How much pig for this party?

For my brother-in-law's 40th birthday, I'm planning on getting a whole roast suckling pig, cooked Filipino style (aka lechon).

However, I don't know the average size (pounds) of a suckling pig, or roughly how many it will feed. I think there will be about 40 people at the party, maybe a few more or less.

There will also be sides and desserts and of course drinks...

Enough food? Way too much?

the co. that you buy it from will be able to tell you. have fun. i partake in quite a few pig roasts during the summer and they are always fun.

there's not a whole lot of meat on a suckling.... but as dearrie said, ask the butcher .... i used one for a party once and was surprised how little meat was actually on it. i think the rule of thumb is a lb. per person if there are bones it it.

I promise you the restaurant will be able to advise the size of pig you need. The last time I attended a pig roast, I wound up carving the pig...LOL. (Grab the crispiest parts!)

What other sides are you serving??? We want details!

Aske the butcher you are getting it from , they will be able to tell you what and how much you need.

I agree, the person selling will definitely know.

I recall once we had someone come in to roast a pig for a big birthday party. When asked how long it took, the man replied..."Well, it depends, if it's just be doing the cooking, it takes as long as one 12 pack of beer takes to drink. If I'm working with a partner, it takes as long as a 24".

It was a great party, and fantastically prepared pig. Mmm...cracklins! have a great time!

I've cooked a 25lb-er for 10 alcohol fuel college students. More than enough. Under normal conditions, 25lbs would have probably fed 15-20. I'd shoot for a 35-40lb pig, which seems to be consistent with the 1lb/person rule of thumb that pooch recommended.
