I bought all this canned ham on sale, but what should I do with it? Any suggestions?

that scares me. for some reason I can have canned tuna and salmon but when it comes to meat it scares me. what do you usually do with it - have you bought it before?

I got it a couple of times before and made it with mayo, salt & pepper. Something from my Navy days. IMO there's nothing scary about it; I just wanted to try something different.

as a breakfast hash - like cornbeef hash but with the ham
cordon blue
savory scones
soup - like a ham & bean

How about split pea soup? Saute some cubed ham with shallots, garlic & carrots, add vino, chix stock and the peas. Serve with a crusty bread & you're golden!

All of these sound great, y'all. Thanks.

My best friends' mom makes this dish with a canned ham for Easter and Mother's Day every year. It could easily be made with fresher ingredients too.
Remove canned ham from can and place in a greased baking dish (large).
Score the top and spread with a sweet mustard. (a few tbsp.) Stick cloves in the score crosses. Around the ham place cubed sweet potatoes (canned or fresh and peeled) and a mix of favorite canned fruits. She uses pineapple, peaches, pears and a handful of maraschino cherries. Sprinkle brown sugar over all and bake for about 90 minutes til heated through and golden on top of the ham.
I am a fan of ham and beans with cornbread. Cube the ham. Saute some onions in butter. Add the ham, fresh thyme, salt, pepper, crushed red pepper and a dash of allspice. Add chicken broth, and then cooked white beans. Simmer and smush up some of the beans as you go to thicken. Serve with hot cornbread.

Make sandwiches, of course. Fry it up when making breakfast or put into an egg dish of some sort, make Hawaii style skewers and grill it. Put into soups, on pizza.

Okay, I'm going to sound really, really stupid, but having never used a canned ham, what exactly is it? Is it like the stuff at the deli they slice? Or is it chopped up, reformed stuff? Or like canned corned beef that's all piecy? Please don't mock me.

It is a cheaper cut and with more water than the sliced deli hams, but the idea is similar, though the cooking process is different. Cheaper cuts of pork steam cooked in the can, after having been processed with salt and often gelatin and other flavor additives.
It comes both shelf-stable and needing refrigeration (which is the type my friends mom uses in the above recipe) though both are cooked and can be eaten right out of the can.
Not like corned beef, very solid and sliceable and not at all piecey like that or Spam or soft like deviled ham.
I can only eat it chopped small in things, and hot, as I don't prefer the texture so much, but my friends' family eats it like a regular ham in every which way.

How much does a Canned Ham cost? I got a great ham for Easter at my local market for $7.00 Bone and all not canned. I can't imagine buying a canned ham.

@WsLunch-wow, I thought that I got a great deal on a ham for Easter, I paid $10 for a 91/2 pound bone in, and it fed 7 people with leftovers to make sandwichs and a split pea with ham soup, I still have a lot left over. But yes I have had the canned ham and I do like the aspic for some reason.

Jamon con PiƱa!!! Ham with Pineapple - This used to be our staple lunch for Easter and Xmas... before I became a vegetarian.
You stud the ham with cloves, and cook it in the oven with pineapple rounds (pineapple can be fresh or from another can), the juice/syrup of the pineapple and brown sugar. The pineapple juice and brown sugar will create a syrup that you serve with the cooked ham. Serve the carmelized pineapple rounds on top of the ham slices. you can add some marachino cherries to the mix if you'd like.
I used to make this in individual form with smoked pork chops too.
The best accompaniment for this - yellow rice with corn (arroz guisado con maiz) and potato salad with lots of apples.
Sorry - I do not have a recipe, but hope you enjoy it if you make it...

If this is the 'loose' ham in a can, not a whole canned ham, I think the most popular way of using it is to make deviled ham, with dijon mustard, a bit of mayo, and paprika. I can't believe you add extra salt to canned ham, though!
I have also seen what I think is canned ham made into a 'salad' with mayo and dijon as a topping for crackers, garnished with pickle, olives, or cubes of cheese.
I am veg, but my mother used to buy cans of chicken, turkey, and ham to feed my dog when taking care of my pooch when I was away at work, as she did not believe in dog food.

Ham salad.

Wow. Canned ham. I haven't had that in a while. I used to love the gelatin stuff.
Last one I bought, I sliced like deli ham, and to be honest, it's a lot like deli ham. Which is better or worse depends on the deli and the can. I seem to remember that were certain brands of canned hams that were considered premium products -- better than the regular bone-in ham. Whether that was true or just marketing hype, I don't know.
Right now, I'm thinking that a ham and egg breakfast burrito would be quite tasty.
dbcurrie at 10:53PM on 04/18/09
Clarification - these are cans of tinned ham, similar to cans of tuna. It's not one of those larger canned hams with the pop top. Just cans of ham that can be flaked with a fork, just like tuna.
So far:
Omelet
Casserole
Ham Salad
These sound like the best ways to go. But if I did a ham salad, would boiled eggs and onions be okay?
BITTER at 3:30PM on 04/19/09
@dbcurrie - a burrito sounds like a great idea. I may slip over to the grocery store tonight or tomorrow to get my tortillas and eggs.
BITTER at 7:03PM on 04/19/09
@BITTER - I made ham, potato and egg salad last week (with red onions, pickles and dill), and it was really good - the potatoes and the eggs cut the saltiness of the ham. I used regular ham, but I don't see why you wouldn't be able to use hard-boiled eggs and onions in your ham salad, if you so desire.
brooke29 at 7:42PM on 04/19/09
For breakfast, I made the burrito that dbcurrie suggested, with the ham sauteed with onions, 'shrooms, scrambled eggs and Swiss cheese.
@brooke29 - I made a ham salad with egg, relish, mayo and horseradish for lunch.
I'm going to buy more, as my days of buying expensive cuts of meat are over for the moment, at least until I find another job.
