I really remember thinking that chicken was tasty as a kid and I had pretty decent taste.)
Unless you were born super-evolved, the first time you tasted broccoli it probably tasted like kitty litter mixed with grass. Blech. As an adult, it's all different. Properly steamed or sauteed or gratineed, it's pretty damned good.
Same goes for fast food. Kids like the hyper-salted, hyper-fatty foods - all the more due to the cartoon characters associated with them. All the better that other kids loved it and the cherry on top was that mom disapproved. (At least mine did.) Here's another plate to spin - the more kids ate it, the more their palates came to accept it as real food. (Hence the positive memory.)
2. Has anyone else recently tried a food they remembered loving as a kid, only to realize it tastes like ass?
I guess the last time I ate a Big Mac, I wondered WTF did I see in this? It felt like a warm, wet glob in my hand ("Um, hamburgers are NOT supposed to bend that way") and really, all I tasted was salt. As a kid, I did love the occasional Mac and remember it tasting so much better. It probably did to my young tastebuds.
I don't think what you're describing is so much an "incorrect" food memory as much as a "romanticized" memory. It's not so much the actual flavor of the Big Mac (or KFC) but what you were doing at the time you built the positive memory. Lives were simpler, less responsibility, more fun, more play. Even if your childhood was sticky because of family discord or divorce, your foray into McD's or BK became a respite, an escape from whatever complications that lived at home. What wouldn't taste great under those circumstances?
therealchiffonade at 2:46PM on 04/20/09
I come from a big family and we lived in the country. We always ate at home, but on those rare occasions we got to go "out", it was McDonalds. I worked there for 2 years in high school and these days I can't go INSIDE one (Post Traumatic Stress lol), but I still drive-through them and when I'm sick, that's what I want - a hamburger kids meal.
My husband and I tell people how we met over a fish sandwich (he said it wasn't hot and i had to have them make a "fresh one".. he said i threw the second one at him, but I think he exagerates a little). Anyway I still love their sandwiches, but their fries are not as good as they were "back in the days".

Omg that KFC mac in cheese almost made me vomit the one and only time I tried it. If I want overcooked nacho cheese I'll scrape the dregs of the crockpot at my next office luncheon. Never again.
kazoinker at 3:11PM on 04/20/09
@therealchiffonade, do you think your first point about kids not liking foods like broccoli is due to taste preferences that actually change as we mature or acquiring the taste due to actually giving the foods another chance and going in with a more open mind? The first time I re-tried broccoli and actually enjoyed it, it was smothered in sugary mayo-ish dressing, raisins, and nuts in a broccoli salad, and for a while after that, I drowned it in either cheese, tomato sauce, or teriyaki sauce. Took a while before I began to enjoy it for its own taste. On the other hand, there have been other foods that grossed me out as a kid that I loved immediately upon giving them another chance as an adult, like beets. I absolutely agree with what you're saying, but am curious as to why you think that is.
cycorider at 4:03PM on 04/20/09

As a kid, I couldn't get broccoli to go all the way down my throat. It was bitter and nasty and worth being sent to bed just to escape eating it. Yes, I firmly believe our taste preferences change from childhood to adulthood. I don't think it has anything to do with having an open mind. I couldn't eat broccoli, cauliflower or scallops. As an adult, I love all three. I have no doubt my taste preferences changed. My love of broccoli rabe pretty much proves this. Talk about having your mouth turned inside out! Couldn't touch the stuff as a kid and now I can't live without it.
The first time I re-tried broccoli and actually enjoyed it, it was smothered in sugary mayo-ish dressing, raisins, and nuts in a broccoli salad, and for a while after that, I drowned it in either cheese, tomato sauce, or teriyaki sauce. Ah! Here's the difference. When I learned to eat broccoli and enjoy it - I was served plain steamed broccoli with a drizzle of olive oil, S&P. That's it. Pretty much pure broccoli vs. your salad with all kinds of distractions going on. This makes me sure tastes change as we grow.
I absolutely agree with what you're saying, but am curious as to why you think that is.
When you were a kid, did you like cotton candy? Right now I'd consider being forced to eat cotton candy right up there with waterboarding. When I was a kid, I'd eat the center of the Italian bread ripped out by my mother and dad - only after squishing it into a marble. Now, I'm strictly a crust girl. When I was a kid, the phrase "too sweet" was an oxymoron - an impossibility! Now, the idea of eating a Hostess Sno-Ball is repulsive. Too sweet is possible - just as too bitter (broccoli rabe!) was the perception back then.
The only difference = Time.
therealchiffonade at 10:03PM on 04/20/09
@chiff, I think it's different for everyone. I loved broccoli and brussels sprouts and cauliflower as a kid. And I hated cotton candy. Blech. No interest in eating it now, either.
The things that I like now that I didn't eat as a kid were the things that weren't presented to me as a kid. I didn't have asparagus until I was in my 20's because my mother never made it, and I didn't know anyone else who ate it at home.. But I loved it the first time I tried it.
There have been a whole lot of things that I tried for a the first time as an adult. Maybe I wouldn't have liked them as a kid, but I ate pretty much everything. Beets. Pickled herring. Cabbage. Liver & onions. Gizzards.
There are some things that I don't eat much anymore, like Spaghetti Os, Spam, Suzie Q's... But that's more because there are other options that I like better, not that I've come to hate those particular foods. I'm guessing that if I tried those things again tomorrow, I'd still like them.
dbcurrie at 12:32AM on 04/21/09
@chiffy - I have to agree with db here. I've always loved my sweets tart (but not Sweet Tarts:-)), so there was such a thing as "too sweet" for me even when I was little. I also loved pretty much all kinds of veg, except beetroot and aubergines (I've learnt to love aubergines - it was a texture issue and apparently, I got over it as I grew older. Beetroot, however, will never happen), and they were never smothered in cheese in our house - broccoli, for instance, was just lightly sauteed with garlic in olive oil, and I loved it that way (still do).
Maybe I just was a very odd child. I loved tongue and chopped liver, or liver & onions, among other things. Maybe I was fortunate to be exposed to different foods when I was little, and to me, it was normal. I don't know. But like I said before, there aren't really any foods I liked as a child that I find disgusting now, I was never fond of that stuff to begin with.
brooke29 at 12:47AM on 04/21/09
We didn't eat much chain fast food when I was a kid in NOLA. There were a lot of neighborhood places where we would get burgers and po-boys and stuff. Every once in a while went to Burger King and it was okay.
However, as I got older and moved out, I ate more fast food. I definitely think that McDonald's is way nastier than it used to be. Burger King is terrible. The only fast food place that's still edible is Popeye's and even it is but a shadow of its original self (the chicken was so spicy it hurt to eat it. No more.)
Anyway, frozen pizza is the food that I thought was the Best Thing Ever when I was a kid. I still eat it occasionally but it's not nearly the religious experience it was when I was 10.
RegrettableFoodie at 2:04PM on 04/22/09
Sadly, all the fast food I loved when I was a kid has changed. Popeye's isn't spicy anymore and they don't even call the dirty rice dirty rice. The BK broiler isn't what it used to be. Hardee's might still have the Most Incredible Fried Chicken Sandwich in the world, but now I don't live anywhere near a Hardee's. I used to snarf those things up after ballet. Highlight of my week in the third grade.
Sigh.
jm chen at 2:53PM on 04/22/09
The last time I had KFC was at a family reunion. Some people brought KFC, others (like my grandma) brought homemade. My grandma's chicken was, yes, significantly worse than KFC. My brother had looked forward to having KFC that Sunday, but she had other plans. He quietly took a piece of KFC, and slinked away. She, however, spotting the piece of chicken she has reserved for him still sitting on the serving plate, seized it, and began chasing him through the park with the piece of chicken. He fled and hid behind a tree. I think I was about 10 at the time. Can't stand the stuff now.
The McRib was one of those things that when I was a kid, I liked them. Either they've changed it, or it was just always bad and I didn't realize it. maybe both.
beth1 at 5:39PM on 04/22/09
@chiff, I thought I was the only one who scooped out Italian bread innards and squished it into a marble! Except not only did I do that as a kid, but I still do that now. The difference is now I love the innards AND the crust.
cycorider at 5:48PM on 04/22/09
1 - its a combo of both i am sure. younger kids have a much more unrefined palette, they taste primarily salt sugar and fat, aha ... why kfc was probably so amazing. but i am sure quality of the food has gone down too
2 - i looooved cheetos and those generic grocery store pastries .. i wouldnt touch that stuff anymore.
