Eaten at CitiField yet?

I'm a big John Stewart fan but couldn't agree less with last week's rant that ballgame fare should be limited to soggy dogs and warm beer (well, he didn't say soggy and warm, but let's be real). He made fun of foodie fans who might say, "The game sucked but the lobster newburg was magnificent." I had my first visit yesterday and I say unabashedly, the game sucked but the clam & corn chowder and blackened shrimp po boy were fantastic, and the carnitas tacos were pretty damn good too. Anyone else?

8 Comments:

the tacos were alright, shake shack was great! all my friends loved the burgers. it was a great experience, and lots of options

Most of the food I've had ranged from pretty good to excellent. I've only been to two games and this is what I've consumed and enjoyed.
Excellent:
box frites
Blue Smoke wings
garlic fries
fish sandwich
chicken fingers

Pretty good:
nachos

Only disappointing thing was the watery hot chocolate.

Alright, for as a baseball fanatic and amateur cook/foodie the culinary smorgasbord at Citi Field is soothing. Please keep in mind, my reference to smoothing is in comparison to the past culinary experience at Shea Stadium which offered burnt Premio Sausage sandwiches and water logged hot dogs. At Citi Field you will find these same items in addition to a wealth of new culinary delights. I had the privileged to attend two games and here is what I have tasted:

Fried Fish sandwich - Catch of the Day (B)
Shackago Dog - Shake Shack (B)
Fries (chipotle ketchup & smokey bacon sauce)- Box Frites (B)
Chicken Mole Pipian - El Verano Taqueria (B+)
Corn on the Cob - El Verano Taqueria (A)
Cannoli - Mama's of Corona's (C)

Surprisingly, the best item I had to date is the Corn on the Cob from El Verano Taqueria. The corn was perfectly cooked and coated with a combination of mayo, cojita cheese and cayenne. The best sweet and spicy item in the park! Though it is quite pricey ($3.50) for only half of a medium cob.

More to come............

hey, they serve excellent bottles of cold budweiser!

sorry, i kind of agree with john on this one. it seems like modern ballparks are going further and further to offer distractions from what's happening on the field. food is actually pretty low on my annoyance list, though. my top priority is figuring out a way to sabotage the pa system (i can ignore the food lines but i can't ignore the nonstop chatter/contests/ads).

If the Mets keep playing like they are you may need distractions from the game to reduce the agita not only from some of the food items but the game as well. I also forgot to add:

1.) avoid the shack anytime during the game due to the lines (you are bound to miss at least two innings)
2.) the beers are wide and diverse at the "beer garden" in the Taste of Citi Field area and it will cost you ($7.50 / bottle) Leffe, Stella and a variety of microbrews
3.) go early (two hours before the game) when the gates open.....and most importantly watch the game!

My GF and I went to the soft opening for the Citi restaurants 2 weekends ago, check it out on our blog. Tons of pics :]

Here's what you should eat at Citi Field:

- Shake Shack is excellent

- Everything at Blue Smoke is great

- All the tacos are good, the best bet is the triple combo.
>>the steak has a nice grilled flavor
>>the pumpkin sauce on the chicken plays on sweet and spicy
>>the pork was the spiciest on its own and probably the best.
>>None of the salsas really went particularly well with their meats (Fresh tomato for chicken, smoked tomatillo for steak, the orange one for pork) or when I mixed and matched.

- Nacos Grande only on the Upper Deck (Promenade) level, go with the shredded chicken

- I've heard nothing but good things about the Shrimp Po Boy from Catch of the Day but haven't tried it myself

- Mama's Heroes, all of them are delicious and can be found in the not very centrally located World Market

- The brick oven baked Original Cascarino's of College Point Pizza is very tasty, especially the Grandma pizza, but very overpriced so don't be shocked

You can't go wrong with anything - including the iced tea and lemonade - at Catch of the Day
