difference between gnocchi and polenta

What exactly is the difference between gnoochi and polenta? My mother-in-law makes what she calls "gnocchi" and it is cornmeal based, spread out on a pan, and baked in the oven to make little cakes, of sorts. I thought this would be polenta and gnocchi is a dumpling of sorts as pasta or in soups.

Is she wrong?
