Creme Brulee Torch recommendations??
Any recommendations for a creme brulee torch? I'm not using it to make creme brulee but a cheese broccoli soup.
What brand do you like the best & where did you get it?
thanks!

i have a butane torch from the hardware store. same one that i've used in all the restaurants i've ever worked in, cheap, indestructable and the flame is fully adjustable. those dinky little things that they sell at the fancy cooking stores don't work at all and are waaaay expensive.

Agreed. I have the same little hand held one dmarina mentioned. Works like a charm. I even used it to roast leftover Peeps the other night.

OMG! Why have I not thought about roasting peeps before!

I got mine from Bed Bath & Beyond, and it works well! I probably overpaid for what it is though...

Thanks for all the suggestion's...never would've thought of the hardware store or Autozone.
Went to BB&B today and saw they had a cheapie one for about $20. Glad I didn't buy it yet. It looked like it would fall apart after a few uses.
Arm1970 -- I love your suggestion, I think I'll buy one just to roast some peeps. Too bad I don't have any peeps left, guess I'll have to wait til next year!

I agree with all the hardware store torch people..........don't waste the money on those little kitchen torches. The other thing to remember is it is a good investment for little money that you can use interchangebly for a broiler........so it's quick work for Gratins, French onion soup cheese melting, & meringues, without heating the whole kitchen!

I use the tried and true BurnzOmatic torch found at any hardware store. It's cheap, easy and can be used for many things.

i second the bernzomatic recommendation. the only caveat is that they might seem kind of unwieldy.

Well..this might not help but I can tell you which one NOT to get. I bought a creme brulee kit at Bed Bath and Beyond once. The torch did lasted about 3 times of making creme brulee. I have to refill it constantly and it's very temperamental.

Try to grab one from Home Depot or Lowe's. The minute someone paints a picture of a mustachioed chubby guy wearing a toque on the can, the price jumps significantly.

I also agree on the hardware-store torch. Easy to refill, never fails. Try a sweet-potato and pecan pie...bake it, and then caramelise the pecans and brown sugar and butter with the torch. Delicious, easy and impressive.

dmarina, when you mentioned using a butane torch from the hardware store did you mean those ones that you use to set charcoal on fire in your grill?? I went to the hardware store today and the clerk showed me two different types, the one (butane) with the long silver handle (that lights the grill) and a propane kit that comes with two propane containers.
On the other hand I didn't see a BurnzOmatic, maybe I'll just go to another store.
thanks for all the advice!
